A 17-year-old apprentice welder, Dwayne Bell, reportedly received a six-figure compensation settlement after suffering severe burns in a 2021 accident at a steel yard in Wigan. News coverage describes him as becoming a “human fireball,” but the exact settlement amount has not been disclosed.
What happened to Dwayne Bell?
Bell was an apprentice at Qualfab Steel Ltd when the accident happened at the company’s steel yard in Wigan, Greater Manchester, in March 2021, according to Brit Brief’s 2 October 2026 report. The report says he was burning rubbish in a metal bin. After wet wood failed to catch, he used paint thinner without seeing sparks underneath it. This account comes from news coverage; it is not an official incident investigation.
The phrase “human fireball” is a description used in coverage, not a technical finding about how the accident occurred. The available reports do not establish an official cause.
What injuries did he suffer?
Brit Brief reports that Bell suffered third-degree burns, spent a week in an induced coma and three weeks in hospital, and later underwent three skin grafts. It says he may need further surgery. AOL’s SWNS-supplied report, also published on 2 October 2026, likewise describes severe burns and a week in an induced coma.

How much compensation did Bell receive?
The reports say Express Solicitors negotiated a six-figure settlement for Bell, but they do not disclose the exact sum or provide a settlement document. The coverage describes a negotiated settlement, not damages awarded by a court.
Neil Sagar, identified by Brit Brief as a senior associate at Express Solicitors, said Bell’s injuries and scars continue to affect him. Sagar also said: “Businesses need to make sure appropriate supervision and training are given to apprentices, especially when working with dangerous disposal methods.”

What did Bell say about training and supervision?
AOL’s SWNS-supplied report says Bell attended Knowsley Tech College one day a week and spent the rest of the week at the yard. In that report, Bell said he had not received meaningful training about the dangers of the task and had not been given safety goggles.
Bell described the moment of the accident this way: “The next thing I knew, the world just turned orange. The sound was like a jet engine.” He also said: “This shouldn’t have happened. I wasn’t supervised, and no trainee should ever be put in that position.” These statements are attributed to Bell in the coverage; they do not amount to an official finding about the employer’s conduct.
