The first two cards went on sale through board partners on March 6, with launch suggested prices of $599 and $549 USD respectively. RDNA 4 brought new ray-tracing and AI hardware, but the reveal was a launch for the 9070 tier—not an ultra-high-end flagship. The RX 9000 family later grew to include the RX 9060 XT and RX 9070 GRE, so the original presentation and the lineup available by August 2026 are not the same thing.
What AMD announced on February 28, 2025
The presentation was both an architecture announcement and a product launch: AMD detailed RDNA 4, introduced the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, and presented FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4). AMD had previewed RDNA 4 and the RX 9070 family around CES in January; the February presentation supplied the formal product details, launch prices and availability. The two cards became available through board partners on March 6, 2025. AMD’s reveal presentation and launch announcement document the event.
The choice of products was also a statement about AMD’s positioning. Its initial RDNA 4 launch focused on the mainstream and upper-mainstream market rather than introducing a card aimed at the very top of the GPU market. That meant the reveal was not a direct attempt to launch an RX 9090-class rival to Nvidia’s highest-end offerings.
What RDNA 4 changes
RDNA 4 is AMD’s fourth-generation RDNA gaming architecture, not simply a clock-speed refresh of RDNA 3. AMD’s stated areas of change include redesigned compute units, third-generation ray-tracing accelerators, expanded AI acceleration, updated media capabilities and support for ML-powered FSR 4. These changes target different workloads; they do not mean every game or GPU task improves by the same amount. AMD’s RX 9000 quick-reference guide and Radeon product lineup describe the architecture and family.

Ray tracing and AI acceleration
Ray tracing and AI were central to the generational pitch. More capable ray-tracing hardware is intended to improve performance in games that calculate lighting, reflections or shadows with ray tracing; AI accelerators support workloads such as machine-learning image reconstruction. The practical result depends on the game, settings, resolution and software path. RDNA 4 narrows a weakness associated with earlier Radeon generations, but it does not establish a universal win over Nvidia in ray tracing or AI workloads.
Media, display and power
AMD lists DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b support for RX 9000-series cards. The RX 9070 XT reference specification also calls for two 8-pin power connectors and a recommended 750 W power supply. Those are reference-card details, not a guarantee about every partner board: a factory-overclocked model can differ in power draw, connectors, dimensions and cooling. Check the exact board’s specifications before choosing a case or power supply.
RX 9070 XT specifications and fit
The RX 9070 XT is the faster of the two cards in the February 2025 launch. Its 16 GB of GDDR6 and 256-bit memory interface provide the same stated capacity and interface width as the RX 9070, while its larger compute configuration and higher board power place it above that model. AMD positions it for high-refresh 1440p and mainstream 4K gaming; actual results vary by game and settings.

RX 9070 specifications and fit
The RX 9070 launched at a $549 USD suggested price and retains 16 GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit interface, with 64 MB of Infinity Cache. AMD lists 56 compute units and 220 W total board power. Compared with the XT, its lower power target can make it a more balanced 1440p choice or a card for occasional 4K play, especially when the XT’s performance premium is not worth its extra cost. It is not simply an XT with a different name: the compute configuration and power are lower.
AMD’s February 28 announcement is the source for the launch specifications, launch price and March 6 availability: RX 9000 launch announcement. The $549 figure is the original U.S. launch SEP, not a claim about what the card costs in every region or in 2026.
What AMD’s launch performance claims do—and do not—show
AMD’s launch materials compared the RX 9070 XT with the RX 7900 GRE and presented results spanning rasterized games, ray tracing and selected creator workloads. Those are vendor laboratory results, not independent review findings. AMD described test systems using Ryzen processors, 32 GB of DDR5, Windows 11 Pro and pre-release or launch Radeon drivers, with games including Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, Starfield, Forza Horizon 5 and others. See the test conditions in AMD’s announcement.
A performance comparison is meaningful only when its rendering mode is clear. Native raster results, native ray-tracing results, upscaled results and frame-generation results answer different questions. Upscaling changes the rendering resolution; frame generation adds interpolated frames. Do not treat a generated output frame rate as equivalent to the game’s base frame rate, and do not read an AMD chart as an independent verdict. Independent results also depend on the specific board, driver, title and settings; a review of one partner card does not describe every model bearing the same GPU name.

FSR 4: upscaling, frame generation and game support
FSR 4 is the ML-powered upscaling technology associated with the original RDNA 4 reveal. Upscaling renders a game internally below the selected output resolution and reconstructs an image for the display. AMD said more than 30 games would support FSR 4 at launch and that it could be integrated into games with FSR 3.1 support through its FidelityFX framework. That did not make FSR 4 available automatically in every game: support depends on game integration and compatible hardware. The launch details are in AMD’s announcement.
Frame generation is a separate technique that creates additional interpolated frames between rendered ones. It can make motion appear smoother, but it does not raise the game simulation and input response to the same level as the displayed generated-frame count. It is generally more useful when the underlying frame rate is already reasonably high. Visual quality, frame pacing and latency vary by title, so FSR 4 is an option to evaluate—not a universal replacement for native rendering.
AMD’s current technology page discusses later FSR and FSR Redstone developments for RX 9000-series hardware. Those are subsequent software developments, not features to retroactively attribute to the February 2025 reveal. Check AMD’s FSR page and the individual game’s support information for current availability.
How the RX 9000 family expanded after the reveal
The first presentation covered two 9070 cards, not every later product in the family. AMD introduced the RX 9060 XT at Computex in May 2025; the RX 9070 GRE, initially associated with China, later received global availability in 2026. AMD’s Computex announcement and desktop Radeon lineup cover the family; the GRE rollout is described by Tom’s Hardware.

