Start with what your family knows, then trace ancestors through records that connect names, dates, places, and relationships.

To find your ancestors, start with yourself and the relatives you know, then work backward one generation at a time. Collect names, dates, places, and relationships; ask family members for stories and documents; and check each clue against historical records. No single database or method identifies every family line.

What counts as an ancestor?

An ancestor is someone from whom you descend: a parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, or an earlier generation. Finding a name is only the start. To identify the right person, connect that name to dates, places, relationships, and records that fit together.

Genealogy guidance from the U.S. National Archives centers on four details to extract from historical documents: names, dates, places, and relationships. Those details help distinguish people with similar names and show what to investigate next. See the National Archives’ beginner guide to genealogical research.

How to begin researching your ancestors

1. Write down what you already know

Begin with yourself, then record what you know about your parents, grandparents, and other close relatives. For each person, note names and name variations, approximate dates, locations, relationships, and where each detail came from. Ask relatives about moves, religious or community ties, military service, and family documents such as letters, certificates, or photographs.

Family memories are useful leads, but they can be incomplete or mistaken. Library and Archives Canada recommends speaking with elders, neighbors, and community members while checking remembered details against records. Its guide to beginning genealogy research offers advice for getting started.

2. Pick one person and one question

Choose a relative whose identity and approximate dates you already know, then ask a narrow question: Where did this person live in a particular year? When did they marry or immigrate? What was their birthplace? A defined question makes it easier to choose a relevant record and evaluate whether a result is actually about your relative.

Work backward rather than adding people to a tree because their names look familiar. A matching name alone does not establish a relationship. Ancestry’s search guidance also suggests beginning with the oldest known relatives and adding information as records provide clues.

3. Follow one record clue to the next

A record can point to another search. A census entry may reveal a household, location, or birthplace; those details may suggest where to look for a marriage, immigration, naturalization, military, land, or court record. Keep track of the address, event date, relatives, and other identifiers that could narrow the next search.

In the United States, the National Archives identifies census, military, immigration, naturalization, land, and court records as useful starting points. Depending on the person and place, also check church records, newspapers, private papers, local archives, libraries, and historical or genealogical societies. Its genealogy research guide outlines federal record collections and research-room resources; its genealogy FAQ names examples such as passenger arrival lists, citizenship papers, military pension files, and land patents.

4. Keep evidence attached to each detail

For every fact you add, note the source: the document or collection, its date and location if known, and whether you viewed the original image or only an index or transcription. Separate what a record explicitly says from your interpretation. If records disagree, compare their dates, places, and relationships instead of silently choosing the version that best fits your family tree.

An index entry or another person’s online family tree can offer a lead, but it does not by itself establish that you have identified the right person or relationship. Seek records with enough detail to connect the individual to the family and place you are researching.

Which records can help identify an ancestor?

The right source depends on the ancestor’s country, locality, time period, and community. A practical first pass is to use one record for a known event or place, then follow its clues into other record types.

  • Census records: May show a person in a household and provide location or other identifying clues. What each census records varies by country and year.
  • Vital records: Birth, marriage, and death records can supply dates, places, and family relationships, where they exist and are accessible.
  • Immigration and naturalization records: May help trace a move across borders or a citizenship process.
  • Military records: Service records or pension files may add dates, locations, or family details.
  • Land and court records: Can connect a person to a property, community, or legal event.
  • Church and community sources: Congregations, local historical societies, libraries, and archives may hold records not found in large online databases.

Not every ancestor will appear in a digitized collection, and records differ in what they say. If an online search turns up only an index, use its place, date, or reference details to look for the underlying record or contact the relevant repository.

What can you access for free, and when might a database help?

Subscription services can make some records easier to search, and some records may require a membership. But archival and public-library collections are also part of the research path. Before paying, check whether the relevant archive or library offers the collection online, through a library card, or in person. Access varies by collection and location, so verify current terms directly.

When comparing a paid database with a free archive or library route, consider whether it covers the needed place, years, and record type; whether it shows the original image or only an index; and whether its result gives a useful next clue. The National Archives lists Ancestry, FamilySearch, and Fold3 among databases available in its research rooms, but that does not mean every collection is available everywhere or that a particular service is the best choice for every search. Fold3 is relevant when military records are the question, not a universal family-history solution. See the National Archives’ research resources for details.

U.S. federal census access: what is public?

For U.S. federal population census records, the disclosure restriction is 72 years. The National Archives currently provides public census records from 1790 through 1950; the 1950 census was released in 2022. The U.S. Census Bureau says the 1960 census is scheduled for public release in April 2032. These dates concern U.S. federal population census records only; do not assume the same rule applies to other countries or other record types.

Can DNA testing tell you who your ancestors are?

DNA results may provide clues about relatives, but they are not a complete family history and do not replace documentary research. The available vendor learning material mentions DNA as one possible genealogy path, but does not establish comparative accuracy, suitability for a particular lineage, or which test is best. If you explore DNA, treat any match as a lead to investigate and review the provider’s current privacy terms before sharing genetic information.
