The Anbernic RG353M is still appealing if you want a compact, metal-bodied 4:3 handheld for classic systems through PlayStation 1, with useful but imperfect N64, Dreamcast, Saturn and PSP emulation. Its CNC aluminum shell, dual-boot Android/Linux setup and physical controls give it a distinctive feel. But the RK3566 is not a dependable route to demanding PSP games, GameCube or PS2, and the RG405M can be a stronger buy when its price is close.
What the RG353M is—and what it is for
The RG353M is a horizontal retro-emulation handheld in Anbernic’s RG353 family. Its defining choice is a small 3.5-inch, 640 × 480 touchscreen in a CNC-machined aluminum-alloy body. The 4:3 display suits older consoles; Android 11 and Linux provide two ways to run games and organize a library.
Inside are a quad-core Rockchip RK3566 processor, specified at up to 1.8 GHz, and 2 GB of LPDDR4 RAM. Anbernic lists Hall-effect analog sticks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI output, stereo speakers and a 3.5-mm headphone jack. Its official specifications are at Anbernic’s RG353M product page.
It is best understood as a premium-feeling compact machine for 8-bit and 16-bit systems, handheld classics, arcade games and PS1—not as a small modern gaming tablet. The processor is a real step up from the RG351 generation, but the screen size, 4:3 shape and limited performance all matter when choosing games.

Build, screen and controls
Metal body and portability
The aluminum enclosure feels more rigid and substantial than a typical plastic budget handheld. That is a tactile benefit, not proof of greater long-term reliability. The trade-off is weight: official listings differ slightly, giving a range of about 230–232 g. The listed dimensions are approximately 145 × 70.5 × 15.9 mm. It is compact, but the small grip may feel cramped to people with larger hands during long sessions.
The analog sticks are specified as Hall-effect designs. That is a feature, not a guarantee against every possible mechanical or control failure. Anbernic’s customer-review page includes isolated complaints such as a sticking R1 button; such reviews can flag possible quality-control issues, but they are not controlled reliability testing. A 4:3 screen for older games
The 640 × 480 IPS screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio, a natural fit for NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, PS1 and many arcade games. The touchscreen is useful in Android and in software that benefits from touch input, but it is not essential to the classic controller experience.
That same shape is less suitable for widescreen PSP games: they may be letterboxed, stretched or shown at a smaller size. Nintendo DS can also benefit from more screen area, particularly when a game depends heavily on seeing both screens. If PSP or DS is your main target, a larger or widescreen handheld is a more comfortable choice.
Controls and ergonomics
The horizontal layout gives the D-pad and face buttons a familiar arrangement for platformers and fighting games. Two analog sticks extend the device’s usefulness for N64, Dreamcast and some PSP titles, although the compact body leaves less room for relaxed grips than a larger controller-shaped handheld. Shoulder-button reach and comfort will depend on hand size and grip; there is no basis here for precise button-force or measurement claims.

What systems run well?
There is an important difference between an emulator opening and a game being enjoyable. An independent RG353M performance review describes N64 as broadly playable and Saturn, Dreamcast and PSP as mostly playable. Those are library-level assessments, not promises that every title runs smoothly or without configuration.

N64: capable, not universal
The RG353M is a reasonable N64 handheld for many popular titles, but “N64 support” does not mean every game runs perfectly. Results can change with the emulator core, renderer, resolution and game. Some titles may show graphics or audio issues, uneven frame pacing or slowdowns; a different configuration can help in some cases, but there is no basis for promising universal full-speed performance.

Dreamcast and Saturn: expect some tinkering
Dreamcast is an impressive stretch capability for the RK3566, and many games are playable. More demanding titles may require settings changes or frameskip. Linux and Android offer different emulator choices, so results can differ between them. Saturn is similarly game-dependent. Treat “mostly playable” as a useful broad impression, not a guarantee of console-like consistency.
PSP: the most tempting overstatement
The RG353M can handle some PSP titles, particularly less demanding games, but it is not a dependable PSP replacement. The upper end of the library exceeds what it can deliver consistently, and the 4:3 display makes widescreen games look letterboxed, stretched or small. If PSP is the priority, choose a faster device with a more suitable screen.
Android or Linux?
The dual-OS setup is useful for people who want options, but it adds decisions and setup work. Official specifications list Android 11 and Linux; they do not guarantee that every emulator or Android game will run well. Which system is preferable depends on how you want to use the device.

Neither operating system turns the hardware into a dependable modern Android gaming device. Installing an app is not the same as getting good performance, a suitable screen layout and working controls.

