The errors you may see
api-ms-win-core-winrt-robuffer-l1-1-0.dll may appear in messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because api-ms-win-core-winrt-robuffer-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting api-ms-win-core-winrt-robuffer-l1-1-0.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading api-ms-win-core-winrt-robuffer-l1-1-0.dll.”
- “api-ms-win-core-winrt-robuffer-l1-1-0.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The specified module could not be found” with loader error 126.
The 60-second answer
api-ms-win-core-winrt-robuffer-l1-1-0.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows API-set contract associated with Windows Runtime buffer marshaling. Microsoft documents the related RoGetBufferMarshaler API under this contract name.
Do not download the file from a DLL website or copy it into System32. An API-set name can be a virtual alias that Windows redirects to a real system host DLL, so it is not necessarily a normal physical file that should be present on disk.
The correct fix depends on the computer:
- Windows 7 or Windows 8.1: the application may require Windows Runtime APIs that the operating system does not provide. Upgrade Windows or install an application version that supports the installed operating system.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11: install pending updates, repair Windows components with DISM and SFC, then repair or reinstall the affected application.
- One game or application only: verify its files, check its dependencies, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
- Wine or another compatibility layer: update or replace the runner instead of copying Windows DLLs.
What this file name actually means
An API-set contract is an abstraction layer used by Windows. An application imports a stable contract name, and Windows uses its API-set schema to redirect that request to the appropriate physical host binary for that Windows release and architecture. Microsoft explains this behavior in its Windows API sets documentation.

That distinction matters here. The name may be shown in an error even when there is no ordinary file with that exact name that you can safely replace. File inventories may describe it as an “ApiSet Stub DLL,” but that label does not mean it should be registered, downloaded, or manually copied.
The application that displays the error is usually the immediate trigger. The underlying cause may still be Windows compatibility, a damaged component store, an incomplete installation, or another missing dependency.
First checks before repairing anything
Check the Windows version
Press Win + R, type:
winver
Press Enter and record the Windows edition and version.
Windows 7 reached end of support on January 14, 2020. Windows 8.1 also reached end of support on January 10, 2023. If a modern game or application requires Windows Runtime contracts unavailable on those systems, repairing Windows files will not make the program compatible.

Record the complete error
Write down:
- The application or game name
- Its version, if shown
- The complete error text
- Any error number, especially 126
- Whether the error appears during installation, launch, or while loading a saved project
If the message names additional DLLs, record those too. A loader can report one contract while the real failure is a dependent module beneath it.
Check whether the failure is application-specific
Try another modern application. If only one program fails, begin with that program’s launcher or installer. If several unrelated programs fail, Windows servicing or a broader dependency problem becomes more likely.
Do not assume that System32 means the application is 64-bit. Windows architecture redirection and the application’s own architecture matter. A 32-bit program may require x86 dependencies even on 64-bit Windows.

Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair system components
This is the correct first repair path on supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.
Install pending updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on an immediate restart.
- Try the affected application again.

Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. It can remain at one percentage for several minutes. A successful result says the restore operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows before continuing.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
A message saying Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them is a useful result. Restart and test the application. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations but the application still fails, the problem is more likely application compatibility, a missing dependency, a compatibility layer, or a vendor packaging issue.
Repeating SFC without recording what changed rarely adds useful information. Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If one application produces the message, repair that application before making manual changes to Windows folders.
Use Windows app repair
For applications that expose the option:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove local settings or cached data.
Verify a game or launcher installation
Open the game launcher and look for a command named Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. Allow the launcher to replace incomplete files, then restart the launcher and test the game.

For a desktop program without a repair option:
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the developer’s official source.
- Install it again.
- Launch it once as administrator by right-clicking its shortcut and selecting Run as administrator.
Do not copy a replacement DLL into the application folder unless the developer’s official installer specifically provides it. A local copy can be the wrong architecture or can hide the real missing dependency.

Loader error 126 means Windows could not find a required module. The named API-set contract is not always the only failed dependency.
Use a modern dependency inspection tool or the application vendor’s diagnostic procedure to inspect the program’s executable. Look for:
- A missing x86 or x64 runtime
- A missing application DLL
- A dependency loaded from an incorrect directory
- A module blocked by antivirus
- A failure caused by Wine or another compatibility layer
If the program is 32-bit, its dependencies must include 32-bit components. On 64-bit Windows, install the x86 runtime when the application is 32-bit. A 64-bit application generally requires x64 components.
Fix 4: Install Visual C++ Redistributable only when indicated
Visual C++ Redistributable can repair a missing Microsoft C or C++ runtime, but it should not be presented as the universal source of this API-set contract.
Install it when the application documentation, installer, event log, or dependency scan identifies a Visual C++ runtime problem. Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Choose the package that matches the application:
vc_redist.x86.exefor 32-bit applicationsvc_redist.x64.exefor 64-bit applicationsvc_redist.arm64.exefor ARM64 applications
A 64-bit Windows installation may legitimately need both x86 and x64 packages because it can run applications of both architectures. Installing a redistributable does not make Windows 7 compatible with a program that requires newer Windows Runtime APIs.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
An antivirus product may have quarantined an application file or a dependency after an update or reinstall.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- If a trusted file was quarantined, verify its publisher, original location, and digital signature before restoring it.

Microsoft warns that restoring a detected threat can cause it to be detected again, so exclusions should be reserved for a verified false positive.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the timing points to a driver problem
A display, storage, or chipset driver is not the usual cause of this API-set error. Consider driver repair if the message began immediately after a driver change, a Windows migration, or a device failure.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, and System devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Check the driver provider and date.
- Use Update Driver or install a current driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Do not replace a working driver merely because its date is old. Create a restore point before a major driver change where possible.

If the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or security change, System Restore may be appropriate.
- Press
Win + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without deleting personal files. It will not repair a broken Wine runner or replace a defective application installer.

Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 api-ms-win-core-winrt-robuffer-l1-1-0.dll
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An API-set contract is not repaired by registering it, and the command may produce another error or create a false impression that Windows has been fixed. Microsoft documents the command’s actual behavior in its regsvr32 reference.
If you are using Wine or another compatibility layer
When the error appears under Wine, Proton, or similar software, Windows repair commands do not repair the compatibility environment.
Update the runner, try a runner version recommended by the application vendor, and check whether the program officially supports that environment. Do not copy random Windows DLLs into the prefix. API-set mapping depends on the operating system and compatibility layer, and a copied file may create new conflicts.
FAQ
Is api-ms-win-core-winrt-robuffer-l1-1-0.dll malware?
The name refers to a genuine Microsoft Windows API-set contract. That does not prove that every file carrying the name is safe. Verify the source, publisher, signature, and location of any file involved.
Should I download it from a DLL website?
No. A downloaded file may have the wrong version, architecture, signature, or API-set mapping, and it may contain malware. Repair Windows or reinstall the affected application from its official source.
Should I search for it in System32?
You may inspect Windows files while diagnosing the system, but failure to find this exact name is not automatically evidence of corruption. API-set names can be virtual aliases rather than ordinary files on disk.

Can Windows 7 be repaired with SFC or a redistributable?
SFC can repair damaged Windows 7 files, but it cannot add APIs that the operating system does not provide. If the application requires newer Windows Runtime contracts, use a supported Windows release or an older compatible application version.
What should I collect if the error remains?
Record the Windows version and build, application name and version, complete error text, application architecture, recent system changes, Event Viewer entries, and the dependency inspection results. The file name alone is not enough to identify whether Windows, the application, or another dependency failed.