| Model | Position and known configuration | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| RX 9070 XT | Launch model for high-refresh 1440p and mainstream 4K; 16 GB; $599 launch SEP | Best fit when its extra performance over the RX 9070 justifies the price and the system can accommodate its power and board size. |
| RX 9070 | Launch model for 1440p and moderate 4K; 16 GB; $549 launch SEP | Lower power than the XT; compare actual street prices rather than assuming the historical $50 launch-price difference persists. |
| RX 9060 XT | Later RDNA 4 card with 32 compute units; available with 8 GB or 16 GB GDDR6 | The 16 GB version is the more prudent fit for demanding textures, 1440p and longer ownership; the 8 GB version prioritizes a lower entry price. |
| RX 9070 GRE | Later global-market model positioned between RX 9060 XT and RX 9070; 12 GB configuration | Consider it for raster-focused 1440p only if priced clearly below the RX 9070; independent coverage reports weaker ray-tracing performance relative to its raster performance. |
AMD’s RX 9060 XT announcement establishes the 32 compute units and up-to-16-GB configuration: Computex 2025 announcement. For the GRE, see the Tom’s Hardware review; its global launch price was reported as $549, with later price coverage noting examples around $499. Those price examples are time-sensitive, not guaranteed prices: Tom’s Hardware price update and PC Gamer’s GPU price watch reported deal observations near August 16, 2026, including examples around $499 for GRE, $469.99 for RX 9060 XT 16 GB and $369.99 for RX 9060 XT 8 GB. These are observed deals, not official MSRPs or guaranteed nationwide prices.

There is no single generational or brand-wide winner. The right comparison depends on the exact card, game, resolution, settings, upscaler, frame-generation mode and current price. RX 9000’s architectural improvements matter most to buyers who want newer ray-tracing and AI hardware alongside AMD’s raster performance. A discounted RX 7000 card may still make sense if its performance and memory suit the buyer and its price is sufficiently lower; it does not gain RDNA 4’s ray-tracing hardware or RX 9000-targeted FSR 4 support.
- Rasterized 1440p: Compare independent results in the games you play, at matched settings and native resolution, then compare today’s prices.
- 4K raster: Consider performance as well as memory capacity and the quality settings you intend to use; 16 GB alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate.
- Ray tracing or path tracing: Compare the same RT settings and rendering mode. RDNA 4 improves Radeon’s position, while Nvidia may be preferable when RT performance and its software ecosystem are priorities.
- Upscaling and frame generation: Check which feature each specific game supports and compare image quality, base frame rate and latency separately. AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS are not automatically available in every title.
- Creator or AI applications: Check the application’s supported hardware and software path before buying. CUDA or Nvidia-specific compatibility can matter more than gaming raster results.
AMD’s RX 7000-versus-RX 9000 infographic provides its own generational comparison: AMD comparison infographic. Treat manufacturer comparisons as vendor claims and keep their test conditions distinct from independent reviews.
Which RX 9000 card makes sense for your build?
Choose RX 9070 XT for high-refresh 1440p or mainstream 4K
It is the launch-family choice when you want the faster 9070-tier card and value 16 GB of memory. It is most compelling when its actual price is near its February 2025 $599 SEP, rather than at a large premium. Plan around AMD’s reference recommendation of a 750 W PSU, but verify the connector, dimensions and power requirements of the specific partner board.

Choose RX 9070 for lower power and 16 GB
The RX 9070 is a sensible 1440p or occasional-4K option when it costs enough less than the XT to justify the performance difference. Its 220 W board-power specification is substantially below the XT’s 304 W reference figure. That can help with a lower-power or quieter build, though cooler noise and size remain board-specific.
Choose RX 9060 XT 16 GB for a lower-cost 1440p build
This is the more durable 9060 XT configuration for demanding games, high textures and longer ownership. It is not a substitute for the 9070-tier cards if the goal is maximum performance or 4K gaming. If the 8 GB and 16 GB models are close in price, the 16 GB card offers more memory headroom.
Choose RX 9060 XT 8 GB only when budget takes priority
It suits a price-led 1080p or lighter 1440p build, but is a less comfortable choice for high textures, demanding ray tracing, modded games or a plan to keep the card for years. VRAM is not the only determinant of performance, but an 8 GB limit can constrain settings in memory-intensive games.
Consider RX 9070 GRE only at a meaningful discount
The GRE’s value depends on its real price relative to RX 9070, not just its position in the lineup. At roughly $499, reported in later deal coverage, it may suit raster-focused 1440p play. At its reported $549 global launch price, the regular RX 9070 can be the more attractive option if prices are close, particularly for buyers who want 16 GB or care about ray tracing.
Consider Nvidia when its features match your priorities
A comparable RTX 50-series card may be the better fit if your games emphasize ray tracing, or if DLSS, Nvidia frame-generation features, CUDA or creator-app compatibility matter to you. Compare current effective prices and matched independent results rather than relying on launch MSRP or a brand slogan.
Quick Recap
What to verify before buying
- Confirm the exact memory capacity: RX 9060 XT is sold in 8 GB and 16 GB versions, and the RX 9070 GRE has a 12 GB configuration.
- Check the board partner’s card length, slot thickness, connectors, power recommendation, cooler and warranty; specifications can differ within a GPU model family.
- Check whether a listed price is a temporary deal, includes a rebate, reflects a marketplace seller, or applies to the capacity you intend to buy. Regional taxes, stock and retailer terms change the final cost.
- Check the games you play for FSR 4 support rather than assuming it is available across all RX 9000 games.
- For performance claims, distinguish native rendering from upscaling and frame generation, and look for the game, resolution, settings and driver used in the comparison.
