Are Retro Video Games Making a Comeback? What the Evidence Shows

Retro games are back in circulation through compatible hardware, reissues and subscription libraries. But broad industry spending totals do not show whether the retro market is growing.

Yes in visibility and availability, but a broad sales comeback has not been established. Classic games are playable through cartridge-compatible hardware, reissued collections and subscription libraries. Those options show that retro gaming remains part of the market; industry-wide spending figures do not show whether retro games themselves are growing.

What counts as retro gaming?

“Retro gaming” can describe several different activities, and evidence about one does not automatically apply to the others:

  • Playing original media: using original cartridges or discs, sometimes with modern-compatible hardware.
  • Buying a reissue: playing a collection of older titles on a current console.
  • Using a subscription library: accessing legacy games while eligible for a subscription service.
  • Collecting vintage games and systems: buying original hardware and releases, whether to play or preserve them.

These experiences differ in compatibility, ownership and access. A modern collection or subscription library is not the same thing as owning an original cartridge or console.

How can you play classic games today?

Use original Atari cartridges on compatible hardware

Atari describes its Atari 2600+ as compatible with Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges and says a 10-in-1 cartridge is included. This is a dedicated hardware route for people who want to use cartridges rather than buy a collection or rely on a subscription. Check the product listing for current regional availability and specific cartridge compatibility before buying.

Buy a collection for a current console

Atari advertises Flashback Classics for Nintendo Switch as a 150-game collection featuring arcade and home-console classics. A collection offers a selection of games on a current system; it does not provide the same experience as original hardware and media. Check the current listing for availability and format.

Access classic libraries through a subscription

Nintendo says eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members have access to classic-game collections covering NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube and Virtual Boy. The Expansion Pack is required for the listed libraries. Membership terms and supported hardware can change, so verify them with Nintendo before subscribing.

Does the market data prove retro games are booming?

No. The available headline figures describe the wider games business, not a retro-only sales category.

Measure What it says What it does not establish
U.S. consumer spending, 2025 The Entertainment Software Association, reporting with Circana and Sensor Tower in 2026, put U.S. video-game consumer spending at $60.7 billion, up 1.4% from 2024. The total includes physical and digital games, add-on content, subscriptions, mobile, cloud, PC, console and VR, as well as hardware and accessories. ESA’s report It does not isolate spending on retro games, vintage collecting or reissues.
UK boxed software, 2024 Ukie reported that boxed game software fell 34% year over year and represented 4% of total UK video-game spending. Ukie’s figures This is an overall physical-software measure, not a count of classic releases or collector purchases.
U.S. new physical software Circana’s industry page reports a July low of $85 million in new physical software dollar sales since its tracking began in 1995, and says 2026 year-to-date spending on new physical software was concentrated in Nintendo and PlayStation games. These figures concern new physical games and broad platform shares, not older games or the vintage market.

These measures also cover different geographies and categories: U.S. total spending, UK boxed software and U.S. new physical software are not interchangeable. Atari and Nintendo product pages confirm that particular ways to access classic games are offered; they do not report sales growth or how many people are choosing them.

How to choose a way to play

Start with the particular games and systems you want, then compare the kind of access each option provides:

  • Want to use cartridges you already own? Look for compatible hardware and check your specific cartridge against the manufacturer’s compatibility information.
  • Want a selection of older games on a current console? A collection may be simpler, but confirm its actual catalog and current availability.
  • Want access across several legacy systems? A subscription library may suit you if its included games and ongoing membership terms fit your needs.
  • Want original ownership or collecting? Reissues and subscription access do not replace original media or vintage hardware.

Compare current cost and regional availability before deciding; neither follows from the existence of a product listing or library alone.

What “comeback” can accurately mean

Retro gaming is clearly available through modern hardware, collections and subscription libraries. That is a meaningful return to visibility and access, but it is not proof that retro games as a whole are enjoying a sales boom. A confident claim about market growth would require comparable sales or audience data specifically tracking retro games.
