Apex Legends packet loss can come from your Wi‑Fi or router, your ISP’s route to an EA data center, a VPN, or the game’s server path. Start by enabling the in-game Performance Display, checking more than one match, and comparing your usual connection with Ethernet. Those tests help identify the likely source before you change settings or buy hardware.
What packet loss looks and feels like
Apex exchanges gameplay data between your platform and the game data center. Packet loss means some of that data fails to complete the round trip. Depending on when and how often it happens, you may see rubber-banding, stuttering, delayed movement or firing, players seeming to teleport, or a disconnect. EA describes these as possible effects, not proof that every instance of lag is packet loss: EA’s Apex connection troubleshooting guide.
Separate the network and performance metrics before troubleshooting:
- Packet loss means some packets do not arrive successfully.
- Latency or ping is the time for data to make a round trip. EA describes under 50 ms as particularly good, under 100 ms as generally playable, and latency above 100 ms as a point where lag may begin; these are broad guidelines, not guarantees for every region or player.
- Jitter is variation in latency over time. A connection can have little or no loss but still feel inconsistent if latency fluctuates.
- FPS is how quickly your device renders frames. Low or uneven FPS can look like stuttering but is not network packet loss.
- Server performance concerns how the game server processes its simulation. EA’s server and netcode explanation treats server performance as distinct from local rendering and describes how high latency or packet loss can leave a local simulation out of sync.
EA’s connection-quality guidance recommends keeping packet loss as close to 0% as possible. There is no universal percentage at which every Apex match becomes unplayable: brief versus persistent loss, its direction, and accompanying latency or jitter all matter. Correlate the display with what you experience rather than treating one momentary reading as a diagnosis.

How to check packet loss in Apex
- Open Settings, select the Gameplay tab, and turn on Performance Display.
- Watch the displayed FPS, latency, and packet loss in the lobby and during an actual match. EA’s current instructions are in its Apex connection guide; interface labels can change.
- Record the data center, readings, approximate time, and whether the symptom appears in the lobby, early match, fights, or only after several games.
- Repeat the observation across several matches and, if practical, with household downloads and uploads paused. A single lobby reading—or a match that happens to be stable—does not establish that the route is consistently healthy.
A normal speed test does not rule out loss on the particular route Apex uses. Likewise, a bad reading in one match does not by itself prove that EA’s servers, your ISP, or your home network is responsible.
Try the least invasive checks first
- Check service information. Look at EA’s server-status information and official PlayApex updates before changing your network. EA recommends checking for server issues when connection trouble affects multiple data centers.
- Compare data centers. At the opening screen, before selecting Continue, choose Data Center in the bottom-left and try the closest suitable option. Prefer stable readings and 0% loss over a nominally lower ping with persistent loss. A distant center can add latency, so do not use repeated jumps between faraway regions as a lasting fix.
- Test Ethernet if available. Play over a wired connection during the same period when the problem normally occurs. If loss stops, investigate Wi‑Fi placement, interference, or congestion. Ethernet is a diagnostic, not a guarantee: a damaged cable, wall jack, switch, or router port can also fail.
- Pause competing traffic. Temporarily stop game downloads and updates, cloud backups, large transfers, streams, and other heavy uploads or downloads. A fast internet plan can still experience delay or loss when a shared link or router queue is congested.
- Restart the network equipment once. Exit Apex, power off the modem or gateway and any separate router, wait briefly, then start the modem/gateway and let it reconnect before starting the router. Re-test under the same conditions. If the fault returns, repeated reboots are not a diagnosis.
- Disable a VPN during normal troubleshooting. EA warns that VPNs can add distance to the route and increase ping or instability. If you use one, compare with it off before drawing conclusions.
EA also recommends a wired connection where possible, reducing competing background activity, and checking router firmware. Follow the router maker’s instructions for updates; an update can address bugs but is not a guaranteed packet-loss cure. See EA’s connection-quality troubleshooting.

