Archie Gray stands out in the available evidence for his documented flexibility between midfield and defence, while England’s tournament reports show him used in more than one way. They do not establish that he is better than Jobe Bellingham, Josh King, Lewis Miley, Sydie Peck or the other midfielders named in England’s 2025 U21 EURO squad. The clearest comparison is about selection, deployment and what the sources actually say—not a statistical ranking.

What distinguishes Gray’s documented profile?
Tottenham lists Gray as a midfielder and describes him as a “versatile midfielder/defender.” That club description supports calling out his flexibility across those areas; it does not quantify how often he played in each role or show that he is stronger than his England peers. In a March 2026 article, Tottenham reported that Gray had made 31 all-competition appearances by that point, praised his recent midfield displays and noted his ability to cover across the backline. It also said he had completed each of the previous seven league matches in full as of that article. These are dated club claims, distinct from the later season totals on the player profile. How did England use Gray and his peers at the 2025 U21 EURO?
The June 2025 tournament squad gives an earlier, larger comparison group: Elliot Anderson, Jobe Bellingham, Archie Gray, Hayden Hackney, Jack Hinshelwood, Tyler Morton and Alex Scott were listed among England’s midfielders. Opener against Czechia: Gray started
Gray was in England’s starting XI for the 3–1 win over Czechia on 12 June 2025. The match report records Hayden Hackney replacing Alex Scott in the 85th minute. The lineup and substitution document who played and when, but do not by themselves define every player’s tactical assignment. England’s Czechia match report.
Semi-final against the Netherlands: Gray came on late
In England’s 2–1 semi-final win over the Netherlands on 25 June 2025, Alex Scott and Elliot Anderson were listed in midfield. Hackney replaced Scott in the 84th minute, and Gray entered in the 90th minute for Harvey Elliott. Gray’s substitution for an advanced player shows how he was used in that match; it is not enough to label him generally as an attacking midfielder. England’s Netherlands match report.

What can—and can’t—be concluded about strengths?
The best-supported qualitative distinction is Gray’s club-described ability to cover both midfield and defence, alongside his documented tournament use as a starter and, in another match, a late substitute. The reports also show Scott and Anderson listed in midfield in the semi-final and Hackney coming on for Scott. They offer examples of selection and substitution, not a reliable profile of each player’s recurring role.
UEFA’s analysis of the 2025 final describes England playing through Germany’s press. Tournament Player of the Tournament Harvey Elliott said: “The plan was the same through the whole game – to play out from back and find the gaps in between their midfield. We did it so many times in the first half and we scored two great goals from it. In the second half it was harder because we had a lot of pressure on ourselves.” That is Elliott describing England’s team plan, not Gray’s individual role. UEFA’s final analysis.
The cited official sources do not provide consistent, same-competition and same-season figures for Gray and his peers on progression, chance creation, defensive work or contribution in possession. They therefore cannot support an apples-to-apples verdict about who is the strongest midfielder in a particular attribute.