Storage, setup and custom firmware
Anbernic lists 32 GB of internal Android eMMC storage, a 16 GB Linux TF/microSD card and support for an external TF/microSD card up to 512 GB. Retail configurations can be advertised with different card combinations, so check the exact variant rather than assuming the base unit includes a large card. The official listing is at Anbernic’s RG353M store page.
Descriptions such as a card being “compatible with” thousands of games are seller bundle claims, not a guarantee of card quality, organization or licensing. Preloaded-game legality varies by jurisdiction and title. Use game files you are legally entitled to use, and do not treat a bundled ROM count as a reason to buy.
Stock firmware is a sensible starting point. Custom firmware is optional, not a prerequisite. Anbernic’s RG353 firmware download page lists stock Linux and Android resources, including firmware from 2023; its existence does not establish that those files are the newest community-supported choices in 2026. - Use a reputable microSD card and back up the original card before changing firmware.
- Confirm that an image is specifically compatible with the RG353M and the device revision; do not assume images for the RG353V, RG353P or RG353VS are interchangeable.
- Flash the image with a verified imaging utility, then keep the original card untouched until the new installation boots correctly.
- If the device fails to boot, restore the original card or use the relevant recovery guidance rather than trying unrelated family firmware.
- Follow the firmware project’s battery-level and safe-shutdown guidance. ArkOS documentation also describes backing up the accessible
EASYROMSpartition and flashing Android back to internal memory with its353_emmc_flashtool.
A corrupt or unreliable bundled card can cause problems that look like firmware trouble. Keeping a known-good backup makes recovery easier; custom firmware still brings its own maintenance and compatibility trade-offs.

Battery, connectivity and extras
Anbernic specifies a 3,500-mAh battery and rates it at approximately seven hours. That is a manufacturer rating, not a universal real-world runtime: brightness, wireless use, speaker volume, emulator workload, operating system and battery age all affect endurance.
The official specification lists 2.4/5-GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, HDMI output, stereo speakers and a 3.5-mm headphone connection. It also lists wired-controller functionality under Linux. Wi-Fi multiplayer, streaming and HDMI use depend on firmware, application, controller, cable and display compatibility; the presence of a port does not ensure every setup is plug-and-play.
Price and alternatives in 2026
On August 16, 2026, Anbernic’s official listing showed a $125.99 USD sale price against a $153.99 regular price, with the displayed variant marked sold out in the search result. A separate regional Anbernic page showed $117.99 USD against $145.99. These are dated price and availability signals, not a guarantee of what a buyer can order now; confirm the selected variant, region, shipping, taxes and stock on the official RG353M listing before purchasing.
The value question changes if a newer device is priced similarly. Anbernic’s RG405M product page is the key comparison: a $119.99 USD sale price against a $177.99 regular price was shown on that regional page on August 16, 2026. The RG405M has a faster Android platform and a larger 4-inch display, so it offers more headroom for N64, Dreamcast and PSP, as well as some sixth-generation experimentation. That does not make GameCube or PS2 universally reliable, and it is less focused on the RG353M’s compact 4:3 retro presentation.

- Choose the RG353M if the metal body, small size, 4:3 image, Linux option and classic systems matter more than raw performance—and its price is meaningfully below a faster alternative.
- Choose the RG405M if prices overlap and performance headroom or a larger screen matters more than the RG353M’s particular form and dual-OS character.
- Consider a cheaper Linux handheld if your library stops around PS1 and you do not need Android, HDMI, dual sticks or a metal shell.
- Look for a modern widescreen Android handheld if PSP or Android games are central to the purchase.
Who should buy it?
- First-time handheld buyer: Buy only if you are comfortable choosing firmware, organizing storage and occasionally adjusting emulator settings. For a simpler experience, prioritize a device with a more straightforward software setup.
- RG351 or RG350 owner: The RG353M brings a performance step, analog sticks, Android and a metal enclosure. Upgrade if those features matter; do not expect dependable sixth-generation emulation.
- Mostly 16-bit or PS1 player: The screen, controls and size are well matched to this use. A less expensive handheld may be better value if the metal construction and extra features do not matter.
- N64 or Dreamcast player: It is capable of worthwhile play, with per-game and configuration caveats. Choose a faster model if you want fewer compromises.
- PSP-focused player: Skip it as a primary PSP machine; both performance and screen proportions work against that use.
- Tinkerer: The dual-OS design and community firmware give you room to experiment, provided you back up cards and accept the possibility of troubleshooting.
- Plug-and-play buyer: Do not assume Android, bundled storage or custom firmware makes setup effortless. Stock firmware is a reasonable start, but the device still rewards some configuration.
