They are software downloads—often DLLs, EXEs, JARs, or ZIP bundles—and some launch workflows execute code or load modules into the game. Treat each release like any other program: verify where it came from, check its contents and instructions, scan it with current protection, and don’t run it if anything is unexplained. A clean scan or tournament listing is not a guarantee that a particular file is harmless.
What you may be downloading
BWAPI describes itself as a free, open-source C++ framework for creating agents for StarCraft: Brood War. Its documented example build produces an ExampleAIModule.dll, which is placed in the game’s bwapi-data/AI directory; the game is then launched through Chaoslauncher with a BWAPI injector. BWAPI’s defaults for game-state visibility and user-input access can be changed, but those are controls over game behavior—not an operating-system security sandbox. BWAPI documentation.
Other tools accept different formats. DropLauncher documents support for bot modules (.dll), clients (.exe, .jar), and ZIP files, and describes loading bot files to connect to a LAN game. It recommends using a copy of the StarCraft directory. That can help preserve your original game setup, but it does not isolate your computer from code the bot or launcher runs. Archives can also contain multiple components. The Starcraft AI Tournament Manager repository includes precompiled JARs, BWAPI DLLs, and zipped bots and maps from AIIDE competitions held in 2014–2016. Its README warns that the manager regularly creates, deletes, and sends files over sockets, and says to use it at your own risk. That warning describes the manager; it is not evidence that the bundled bots are malicious. Tournament Manager repository.

Checklist before you run a bot

Get it from the original source
Prefer the bot author’s project or release page, or the competition archive identified by the author. Avoid mirrors and reuploads when an original release is available. A repository or tournament publication helps establish provenance, but does not certify a file as safe. Microsoft’s guidance is to verify where a file came from and use trusted sources. Inspect the archive and expected file types
Before extracting or launching anything, compare the archive contents with the project’s instructions. DLLs, EXEs, JARs, data files, and a launcher can be part of a documented setup. An unexplained installer, script, or unrelated bundled application is a reason to stop and investigate. Microsoft advises checking the source and whether a file type matches expectations. Scan with current protection
Update your antivirus security intelligence, scan the download, and pay attention to browser or Windows warnings. Do not disable protection or add an antivirus exclusion just to make a bot run. Unknown files may lack reputation and trigger warnings; a warning warrants investigation but does not by itself prove malware. Conversely, no warning or detection is not a safety guarantee. Understand the launch path
Read the release’s launch instructions and identify every component you are starting. BWAPI’s documented flow uses an injector and a bot DLL; other launchers may load DLL, EXE, JAR, or ZIP bot files. Stop if the instructions unexpectedly ask you to disable security, run an unrelated installer, grant privileges unrelated to the task, or execute an unexplained script. Choose a suitable test environment
A separate StarCraft directory can keep bot-related game files from altering your usual installation, as DropLauncher recommends. It does not sandbox the program. If you do not trust a bot enough to run it on your everyday system, do not run it there; use a properly isolated environment only if you know how to configure and operate one. Treat source code as evidence, not a verdict
Source code and build instructions make a project more inspectable. AIIDE’s 2011 rules page describes requiring source files and build instructions, while historical competition archives have published source and binaries. That improves traceability, but it does not establish that a particular downloaded binary matches reviewed source or that it is safe. AIIDE rules.

How to compare two bot releases
There is no useful numerical risk score in the available evidence. Compare releases across these practical signals instead:

What a tournament listing or clean scan can—and cannot—tell you
Competition publication and repository hosting help answer where a file came from; they are not security certifications. For example, the Starcraft AI Tournament Manager repository’s disclaimer is about the manager’s own file and socket activity, not proof that every bundled bot is malicious. Historical tournament requirements for source and build instructions likewise improve inspectability without proving that an individual binary is safe.

There is no established prevalence figure for malicious community StarCraft bots or a safety rate for their downloads. Figures from the 2016 AIIDE competition—21 competitors, each playing 1,800 games, as reported in a 2017 AAAI review—describe tournament participation and play, not security outcomes. AAAI review.
When you need to assess one specific file
A general checklist cannot certify an unidentified binary. To make an artifact-specific assessment, identify the bot and version, locate the exact release URL, and record the downloaded file’s hash. Then compare its provenance, contents, instructions, and launch behavior against the checks above. This guidance concerns StarCraft: Brood War and BWAPI-related workflows; it does not validate StarCraft II bots, any current release, mirror, binary hash, or scan result.
