Yes. The differences that matter most when buying or using a PS5 from another region are account and PlayStation Store settings, disc-game add-on compatibility, warranty coverage, and a few model-specific hardware or language restrictions. Sony does not document a blanket rule that imported PS5 game discs cannot play; check each compatibility question separately.
What can differ between regional PS5 consoles?
A console’s sales market, its model group, and the country/region set on a PlayStation account are separate things. A particular market SKU may have a language or account restriction, while the account region determines which Store and vouchers apply. The model group determines whether some hardware accessories are supported.
Sony’s Japanese-language-only PS5 Digital Edition is a specific example, not a rule for all consoles sold in Japan. Sony says it supports only Japanese as the console language, uses Japanese PlayStation accounts and the Japanese Store, and does not differ in performance from other models. Will games from another region work?
Do not assume that every foreign PS5 game disc is blocked. Sony’s account guidance establishes a specific restriction for add-ons: an add-on cannot be used with a disc game if the game’s licensed country/region does not match. Check the region information on the game’s packaging and make sure the add-on is intended for that game’s region. Sony’s guidance does not establish a blanket ban on playing imported PS5 game discs. How do account, Store, and voucher regions affect you?
PlayStation Store content and services vary by country/region. An account’s country/region cannot be changed after the account is created, and voucher codes must match the account’s country/region. If you are setting up an account, select the intended country/region carefully; when buying a voucher or digital content, check that it is for that account’s market.
- Digital purchases: Store availability and services depend on the account’s country/region.
- Vouchers: The code’s region must match the account’s region.
- Disc-game add-ons: The add-on region must match the licensed region of the disc game.
Does Digital Edition disc support vary by model?
Yes. Sony distinguishes Digital Edition model groups: the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media. Sony says its separately sold CFI-ZDD1 disc drive is compatible with CFI-2000 model-group Digital Edition consoles and CFI-7000 model-group consoles. Check the identifier on the exact console and confirm compatibility before purchasing an optional PS5 disc drive; the phrase “Digital Edition” alone is not enough to establish support.

What about Blu-ray and DVD movies?
Video-disc region behavior is a separate issue from PS5 game-disc compatibility. Sony’s CFI-21XX instruction manual describes BD/DVD region-code settings and says the code can be changed up to four times. Its listed codes and behavior apply to that manual’s model group, so consult the manual for your own unit before relying on an imported console to play movie discs. Sony’s US PS5 warranty says coverage is valid only in the United States and Canada; it provides a one-year warranty from original purchase for the original purchaser, subject to the warranty’s terms and exclusions. What to check before buying a PS5 from another region
- Identify the exact model group. Confirm the model number and whether its Digital Edition supports the disc drive you intend to use.
- Check language and account restrictions. For a market-specific SKU, read Sony’s support information and verify that its supported console language and account region fit your needs.
- Plan your account and purchases. Choose the intended account country/region carefully, then match Store purchases and voucher codes to it.
- Match disc games and add-ons. Check the game’s licensed region before buying DLC or other add-ons for it.
- Confirm warranty and return options. Read the warranty for the console’s sales market and check the seller’s return policy and authorization.
- Check movie-disc requirements separately. Use the manual for the exact model group if Blu-ray or DVD playback matters.
