No. Armored Core is not one uninterrupted story: some games are direct sequels or continuations, while others begin a new story continuity. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is officially standalone, so you can play it without knowing the plots of earlier games.
Do you need to play earlier games before Armored Core VI?
No. Bandai Namco Entertainment America described Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon as a “fully standalone experience, with no story connections to previous entries of the series” in its August 25, 2023 launch notice: Bandai Namco’s launch announcement. You can start with AC VI without learning earlier characters, events, or settings.
AC VI still feels like part of the same franchise. Its mech assembly and action carry forward recognizable series ideas, but shared gameplay and design do not mean its story continues an older game. Director Masaru Yamamura described the series’ defining experience as “Assembly” in a 2023 PlayStation Blog interview.
How the main Armored Core story runs connect
PlayStation’s 2025 series history outlines several distinct runs rather than a single continuous plot. It is a high-level guide to the major games, not a complete canon reference for every spin-off or supplementary work.

| Game or run | How it connects |
|---|---|
| Armored Core, Project Phantasma, and Master of Arena | Project Phantasma is described as a prequel to the original game, and Master of Arena as a direct sequel to Project Phantasma. |
| Armored Core 2 and Another Age | Armored Core 2 is described as a sequel set decades after the original PlayStation games; Another Age follows it. |
| Armored Core 3 through Last Raven | Armored Core 3 does not follow the preceding games’ story. Its story continues through Silent Line, Nexus, Nine Breaker, and Last Raven. |
| Armored Core 4 and For Answer | Armored Core 4 reboots the story. For Answer is its direct follow-up, set a decade after AC4. |
| Armored Core V and Verdict Day | AC V introduces a changed setting. Verdict Day resumes its plot 100 years after AC V’s events. |
| Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon | Standalone story with no story connections to earlier entries, according to Bandai Namco. |
The connections in this overview follow the descriptions in PlayStation’s history of Armored Core. Terms such as “sequel,” “prequel,” “reboot,” and “standalone” describe story relationships; recurring mech customization or franchise references alone do not establish that two games share a plot.
What to play if you want a connected story
- For the original PlayStation run: Start with Armored Core, then follow the prequel-and-sequel relationship through Project Phantasma and Master of Arena.
- For the AC2 run: Play Armored Core 2 before Another Age.
- For the AC3 run: Begin at Armored Core 3 and continue through Silent Line, Nexus, Nine Breaker, and Last Raven.
- For the AC4 run: Play Armored Core 4 before For Answer.
- For the AC V run: Play Armored Core V before Verdict Day.
- For a self-contained starting point: Play Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon; earlier story knowledge is not required.
These suggestions follow the major relationships identified in PlayStation’s overview; they are not a claim that every spin-off, adaptation, or supplementary publication fits neatly into one exhaustive timeline.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the series can feel connected even when its stories are not
Armored Core carries forward a recognizable focus on piloting and assembling a mech, even as individual entries change their setting and story. Producer Yasunori Ogura said AC VI retained the series’ core appeal while drawing on experience gained across the studio’s other titles in the same 2023 PlayStation interview. That continuity of design is different from continuity of plot.
