Apex Legends Season 20, Breakout, overhauled Battle Royale progression by tying armor levels to EVO and giving Legends match-by-match upgrade choices. It also brought back an RP-focused Ranked structure, added Thunderdome to Mixtape and introduced Straight Shot as a faster limited-time Battle Royale mode. Breakout ran from February 13 to May 6, 2024; it is a historical season, not the current ruleset. EA’s season archive lists later seasons through Season 29, which ended August 3, 2026.
What changed in Season 20?
Breakout’s defining change was the new relationship between EVO, armor and Legend abilities in Battle Royale (BR). The season also revised Ranked scoring and matchmaking, adjusted weapons and Legends, and added new ways to play. The changes below describe what EA announced for Breakout, not necessarily how Apex Legends works today.
How did EVO, armor and Legend Upgrades work?
In BR, earning EVO advanced both your armor level and your Legend’s progression. Each match started fresh, and reaching Levels 2 and 3 unlocked a choice of Legend Upgrade. Body Shields were removed as BR ground loot. As a Legend leveled, their armor capacity increased.
Shield Cores stored current shield health and could be swapped or dropped; fallen players left their cores in Death Boxes. Picking up a core above your current level temporarily overcharged your armor. The extra shield health lasted 30 seconds, after which the armor returned to its normal maximum capacity.

These systems did not apply in Mixtape: that playlist retained Body Shields and did not use Legend Upgrades.
Where did EVO come from?
EA divided EVO sources between individual actions and squad activity. Personal sources included damage, knocks and knock assists, finishers, and EVO Caches. Team sources included squad wipes, revives, respawns, class interactions, world interactions and EVO Harvesters.
EVO Caches were rare items containing raw EVO; each granted a full level and could be found in contested areas such as vaults and supply drops. EVO Harvesters appeared randomly on BR maps and activated after a delay once the first ring began. Using one awarded EVO to the squad.

What changed in Ranked?
Breakout shifted Ranked back toward a visible RP-based structure. Entry eligibility fell from level 50 to level 20. Players began the season at 1 RP, splits returned, and the split reset lowered rank by six divisions. EA said RP would guide matchmaking; full premade squads were matched according to their highest-ranked player. Player Rankings became visible, while Promotional Trials and Provisional Matches were removed. Demotion and Demotion Protection remained, as in the preceding Ignite season.

Ranked entry costs returned at 20 RP per tier beginning in Silver. Elimination value scaled with placement, and eliminations after the sixth were worth half value. A Challenger Bonus added 50% for contributing to an elimination of a higher-ranked player.
Top 5 streak rewards
Maintaining a fifth-place finish or better across consecutive matches earned an RP bonus. EA’s Breakout schedule was:

What were Thunderdome and Straight Shot?
Thunderdome in Mixtape
Thunderdome was Breakout’s first custom Mixtape map, built as a three-lane arena. It supported Team Deathmatch, Gun Run and Control.
Straight Shot limited-time mode
Straight Shot was designed as a quicker BR experience. Players dropped above a random point of interest without a Jumpmaster, found weapons already kitted at different rarities, and played shorter rounds in lobbies of 30. After dying, players could requeue with their party directly from the death screen.

Replicators and Big Maude
Replicators became free and could be used once per player per match. Crafting rotations ended, returning all weapons and loot to floor loot. Replicators offered Shield Batteries, Med Kits, Ammo and Player Banners. Each match began with 12 replicators, with another arriving at the start of Round 4. Interaction time was reduced; inventory became accessible through the crafting menu, and unclaimed printed items eventually ejected.
Rampart’s Big Maude paintball weapons became free, with a longer dispensing time and a limit of one free weapon per player per match. Loba could take an additional weapon using Black Market, and gold-kitted weapons were removed from Big Maude.

Supply bins, ring warnings and world dressing
Extended Supply Bins gained a hidden Smart Gear shelf with upgrades for Knockdown Shields, Helmets and Backpacks. EA said the bins could more reliably provide Heat Shields and Mobile Respawn Beacons when needed, and were more likely to offer Med Kits than Syringes. Players who stayed outside the Ring too long received a warning followed by elimination.
World’s Edge gained an Apex Games Museum exhibit about the Outlands and the Games. All maps received anniversary dressing and refreshed assets, including Tridents, jump balloons, gravity cannons and loot bins.

- 30-30 Repeater: Base damage dropped from 42 to 39, magazine capacity decreased at several tiers, and the Skullpiercer headshot multiplier fell from 2.1 to 2.0. Dual Loader was removed as an integrated Hop-Up. Reloading three shells consecutively increased reload speed by 20% for the remainder of that reload.
- EVA-8: Moved into Care Packages. Damage fell from 7 to 6 while fire rate rose from 2.4 to 3; Hammer Points and the Care Package version’s Gold Shotgun Bolt behavior also changed.
- Hemlok: Damage decreased from 21 to 20, with increased hipfire spread and spread delay.
- Prowler: Returned to floor loot in its non-Care Package version. Select Fire was removed, damage dropped from 16 to 15, and burst and spread delays increased.
- R-99 and R-301: The R-99 received increased horizontal and vertical recoil while aiming down sights; the R-301’s hipfire spread decreased. Projectile gravity increased across SMGs, and launch speed fell for most SMGs. The 1x Digital Threat could no longer be equipped on SMGs.
- Legends: Catalyst’s Dark Veil became shorter and smaller; Horizon’s Gravity Lift cooldown increased; Conduit’s cooldown and temporary-shield behavior were adjusted; and Mad Maggie’s Wrecking Ball continued after its first enemy hit. Heavy-rig Legends received medium-rig first-person movement animations, but their actual movement speed did not change.
What platform and seasonal features did Breakout add?
On compatible current-generation consoles and displays, Performance Mode targeted up to 120 FPS, with graphics adjusted to support that target; it did not guarantee a particular frame rate. EA also tuned Performance Mode aim assist to feel similar to the 60Hz mode.
The patch added advanced haptics and adaptive-trigger support for PlayStation and PC consoles. EA advised connecting the controller by USB and completing updates if the features did not work correctly. On PC, DX12 received fixes for several causes of crashes. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S received CPU graphics performance improvements through parallelized rendering work.
Breakout also introduced seasonal challenges that unlocked six Legends for everyone, along with rewards including the Reactive Top Tier Flatline and Wraith cosmetics. Clubs were retired at launch; 3–4 character Tags replaced them as a way to show player flair.
