No confirmed 2027 consumer launch date has been announced for either the next PlayStation or the next Xbox. A canceled Blade Runner game was reportedly planned for September 2027 on then-unannounced “Gen 10” PlayStation and Xbox systems. That was a game release plan, not proof those consoles would be available to buy. Microsoft has since said developer alpha hardware for its next-generation console, Project Helix, is planned to begin shipping in 2027—but that is not a retail launch announcement.
What the canceled Blade Runner game reportedly said about 2027
On April 23, 2025, Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw reported that Supermassive Games had been developing an unannounced game called Blade Runner: Time To Live, and that the project had been canceled. The report said its planned full release was September 2027, targeting PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and “Gen 10” Xbox and PlayStation systems. Insider Gaming’s report described plans drawn from documents and sources; it was not a public hardware roadmap from Sony or Microsoft.
The distinction matters: a studio can plan a game for platforms expected to exist by a target date without confirming when those platforms will launch. The report did not establish that the next consoles would be on sale in September 2027, or even that the game’s plan had been based on official launch dates.
What was reported about the game
Insider Gaming described the project as a character-focused cinematic action adventure set in 2065, starring So-Lange, a Nexus-6 replicant. Stealth, combat, exploration, investigation, and character interaction were among its planned elements. The report said pre-production began in September 2024, was scheduled to end in March 2025, and prototyping was scheduled to finish in September 2025. Those dates and features were reported plans for a canceled project, not a release schedule for the consoles.

What is known about its cancellation
The same report said the game was canceled late in 2024 and attributed responsibility to rights owner Alcon Entertainment, while noting that specific details were not published. Supermassive said it was unable to comment, and Alcon had not responded when the report appeared. The stated attribution should not be treated as an independently confirmed explanation for the cancellation.
What Microsoft has officially confirmed about Project Helix
Microsoft has confirmed that Project Helix is the name of its next-generation first-party console. In an Xbox Wire statement published March 11, 2026, Jason Ronald, Xbox Vice President, Next Generation, said it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games and that Microsoft is working with AMD on a custom SoC. Most relevant to the 2027 question, Ronald said: “I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” Xbox Wire’s Project Helix announcement describes developer hardware, not a consumer launch date.

Alpha hardware is intended for developers to work with before a console reaches consumers. A 2027 start for those shipments does not, on its own, establish when a finished Project Helix console will launch, what it will cost, or when it will be available in stores.
Has Sony announced a next-generation PlayStation date?
The sources relevant to the Blade Runner claim do not establish a Sony consumer launch date for its next-generation PlayStation. Notebookcheck’s April 29, 2025 article interpreted the canceled game’s “Gen 10” targets as a possible sign of 2027 consoles and discussed November timing, but those were the publication’s inferences—not a Sony announcement. Its article, updated February 18, 2026, also noted that neither company had officially revealed the respective consoles or dates. Notebookcheck’s analysis should therefore be read as speculation about timing, not confirmation.

Should you buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X now, or wait?
The available evidence does not settle this as a technical or price comparison: it does not establish next-generation retail dates, specifications, current prices, or inventory. The practical choice is whether you want to play current-generation games now or prefer to wait for official launch details before committing.
- Buy now if you want access to current games and the cost fits your budget. The canceled game’s reported plan named PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as targets, but that does not guarantee a particular title or future game will arrive on those systems.
- Wait for confirmed details if you would rather compare the next consoles’ launch timing and specifications before choosing. A reported game target and a developer-hardware milestone are not enough to make that comparison yet.
What the 2027 claim actually supports
The canceled game is evidence that its reported release plan included then-unannounced “Gen 10” PlayStation and Xbox systems for September 2027. Microsoft’s later statement independently confirms a plan to begin shipping Project Helix alpha hardware to developers in 2027. Neither fact confirms that both next-generation consoles will reach consumers that year; the cited sources provide no Sony retail date.
