The Radeon RX 6600 is best understood as a power-efficient card for rasterized 1080p gaming—not as a strong ray-tracing or high-resolution option. HotHardware’s October 2021 benchmark page shows it trading places with older and competing cards depending on the workload: it was competitive in several synthetic graphics tests, but lagged in VRMark and ray-tracing benchmarks. These are historical results from one PowerColor RX 6600 Fighter sample, not a measure of 2026 game performance.

What this page tests

This is the benchmark section of HotHardware’s four-part Radeon RX 6600 review, published October 13, 2021—not the complete review or a new test. It covers Unigine Superposition at 1080p Extreme and VR Future, UL VRMark Blue Room, 3DMark Time Spy (DirectX 12), Fire Strike Ultra, Port Royal, and the 3DMark DirectX Raytracing Feature Test. The tests help show how workloads stress different parts of a GPU, but synthetic scores do not predict a fixed frame rate or performance ranking in modern games.

The findings below describe that review’s results. Drivers, games, benchmark versions, operating systems, and system configurations have changed since 2021, so use the results to understand the RX 6600’s strengths and limits—not as a current head-to-head buying test.

The Ryzen 9 5950X and X570 platform were high-end for the period and helped keep CPU limits from obscuring graphics results. That makes the setup useful for comparing cards, but not representative of every budget gaming PC. A slower CPU, single-channel RAM, PCIe 3.0 platform, or background applications can change results, especially at 1080p and in high-frame-rate games.

Why the RX 6600’s results vary

The RX 6600 is built around AMD’s Navi 23 GPU and RDNA 2 architecture. It has 28 compute units, 1,792 stream processors, 32 ray accelerators, 8GB of GDDR6, a 128-bit memory interface, and 32MB of Infinity Cache. Its typical board power is 132W, and it connects over an electrical PCIe x8 interface. It supports hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing (DXR).

Those specifications balance clock speed and efficiency against a narrower memory subsystem than some older cards. The Infinity Cache can reduce trips to memory in workloads that suit it, but cannot erase the 128-bit bus’s limits in every situation. That helps explain why the RX 6600 can look strong in one benchmark and lose ground in another. The full review overview provides the broader product context.

Unigine Superposition: competitive raster results

In HotHardware’s 1080p Extreme run, the RX 6600 finished just behind the GeForce RTX 3060 and about 10% ahead of the Radeon RX 5600 XT. In the VR Future run, it was again about 10% ahead of the RX 5600 XT, while the RTX 3060 opened a larger lead.

This points to competitive conventional rendering in these particular workloads, not a guaranteed 10% gaming advantage over the RX 5600 XT. Superposition has its own mix of rendering demands; individual games, resolutions, settings, and drivers can produce a different ordering.

VRMark Blue Room: less headroom in a demanding VR test

The RX 6600 finished behind every other card in the review’s VRMark Blue Room comparison. HotHardware linked the result chiefly to its lower peak memory bandwidth, despite the RX 6600’s higher clocks, fill rate, and compute performance relative to the RX 5600 XT.

One synthetic result does not mean the RX 6600 cannot run virtual-reality software. It does indicate less headroom for demanding headset resolutions, high refresh rates, supersampling, and newer, visually heavy VR games. For a real VR purchase, check performance in the specific titles and headset you intend to use rather than relying on a single benchmark score.

3DMark Time Spy: close to faster competitors in this test

In the DirectX 12 Time Spy test, the RX 6600 traded blows with the GeForce RTX 2060 Super and nearly caught the RTX 3060. It also finished ahead of the RX 5600 XT, although by only a few percentage points in this test.

That result shows RDNA 2 competing well in this particular DX12 workload. It does not establish that the RX 6600 is categorically as fast as an RTX 3060, nor that it will beat the RX 5600 XT in every game. Treat the score as one data point, not a universal ranking.

Fire Strike Ultra: a bandwidth-sensitive exception

Fire Strike Ultra reversed the RX 6600’s advantage over the older RX 5600 XT: the 5600 XT held a slight edge, which HotHardware attributed to its wider memory bus and greater memory bandwidth. The RX 6600 nevertheless beat the RTX 2060 Super and RTX 3060 in this test.

This is a useful reminder that a newer architecture does not automatically win every workload. The RX 6600 is more efficient and supports newer features, but a workload that leans heavily on memory bandwidth can favor the older card. Neither this result nor the Time Spy result should be generalized beyond its specific test.

Ray tracing: support is not the same as speed

In Port Royal, the RX 6600 placed last among the tested DXR-capable cards and was about 17% behind the RX 6600 XT. In the DirectX Raytracing Feature Test, it was about 16% behind the RX 6600 XT and well behind the tested GeForce cards.

