AMD’s Radeon RX 7800M is a real notebook GPU, but it does not have “the same specifications” as the PS5 Pro. The comparison rests mainly on a shared 60-compute-unit count reported for Sony’s console; it does not establish identical hardware or equivalent gaming performance.
What AMD announced
AMD lists the Radeon RX 7800M as a notebook graphics processor, with a launch date of September 2024. Its product page confirms the GPU’s existence and specifications; it does not establish that laptops using it are broadly available or that AMD sells it as a conventional desktop graphics card. Radeon RX 7800M specifications
These are AMD’s published figures. Values described as “up to” are product capabilities, not a guarantee that every laptop or external-GPU setup will reach them.
| Specification | Radeon RX 7800M |
|---|---|
| Architecture | RDNA 3 |
| Board type | Notebook |
| Compute units | 60 |
| Stream processors | 3,840 |
| Ray accelerators | 60 |

| Memory speed | Up to 18Gbps |
| Memory bandwidth | Up to 432GB/s |
| Infinity Cache | 48MB |
| GPU power | Up to 180W |
| Peak FP32 performance | 39 TFLOPs |
Actual clock behavior and sustained performance depend on a system’s power limit, cooling, firmware and memory configuration. AMD’s listed 39 TFLOPs is a peak FP32 figure, not a reliable conversion to console performance.

Why it is being compared with the PS5 Pro
The RX 7800M has 60 compute units. That matches the count commonly reported for the PS5 Pro’s graphics processor, but Sony’s consumer specifications do not provide a complete PC-style GPU table. The 60-CU comparison is therefore best stated as a match to a reported count—not proof that the chips share all specifications. Sony’s PS5 Pro overview focuses on features and supported experiences rather than a full component specification sheet.
Having the same number of compute units does not make two GPUs interchangeable. Clocks, power, cache, memory, ray-tracing hardware, software, and platform design all affect results. Even AMD’s RX 7800 XT desktop card also has 60 compute units, yet it is a different product with a different power and memory configuration.

Custom console features complicate the comparison
The PS5 Pro is a custom console design built around fixed hardware and a tightly integrated game platform. Sony highlights advanced ray tracing, higher or more consistent frame rates in supported games, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-enhanced resolution technology. Sony’s technical seminar also discusses its work with AMD on machine-learning-based graphics technology. Sony’s PS5 Pro technical seminar
AMD specifies 60 ray accelerators for the RX 7800M, but that number alone does not establish parity with Sony’s custom ray-tracing implementation. Nor is PSSR simply another name for PC upscaling: the RX 7800M can use AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution in games that support it, while PSSR is Sony’s separate technology for compatible PS5 Pro titles. What performance evidence can—and cannot—show
Early coverage included preliminary or vendor-linked claims that the RX 7800M could beat an RTX 4070 Laptop GPU in selected tests and approach PS5 Pro performance in some comparisons. Those are test-specific claims, not a settled ranking. Tom’s Hardware’s September 2024 archive and TweakTown’s September 2024 coverage provide launch-period context.
A fair PS5 Pro comparison would need matched games, image quality, resolution, frame-rate targets and upscaling settings. Console versions use developer-selected modes; PC games expose different graphics settings and may rely on different upscaling paths. External-GPU results add more variables, including the OCuLink or USB4 connection, host CPU, enclosure cooling and display routing. A benchmark from one setup cannot establish universal PS5 Pro equivalence.

RX 7800M is not RX 7800 XT
The similar names can cause confusion. AMD classifies the RX 7800M as a notebook GPU. Its published configuration is 12GB of memory and up to 180W of GPU power. AMD’s reference comparison material lists the desktop RX 7800 XT at 16GB and 263W total board power. Those are distinct products, not interchangeable desktop and mobile versions with identical capabilities. AMD’s RX 7800 XT comparison material

The RX 7800M is most naturally found in a laptop. It may also appear in compact external-GPU products or specialist handheld and mini-PC ecosystems; an RX 7800M XT eGPU announcement is one example of that product context. VideoCardz’s report on the handheld and eGPU announcement

AMD’s product listing is not a retailer listing, and it does not confirm current stock or availability in any particular region. For a laptop, check the exact model’s GPU power configuration and cooling. For an eGPU, account for the enclosure and connection: its performance can be constrained by bandwidth, power delivery, host limitations and how the display is connected.
Quick Recap
How to choose between an RX 7800M system and a PS5 Pro
- Choose by games and platform first. PS5 Pro performance depends on each game’s support and selected mode; a Windows laptop offers access to the PC game library and adjustable settings.
- Compare complete system costs. An RX 7800M is part of a laptop or eGPU setup, not a standalone desktop-card purchase. Include the host system and, for an eGPU, its enclosure and connection.
- Check the actual target. Resolution, frame rate, ray tracing and upscaling all change the workload. A shared CU count or peak TFLOPs figure cannot settle those comparisons.
- For a laptop, check sustained power and cooling. The advertised “up to 180W” does not mean every laptop configures the GPU at that level.