Use the results to locate the likely fault
| Test result | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet removes the loss | Wi‑Fi conditions or wireless hardware are more likely than the external Apex route. | Test nearer the router, reduce obstacles and interference, and compare again. |
| Other games, calls, or devices also have trouble | A shared home-network or ISP issue becomes more plausible. | Test a wired device and collect times and readings for the ISP. |
| Only one device is affected | That device’s adapter, cable, port, driver, or local software may be involved. | Compare another device on the same connection and inspect the affected device’s local link. |
| Only one Apex data center shows loss | A particular route or center may be involved; the lowest-ping center is not always the most stable. | Use a nearby stable center and note which one fails. |
| Only Apex is affected | An Apex-specific route or server path is possible, but a clean result in another game does not rule out an ISP route problem to Apex. | Compare data centers and times, then check official service updates. |
| A nearby VPN endpoint changes the result | The VPN may be taking a different route; this is evidence of a routing difference, not proof that a VPN is inherently faster. | Repeat the comparison across several matches and weigh added latency and VPN policy. |
| Every data center appears bad | A regional service issue, ISP route, or home gateway problem is possible. | Check official status, test Ethernet and other services, and document the pattern. |
| Rubber-banding occurs while the display shows 0% loss | Latency spikes, jitter, FPS, or server simulation may better explain the symptom. | Watch latency and FPS during the event and compare another match. |
These patterns are clues, not proof. For example, a match-specific fault may be a server instance or a route that affects only that destination. Do not replace a router just because one match was bad, and do not blame EA solely because a browser or another game works.
Improve the home network when tests point there
Wi‑Fi placement and equipment
If Ethernet is stable but Wi‑Fi is not, test closer to the router and reduce walls or other obstacles between the device and access point. Wireless interference, distance, and other devices sharing Wi‑Fi can make a connection inconsistent even when a speed test reports high throughput. Wi‑Fi can still be playable; the wired comparison simply removes much of this uncertainty.

Before replacing equipment, check the cable, router port, wall jack, and any switch used in the wired path. Check for router firmware updates using the manufacturer’s instructions. A new router is most relevant when the tests point to weak coverage, unstable local hardware, or household congestion—not when Ethernet has the same loss and the problem appears beyond the home network.
QoS and queue management
Some routers offer Quality of Service (QoS), which can prioritize selected traffic. It may help when other household activity is saturating the connection, but incorrect settings can reduce throughput or prioritize the wrong device. A “gaming mode” label does not establish that it will help Apex, and QoS cannot repair loss beyond the router. Queue management designed to limit bufferbloat may be relevant on some routers, but support and setup vary by model.

Use PC diagnostics as supporting evidence
On Windows, these commands can help check general connectivity, but they do not reproduce Apex’s exact gameplay path or traffic:
ipconfig
ping 1.1.1.1 -n 100
tracert 1.1.1.1
A clean ping to a public address does not establish that the route to Apex is clean. A slow or unanswered hop in tracert does not automatically identify a failing router, because network devices may de-prioritize diagnostic traffic. Treat these results as context for a repeatable pattern, not as a definitive verdict or an Apex-specific test.

When a VPN comparison is useful
EA’s ordinary troubleshooting advice is to disable VPNs because a tunnel can add distance, latency, or instability. A controlled comparison can still help investigate a suspected routing difference: test several matches with the VPN off, then with a nearby endpoint, keeping the data center and other conditions as consistent as possible. If the result changes reliably, the VPN may be selecting a different route; it does not prove the VPN is faster in general or that it will remain stable. A VPN can add congestion and latency, and it may be restricted by your network administrator.
Fixes that usually do not diagnose packet loss
- Changing DNS: DNS can affect name resolution or initial connection setup, but it normally does not determine the route of every gameplay packet in an established match. It is not a general packet-loss repair.
- Port forwarding: Do not forward ports as a first-line loss fix. The relevant guidance depends on platform, NAT behavior, router, and current EA instructions; incorrect changes can create configuration or security problems. EA forum support discussions can offer context, but they are not proof that port forwarding fixes a particular player’s loss: packet loss discussion and connection troubleshooting discussion.
- Reinstalling Apex: Reinstalling can repair damaged game files, but it generally will not fix Wi‑Fi interference, ISP congestion, routing, or an unstable server. Treat it as a later software-integrity step if there are signs of a game-file problem.
- Buying a faster plan or a new router: More advertised bandwidth does not necessarily improve packet stability or routing. First establish whether the fault is on Wi‑Fi, inside the home, or beyond the gateway.
- Changing graphics settings: Graphics changes can affect FPS, not repair packets that fail to reach the data center.
What to send EA or your ISP
When the evidence points beyond a simple Wi‑Fi issue, provide a concise record rather than only saying “Apex is lagging.” Include:
- Platform and launcher, country or region, and ISP.
- Wired or wireless connection, selected Apex data center, and whether other household devices or games are affected.
- Performance Display readings from the lobby and matches, with screenshots or video if possible.
- Exact date and approximate time for each affected session, plus any visible server identifier or error code.
- Whether Ethernet, a different data center, or a nearby VPN endpoint changes the result.
EA forum support has asked players to share Performance Display information and server IDs when investigating possible server-specific problems; see the EA packet-loss discussion. For an ISP, describe repeatable packet loss or instability toward a specific game destination or route and give the affected time window. Ask whether it can investigate line quality, congestion, or peering; a generic speed-test result alone may not answer that question.
EA reported improvements to CPU performance, rubber-banding, hit registration, and server-error handling in a reliability update dated June 17, 2025. That update is historical context, not evidence that a current incident is or is not server-side: EA’s reliability update. For current issues, use EA’s Apex FAQ, service information, and official PlayApex updates.
