Under Mojang/Microsoft’s published terms, creators may not sell or try to make money from Minecraft: Java Edition mods. The rules allow distribution of qualifying standalone mods under conditions, but that permission is not an express exception to the EULA’s no-money wording. Whether a particular arrangement is lawful under local law is a separate question.
What the Minecraft EULA says about paid Java mods
The Minecraft End User License Agreement (EULA) says that original Java Edition mods belong to their creators, but that ownership does not include Minecraft’s code or content. The same passage limits what creators may do with a mod. Mojang/Minecraft’s EULA says: “Any Mods you create for Minecraft: Java Edition from scratch belong to you (including pre-run Mods and in-memory Mods) and you can do whatever you want with them, as long as you don’t sell them for money / try to make money from them and so long as you don’t distribute Modded Versions of the game.” Minecraft End User License Agreement
That is why the practical answer to “Can I sell a Minecraft mod?” is no under the published EULA terms for Java Edition. The text expressly addresses both selling a mod and trying to make money from it; it does not make the restriction depend on whether the mod is sold through a particular platform.
Distribution and monetization are different questions
Minecraft’s EULA and Usage Guidelines distinguish distributing a qualifying mod from monetizing it. The Usage Guidelines describe a mod as an original plug-in that extends Minecraft without substantial Minecraft copyrightable code or content. Their modifications section permits creating, using, and distributing qualifying mods subject to conditions, but does not expressly say creators may sell them. Minecraft Usage Guidelines
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Distribute the mod only—not Minecraft’s client, server software, or a bundled “Modded Version” of the game.
- Do not create play-to-earn functionality that produces cashable currency.
- Do not make the mod verify access to out-of-game content or services that affect gameplay.
The EULA separately says a combination of a mod with Minecraft: Java Edition is a “Modded Version” and may not be distributed. So permission to share a standalone mod is not permission to bundle or redistribute Minecraft itself, and it does not amount to permission to charge for the mod.
Do donations, subscriptions, or paid early access count?
The published pages reviewed do not individually resolve donations, subscriptions, Patreon access, paid early access, or a release that becomes free later. Because the EULA bars trying to make money from a mod, these arrangements should not be treated as approved workarounds simply because the final download is free or the payment is described differently. Their treatment can depend on the facts and the applicable law; the policy text alone does not settle every arrangement.

What about selling Minecraft content through the Marketplace?
Minecraft describes a separate official route for eligible creator content: approved partners can sell creations through Minecraft Marketplace, where players buy content with Minecoins. Minecraft Partner Program for Creators and Studios The Partner Program page does not establish that every Java mod qualifies, nor does Marketplace participation authorize selling a separate mod elsewhere. Check the current program terms and eligibility before pursuing that route.

Is a paid Minecraft mod illegal under the law?
The EULA and Usage Guidelines state Minecraft’s published contractual and policy rules; they are not a jurisdiction-specific legal ruling. The sources do not establish what a court in a particular country would decide about a specific payment or access model. For a real project, distinguish the platform’s stated terms from the legal analysis that may apply where you and your users are located, and consult a qualified attorney if the commercial decision matters.
