That factory layer gives it a clearer identity than presentation alone can provide. But the game’s optional random-item purchases and dense progression systems make the decisive question less about whether it looks ambitious and more about whether its systems stay rewarding without making character acquisition feel like a toll. The available evidence supports a cautious verdict, not a claim that every player will find it style over substance.
What kind of game is Arknights: Endfield?
Endfield combines exploration, real-time squad combat and industrial construction. Hypergryph co-founder and director Light Zhong described the design as bringing “real-time squad combat, exploration, and large-scale industrial systems into a single, interconnected adventure.” He says up to four Operators fight together, with the player able to switch control between them. PlayStation Blog, January 16, 2026.
That combination matters to the review’s central question. The factory is not simply a decorative side activity: it supplies materials and supports crafting useful combat and team-progression items, according to PC Gamer’s January 2026 coverage. The strongest case for Endfield, then, is that its industrial layer changes what players do between fights and how exploration feeds progression.
Does the factory system give it substance?
Factory automation is the clearest distinguishing feature identified in the available independent coverage. Players mine and process resources, connect production, and use the results for items that help their teams. PC Gamer also reports that players can share factory blueprints, which can make other players’ layouts a practical starting point rather than requiring every production line to be designed from scratch.

GamesRadar’s April 2026 interviews likewise frame automation as a way to stand apart in a crowded category of open-world gacha RPGs. Hypergryph lead Ryan said some players spend “tens of hours” in factory systems. That is a developer’s description, not a measured player statistic, but it indicates the intended depth of the feature. Ryan also said the team plans different gameplay in future versions; that is a stated plan, not a guarantee about what a particular update will contain. GamesRadar+, April 2026.
The factory’s strength is also a possible source of friction. It adds another layer of materials, production and progression to a game already asking players to manage a squad and its development. PC Gamer notes that the game includes many currencies, XP bars and login notifications. That observation is a warning sign for clarity and focus, not proof that every player will find the systems confusing. Whether automation feels like meaningful planning or another set of chores depends on how clearly the game explains its loops and how satisfying the resulting upgrades feel.

Is the combat enough to carry the rest?
The combat is built around a team of up to four Operators and the ability to switch between them, according to Zhong’s description of the game. This gives the action a squad focus rather than treating the factory as the sole attraction. However, the sources available for this review do not establish how consistently engaging combat is over a full playthrough, how well encounters use switching, or whether the action remains satisfying as progression advances.
That distinction is important when judging “style over substance.” A striking presentation can make a first impression, but the substantive test is whether combat, exploration and production reinforce each other often enough to hold attention. The factory gives the game a concrete point of difference; the evidence here does not support a blanket verdict that its combat or broader systems fail to deliver.

Does the gacha make it pay to win?
The US PlayStation listing describes the PS5 game as free to play, with optional in-game purchases that include random items, and says online play is required. Those store terms are specific to the US listing and may differ by territory. PlayStation Store, US PS5 listing.
Free access and optional purchases do not by themselves settle whether a game is pay to win. The useful questions are whether players can experience its content without paying, whether character acquisition and progression are understandable, and whether spending changes the practical experience. The reviewed sources do not provide a complete current rates table or enough information to compare banner value numerically, so there is no reliable basis here for claims about pull totals, pity rules, carryover or the cost of securing a particular Operator.
Ryan told GamesRadar that the team monitors players’ teams and difficulties, calculates how many pulls players receive each version, and wants gacha not to affect their ability to enjoy gameplay. He said, “We have to ensure that players, including free players, are not paywalled by the system.” This is the developer’s stated objective, not independent evidence that the system is generous, transparent or free of pressure. A player deciding whether to spend should check the current in-game banner details and terms rather than relying on an interview statement as a guarantee.
What is the verdict on “style over substance”?
The title’s negative thesis is a question to test, not an established consensus. The factory and its links to crafting and progression provide a more substantial identity than a purely cosmetic flourish. At the same time, the reported abundance of currencies and progression bars, together with random-item purchases, gives players legitimate reasons to watch for complexity and acquisition pressure.

Endfield is most compelling on paper when its three strands work together: exploration supplies production, production supports the squad, and squad combat gives those upgrades a purpose. The available reporting makes the factory the clearest reason to try it; it does not establish that every part of the loop is equally strong or that gacha has no effect on the experience. Treat “gacha purgatory” as a verdict to reach from the live game’s current systems, not a fact proven by its store listing or developer promises.

Quick Recap
Who should try Arknights: Endfield?
- Try it if you want a squad action RPG whose factory automation meaningfully feeds crafting and team progression, rather than a game focused only on exploration and combat.
- Go in cautiously if you dislike managing multiple currencies and progression tracks, or if random-item character acquisition tends to make optional spending feel obligatory.
- Judge the gacha in the current client. The developer’s stated aim is to avoid paywalling free players, but the available sources do not establish the current rates or prove how that aim plays out.
