ChatGPT was Apple’s top free iPhone app in the United States in 2025, while YouTube ranked No. 1 among free iPad apps. Apple’s year-end App Store charts also placed Block Blast! first among free iPhone games, Minecraft first among paid iPhone games, Procreate first among paid iPad apps, and NFL Retro Bowl ’26 atop Apple Arcade.
These are U.S. download rankings for Apple’s 2025 retrospective charts—not worldwide rankings, revenue tables, active-user lists, or measurements of time spent in each app.
The biggest App Store chart leaders of 2025
| Category | No. 1 title |
|---|---|
| Free iPhone app | ChatGPT |
| Free iPad app | YouTube |
| Paid iPhone app | HotSchedules Business |
| Paid iPad app | Procreate |
| Free iPhone game | Block Blast! |
| Paid iPhone game | Minecraft |
| Apple Arcade game | NFL Retro Bowl ’26 |
Apple separates its year-end lists by device, free or paid status, app or game category, and Apple Arcade membership. That structure matters: ChatGPT’s No. 1 position does not mean it was Apple’s top app across every device and category, and HotSchedules Business led a separate paid-app chart rather than competing directly with free downloads.
Apple’s official pages are labeled “Get the US’s Top Apps of 2025” and “Get the US’s Top Games of 2025.”

Top free iPad apps in the U.S. in 2025
| Rank | App |
|---|---|
| 1 | YouTube |
| 2 | ChatGPT |
| 3 | Netflix |
| 4 | Disney+ |

YouTube topped the free iPad chart, with ChatGPT in second place. The extended Apple list also included Goodnotes, Toca Boca World, Google Chrome, Color by Number, TikTok, Canva, Gmail, CapCut, Spotify, Tubi, Pinterest, Peacock, Microsoft Teams, Instagram, Duolingo, HBO Max, Google Search, YouTube Kids, and Amazon Shopping.
The platform split is notable: video services dominate the iPad leaders, while creative and productivity tools such as Goodnotes and Canva also appear prominently. That is an observation about the chart, not proof that iPad owners spend more time watching video or that iPhone owners prefer AI.

HotSchedules Business was the top paid iPhone app. Because Apple publishes paid downloads separately, this result should not be interpreted as a claim that it generated more revenue than free apps supported by subscriptions, advertising, commerce, or in-app purchases.

iPad game leaders
Apple’s iPad game rankings were separate from the iPhone game charts. The leading free iPad games were Roblox, Block Blast!, and Fortnite. The top three paid iPad games were Minecraft, Geometry Dash, and Stardew Valley.
That difference reinforces why the platform labels matter. A title’s position on iPhone cannot simply be transferred to iPad, even when the same game is available on both devices.
Top Apple Arcade games
Apple published Apple Arcade as its own chart rather than combining subscription-catalogue titles with ordinary paid App Store games. The top 10 were:
- NFL Retro Bowl ’26
- NBA 2K25 Arcade Edition
- Balatro+
- Snake.io+
- Sneaky Sasquatch
- Hello Kitty Island Adventure
- Fruit Ninja Classic+
- Bloons TD 6+
- PGA TOUR Pro Golf
- Solitaire by MobilityWare+
The extended list included UNO: Arcade Edition, Cooking Mama: Cuisine!, Skate City: New York, Tomb of the Mask+, RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic+, Angry Birds Reloaded, Stardew Valley+, Wheel of Fortune Daily, PAC-MAN 256+, and The Game of Life 2+.

AI became a mainstream download category
ChatGPT’s No. 1 free iPhone position, together with Google Gemini’s top-10 appearance, shows strong consumer acquisition for AI assistant apps. The chart does not reveal download totals, retention, subscription conversion, or how frequently people used either service, so it cannot establish that AI dominated overall app usage.
Possible explanations include greater mainstream awareness of generative AI, viral product launches and social sharing, and the broad range of tasks associated with AI assistants. Those are reasonable hypotheses, not causes Apple reported for the ranking.
Video remained central on iPad
YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video occupied the first five free iPad positions. The larger display is a plausible fit for long-form video, creator content, music, and entertainment, but the chart itself establishes only their download positions—not the reason for them.

Established games still had significant reach
Minecraft, Fortnite, Roblox, Stardew Valley, Geometry Dash, and Bloons TD 6 all appeared among the leading game charts. Alongside newer or heavily promoted titles, these enduring franchises suggest that familiar games continued to attract downloads in 2025.
How to read Apple’s charts correctly
- U.S. only: The cited Apple pages are localized to the United States. They should not be described as global rankings.
- Downloads, not usage: A download chart does not measure active users, engagement, screen time, retention, or revenue.
- Free and paid are separate: A paid-chart leader is not necessarily the highest-earning app or game.
- Apps and games are separate: Apple does not treat the game lists as a subset to be merged casually with the app rankings.
- Apple Arcade is separate: Subscription-catalogue games are listed independently from paid App Store games.
- Year-end, not live: These are Apple’s retrospective 2025 lists, not continuously updated App Store rankings.
- Availability varies: Apple notes that some titles may not appear in displayed charts because of restrictions or age ratings. Regional availability and account settings can also affect what a user can download.
The charts should also not be confused with Apple’s App Store Awards. Awards are editorial recognitions; these lists are download rankings.
For wider context, Apple said its App Store averaged more than 850 million weekly users globally in 2025, but that figure is neither a download total nor a basis for calculating the rankings. See Apple’s 2025 services retrospective.
