Apple Pay is a real PlayStation Store payment option, but it is no longer a new PS5-only feature. It was reported available on PS5 on May 9, 2025, and Sony’s current instructions cover both PS5 and PS4. At checkout, you scan a code shown on the console with an iPhone or iPad, then authorize payment on that device. Availability depends on your PlayStation Store region.
What Apple Pay support on PlayStation means
Apple Pay is an additional way to pay for eligible digital purchases in the PlayStation Store—not an Apple Pay app on the console or a contactless tap with a controller. Sony’s checkout flow moves payment authorization to an iPhone or iPad. Sony explains the experience in its PlayStation Store experience overview; its step-by-step support page covers PS5 and PS4.
Sony’s instructions specifically describe buying a game or add-on. Apple Pay may also be offered for other eligible PlayStation Store purchases, but it should not be assumed to work for every PlayStation transaction. PlayStation Store digital checkout is separate from physical purchases through PlayStation Direct, where different rules—including restrictions on some pre-orders—can apply.

How to use Apple Pay on PS5
- Open PlayStation Store on your PS5 and select a game or add-on.
- Choose the edition or price you want and proceed to checkout.
- Select Apple Pay if it appears among the payment options.
- Follow the console’s instructions. A code will be displayed for scanning.
- Use an iPhone or iPad to scan the code, choose an eligible card in Apple Pay, and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.
- Return to the console and check that the purchase is complete.
You need the Apple device nearby to scan the code and authorize payment. The card is not entered with the controller. Treat Apple Pay as a phone-assisted checkout option; do not assume that the Apple Pay card is saved to your PlayStation account as a regular payment card.

Does Apple Pay work on PS4?
Yes. The original PS5 availability was reported on May 9, 2025, and coverage in June 2025 reported wider availability and PS4 support. Sony’s current support page now provides separate Apple Pay instructions for both consoles. Early reports describing it as PS5-only reflected the initial rollout, not the current support documentation.
Where is it available?
Apple Pay is region-limited. Sony says the option will not appear if it is unavailable in your region. Its U.S. support page lists the United States and many other supported countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and others. Check Sony’s current supported-region list rather than assuming that availability of Apple Pay generally in your country means it is enabled for your PlayStation Store.

Your PlayStation account’s country or region matters. A payment card issued in a different region may fail verification, as Sony notes in its Store payment troubleshooting guidance. Do not change your account’s country merely to make Apple Pay appear; account regions and payment eligibility are not interchangeable.
What you need
- A PS5 or PS4 with access to the PlayStation Store.
- A PlayStation Store region where Sony offers Apple Pay.
- An iPhone or iPad with Apple Pay set up and an eligible funding method available.
- The ability to scan the code shown on the TV and complete any bank or device authentication prompt.
Sony does not state a universal minimum iOS or iPadOS version in its current Apple Pay instructions, so there is no basis here to promise a specific minimum. Keep the device updated if the scan or payment sheet does not work.

Apple Pay versus other PlayStation payment options
Apple Pay can be useful if you already use an iPhone or iPad and would rather authorize a purchase there than type card details with a controller. It does not eliminate payment verification, guarantee a refund, or necessarily beat a card already saved to your PlayStation account for speed. Sony describes the option as easy, secure, and private; that is Sony’s characterization, not a guarantee that any payment method is risk-free.
Apple Pay is optional. Cards, PayPal, and other payment services remain available where supported. In the United States, Sony lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Cash App Pay. Available methods differ by region. You can also use PlayStation Store wallet funds or gift cards where applicable; gift cards must match the account’s region. See Sony’s accepted payment methods.

Apple Pay itself does not require a separate subscription. It is not a workaround for child-account restrictions: Sony says child accounts cannot add payment methods or wallet funds, and purchases instead draw on the family manager’s wallet within the applicable spending limit. If Apple Pay is missing or a purchase fails
- Check the PlayStation Store region. The option does not appear in unsupported regions; confirm your account’s region against Sony’s list.
- Check Apple Pay setup. Make sure Apple Pay is configured on the iPhone or iPad and has a valid eligible payment method.
- Scan the displayed code with the Apple device. Keep the device available and complete any Face ID, Touch ID, passcode, or bank verification prompt.
- Consider a region mismatch. A card registered in another country may not be accepted for the account’s store.
- Try another checkout route or payment method. Sony recommends trying an online PlayStation Store purchase or an alternative payment method if checkout cannot be completed.
Do not assume that a failed transaction means Apple Pay is unavailable everywhere, or that changing your PSN region is an appropriate fix. Sony’s Apple Pay troubleshooting page has the current instructions.
