In Apex Legends: Upheaval (Season 21), Alter could reach one item in a death box from a distance, create a portal through a surface, and give teammates a route back to a shared regroup point. The season launched May 7, 2024, and ended August 5, 2024; its launch abilities and balance values are historical, not a description of the live game. EA’s season index lists Upheaval as Season 21 and gives those dates (EA Help).
Alter’s abilities in Apex Legends: Upheaval
Alter was introduced in Season 21. Her kit connected remote interaction, movement through terrain, and team regrouping. The details below describe the Upheaval launch notes; ability tuning can change after a launch patch, so they should not be treated as current balance values.
Passive — Gift from the Rift
Alter could remotely interact with a death box and claim one item. She could not take a shield core. The launch patch-note summary does not specify an interaction range.
Tactical — Void Passage
Void Passage created a portal passage through a surface. Alter fired a void blast at a surface, and the angle of the shot determined where the passage exited, allowing routes through ceilings and ledges. Travel through the passage was instantaneous in either direction, and players remained phased briefly after exiting.

Season 21 dates and Solos Takeover
Upheaval ran from May 7 through August 5, 2024, according to EA Help. Its Solos Takeover replaced Duos for six weeks, from May 7 through June 24, 2024. The limited-time mode used 50 players and added several solo-specific mechanics:
- Battle Sense: A HUD indicator showed nearby enemies within 50 meters.
- Second Chance: Players eliminated during the first four rounds received one automatic respawn.
- Out-of-combat healing: Players healed automatically when out of combat.
- EVO conversion: An unused Second Chance converted to EVO at the round cutoff.
These were the mode’s announced rules, not permanent changes to the standard battle royale modes. The dates and mechanics were published by EA/Respawn in the Upheaval patch notes and the season announcement.

Legend balance changes beyond Alter
The Upheaval notes covered changes to Ash, Ballistic, Bloodhound, Catalyst, Caustic, Conduit, Crypto, Fuse, Newcastle, Octane, Wattson, and Wraith, in addition to introducing Alter. Notable launch-patch examples included:
- Ash: Arc Snare became an off-hand cast.

Ranked changes and rewards
For the Season 21 launch, premade Ranked squad members had to be within three rank tiers of one another to proceed to matchmaking; launch scoring was unchanged. The reset and reward rules listed in the notes were:
- Rookie players reset to 1 RP.
- Players above Rookie reset to Bronze IV.
- Split 2 aligned with the .1 patch.
- End-of-season rewards were based on the highest rank tier reached during the season.
These describe Upheaval’s published Ranked rules, not necessarily the rules of a later season.