There are three separate questions to keep straight:

ASRock Radeon RX 7600 Challenger Pro 8GB OC, AMD RDNA 3, 8GB GDDR6, PCIe 4.0, Triple Fans, 0dB Silent, 2695MHz Boost, Triple Fan Graphics Card
  • System Compatibility Note: 2.5‑slot card measuring 303 mm (L) x 131 mm (W) x 45 mm (H); requires a single 8‑pin power connector and a recommended 550W power supply. Please verify chassis clearance and power supply capacity before purchase.
  • Dedicated Support: Please contact us directly through Amazon for any product questions or assistance you may require.
  • AMD RDNA 3 Architecture with AI & Ray Tracing Acceleration: Powered by 32 RDNA 3 Compute Units featuring 3rd Gen Ray Tracing Accelerators and 2nd Gen AI Accelerators, delivering lifelike lighting, shadows, and superior machine learning performance for enhanced gaming and content creation.
  • Powerful 1080p & 1440p Gaming Engine: Features a max boost clock of up to 2695 MHz, a game clock of 2280 MHz, and 2048 stream processors, ensuring outstanding frame rates in the latest titles.
  • 8GB High‑Speed GDDR6 Memory: Equipped with 8GB of GDDR6 memory on a 128‑bit interface running at 18 Gbps, delivering up to 288 GB/s bandwidth for high‑resolution textures and demanding game workloads.
  • Does it support ray tracing? Yes. The RX 6600 has ray accelerators and hardware DXR support.
  • Does that make it fast at ray tracing? No. The review’s results show a substantial performance weakness relative to the tested alternatives.
  • Can settings make it usable? In some games, lowering other settings or using an upscaling mode such as FSR may help maintain playable performance. The outcome depends on the game and chosen settings; these benchmarks do not prove that ray tracing is unusable in every title.

The sensible conclusion is that the RX 6600 is much better suited to rasterized graphics than to demanding ray-traced workloads.

What these results mean for a 1080p gaming PC

  • 1080p rasterized games: This is the card’s clearest fit. Medium-to-high or high settings are a reasonable target, with results varying by game and CPU.
  • Esports and lighter games: The card can suit high-refresh play, but at 1080p the CPU may become the limiting factor, particularly for minimum frame rates.
  • New AAA games, ultra settings, or 1440p: Expect less room to spare. The RX 6600 can run selected games at higher settings or resolutions, but this is not the strongest basis for a long-term 1440p upgrade plan.
  • Ray tracing or demanding VR: The benchmark page shows less headroom here than in ordinary raster workloads. Choose a stronger alternative if these are priorities.

Its 8GB framebuffer is useful compared with cards carrying less memory, but capacity and bandwidth are different constraints: a game can fit in 8GB and still be limited by the RX 6600’s memory subsystem. The 8GB also does not guarantee that future games will run comfortably at ultra texture settings.

PCIe 3.0 systems and partner-card differences

The RX 6600’s interface is PCIe x8. PCIe 4.0 platforms provide the expected bandwidth for that link; on a PCIe 3.0 system, the narrower link may affect performance in some games or situations. The effect is not a fixed penalty that applies equally everywhere. If you are upgrading an older PC, consider testing the card in your actual system and checking results for the games you play.

HotHardware tested the PowerColor Fighter, but RX 6600 models from other board partners can differ in cooler size, fan behavior, noise, clock speeds, power limits, and warranty terms. Do not assume that the tested card’s cooling or acoustics describe every RX 6600.

Buying one in 2026: make the price do the work

The 2021 benchmark page cannot establish a current street price, current game performance, or which GPU is the best value in 2026. The RX 6600 makes sense only if the actual price is clearly below alternatives that offer more performance or stronger ray tracing. Compare it with current entry-level cards and any used options available locally; where prices overlap, historical competitors such as the RTX 3060, RTX 2060 Super, RX 5600 XT, RX 6600 XT, and RX 6650 XT may also be relevant. Their relative value depends on condition, price, warranty, and your workload—not just the 2021 benchmark order.

Favor the RX 6600 if you mainly play rasterized 1080p games, value modest power consumption, and find a suitably cheap, tested card. Prefer another GPU if ray tracing, 1440p headroom, demanding VR, creator applications, or a longer high-quality-texture upgrade path matters more. AMD’s RX 6600 driver support page is the official place to check downloads; the old product page redirects to AMD’s broader Radeon desktop graphics page, so do not treat it as a current direct-buy listing.

If you are considering a used card, ask for a return period and test it before completing the purchase. Confirm that the GPU is recognized correctly, inspect it with GPU-Z, run a repeatable benchmark, monitor hotspot temperature, and check fan behavior under load. Look for signs of heavy wear, modified firmware, missing accessories, or a warranty that cannot transfer. A low sticker price is less compelling if the seller offers no testing or return protection.

Verdict

HotHardware’s 2021 results show a mixed but coherent picture: the RX 6600 was competitive in several raster-oriented synthetic tests, while a bandwidth-heavy test narrowed or reversed its lead, and VRMark and ray tracing exposed weaker areas. For a 2026 buyer, that supports a conditional verdict rather than a blanket recommendation: it remains a plausible low-power 1080p raster card when substantially discounted, but it is a poor choice at prices near faster, newer GPUs or for buyers who prioritize ray tracing, VR headroom, or 1440p performance. This is an analysis of the original review, not new hands-on testing; current driver and game performance would require fresh benchmarks.
