Bedrock Edition uses a different distribution, and Minecraft’s official pages give conflicting information about its total.
What does “three strongholds” mean?
In Java Edition, strongholds generate in rings around the world origin. The first ring contains three strongholds; it is only the first part of the layout, not the world total. Minecraft’s Stronghold article describes eight rings.

How many strongholds are in Java Edition?
The official article lists three strongholds in the first ring, six in the second, 10 in the third, and 15 in the fourth. It says the pattern continues through the eighth ring, which has nine strongholds. Adding the listed counts across the rings gives 128.
The ring counts are: 3, 6, 10, 15, followed by the remaining rings described by Minecraft’s article. The article does not list every intermediate ring count in the cited text, so the clearest takeaway is that three applies to the first ring only.

Does Bedrock Edition also use three rings?
No. Minecraft describes Bedrock strongholds as randomly distributed throughout the Overworld, at least 160 blocks from original spawn. That is not the Java ring arrangement. The official Stronghold article does not establish a definitive Bedrock total.
Do all strongholds contain an End portal?
No, not in every edition. Minecraft’s Block of the Week: End Portal Frame article says every Java stronghold has an End portal, while only some Bedrock strongholds do.

Why do Minecraft’s official pages disagree about the Bedrock total?
The Stronghold article describes Bedrock placement as random without giving a fixed total. A separate official portal-frame article says both versions have 128 strongholds. Because those statements do not align clearly for Bedrock, the available official pages do not support treating 128 as a verified Bedrock limit. The Stronghold article’s edition-specific generation description is the more useful answer to how Bedrock strongholds are placed.
The Stronghold article reports a publication date of June 7, 2024, while the portal-frame article reports February 14, 2022. Neither page specifies a game release version, so these claims should be read as descriptions on those pages rather than guarantees tied to a particular update.
