Yes. Slimes are hostile mobs in Minecraft: when they spot a player or iron golem, they hop toward the target and try to envelop it. They do not need to be provoked like neutral mobs.
How slimes behave toward players
Minecraft’s official Mob Menagerie: Slime article, published February 6, 2025, describes slimes as hostile. They hop aimlessly until they spot a player or iron golem, then move toward that target and try to envelop it. The article describes three usual sizes: small, medium, and large.
The article characterizes slimes as less challenging than many hostile mobs, but says they can be annoying if not dealt with promptly. That is a general description, not a guarantee about difficulty in every encounter.
What “hostile” means in Minecraft
Hostility is about a mob’s behavior toward players, not whether the player has attacked first. Minecraft’s general mob guide, published September 22, 2023, distinguishes three broad categories:

- Passive mobs never attack players.
- Neutral mobs are usually passive but attack when particular conditions are met.
Slimes belong to the hostile category, so spotting one is enough to make it approach; they are not neutral mobs that become aggressive only after a specific provocation.
