Guides report this happens on the eighth home assignment, after seven completed homes and the school renovation. Each wall costs three wood and three clay to craft; in the DLC editor, find it in the Other category.
What you need before you can unlock partition walls
You need Animal Crossing: New Horizons and access to its Happy Home Paradise DLC. Nintendo Support lists both the original game and Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as eligible base games. The DLC is available as a separate purchase or through an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo also notes that some DLC features require game progress: Nintendo’s Happy Home Paradise access instructions.
If you are choosing an access route, a separate DLC purchase remains playable indefinitely. Membership-based access depends on an active membership; if it ends, you cannot visit the DLC archipelago unless you also own the DLC separately. Some content already unlocked through the DLC can still be used on your main island. Check Nintendo’s regional storefront and current membership terms for availability and conditions: Nintendo’s Happy Home Paradise and Version 2.0.0 FAQ.
When Niko gives you the partition-wall DIY
Nintendo Support confirms that some Happy Home Paradise features unlock as you make progress, but its support page does not give the partition-wall milestone. Nintendo Life reports that Niko teaches the DIY after eight vacation-home designs. iMore describes the sequence more specifically: complete seven homes, renovate the school, then receive the recipe from Niko during the eighth assignment. The guides agree on the eighth home-design milestone; the school-renovation detail is specified by iMore.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
For the reported walkthrough, continue designing vacation homes and complete the school renovation before starting the eighth assignment. If you have reached that point but have not received the recipe, finish the active assignment and check in with Niko on the next one; the available guides tie the lesson to that progression rather than to a menu setting.
How to use partition walls in a vacation home
- Open a vacation-home design and enter decorating mode.
- Open the furniture inventory and select the Other category.
- Choose Partition Wall and place it in the room. The wall is two spaces wide, half a space deep, and reaches the ceiling, according to Nintendo Life’s partition-wall guide.
While editing, you can move or remove a partition like other furniture. It takes the room’s wallpaper, cannot support hanging furniture, and is for indoor use only.

How to craft and place partition walls on your island
After learning the recipe, craft each partition wall at a DIY workbench using three wood and three clay. Then select the crafted wall from your inventory and place it inside your home. Nintendo says design options acquired while working for Paradise Planning can become available on your own island as they are unlocked: Nintendo’s Happy Home Paradise announcement.
