Some editions resell above retail, while others remain available for years at or below their original price. Buy one because the game and its physical extras are worth the premium to you—not because you expect a profit.
What a collector’s edition includes—and why it matters
A collector’s edition typically pairs a physical game release with items such as a figure, artbook, SteelBook, soundtrack, or other title-specific extras. A deluxe edition may instead add digital content. Check the exact contents before comparing prices: buyers may value physical objects differently, and resale depends on the specific edition, its condition and completeness, and demand for that title.
Do collector’s editions hold their value?
Resale outcomes vary by game and edition. In a 2026 guide, Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe reports that the original Elden Ring Collector’s Edition sold out before launch and was difficult to find at retail price afterward. The publisher also says the Little Nightmares II TV Edition launched at around $60 and was trading at $80–$90 fairly quickly. Those are selected publisher-reported examples, not typical returns: the figures do not establish what sellers actually netted after costs.
The same guide notes that many limited editions remain available on the secondary market at or below retail for years. Bandai Namco’s caution is apt: “Buying a collector’s edition video game as a financial investment is a gamble.” Limited supply alone does not guarantee sustained demand or a profitable sale.

No representative long-term return index or typical net resale return for collector’s editions is established by the sources here. Closo’s 2026 guide reports a $20 median sold price, a $10–$45 20th–80th percentile range, and 48 median days to sell for the broad category of video games and consoles. Its figures use a rolling 365-day sample updated nightly; they are not specific to collector’s editions and should not be used to price one. Closo’s useful methodological point is to look at sold listings and medians, rather than treating asking prices as evidence of value.
How to assess a specific edition before buying
- Match the exact release. Confirm the edition name, platform, region, and included items. Similar names can refer to packages with different contents or regional releases.
- Check completed sales. Look for sold copies of the same edition in the same region and comparable condition. Asking prices show what sellers hope to receive, not what buyers have paid.
- Compare completeness and condition. Note whether the box, game, inserts, figure, and other promised contents are present, and compare like with like. A complete, well-kept set is not directly comparable to a damaged or incomplete one.
- Consider demand as well as supply. A sellout or limited run may affect availability, but it does not establish that buyers will keep paying a premium. Interest in the game and its community also matter.
- Estimate what you could actually keep. Start with plausible sale proceeds, then account for marketplace fees, shipping, applicable taxes, packing, and storage. Also allow for a long wait—or the possibility that it does not sell. The available sources do not quantify typical costs or net returns.
- Set a personal-value test. Ask whether the physical extras are worth the price premium even if the edition never appreciates. Bandai Namco’s guidance is to buy for the items you value; if you are new to a series, consider playing the game first.
When buying one makes sense
A collector’s edition can be a satisfying purchase when you want its particular physical extras and can comfortably afford the premium. It is a riskier resale purchase if the case for buying depends on a future price increase, an assumed sellout, or an unsold listing that appears to show a high market value. Treat any later resale as uncertain upside rather than a planned return.
