One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe arm.dll error usually means an Adobe installation or updater component is damaged, incomplete, or partially removed. arm.dll is associated with Adobe ARM, the update component used by older Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader installations.
It is not a standard Windows file, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or proof that your computer uses Windows on ARM. The safest repair is to identify the Adobe program named in the error, repair that installation, and reinstall it if repair does not work.
Which fix applies to you
Use the situation that matches your error:
- Acrobat or Reader opens: Run Adobe’s built-in repair option first.
- Acrobat or Reader will not open: Uninstall it, restart Windows, and install the current official Adobe package.
- The error appears after antivirus activity: Check quarantine and security history before restoring anything.
- The error names an old Adobe program: Remove the obsolete installation or legacy component, then install a supported Adobe version.
- The error says “specified module could not be found”: A dependency of
arm.dllmay be missing. Repair the complete Adobe installation instead of copying a replacement DLL. - Several unrelated applications fail: Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker.
- The path is not an Adobe folder: Treat the file as belonging to another application until its publisher and calling program are verified.
- The error appears after Adobe was removed: Look for a stale Adobe startup task rather than downloading
arm.dll.
What arm.dll is
The file is identified as:
| Property | Information |
|---|---|
| File name | arm.dll |
| Internal description | ARM |
| Associated component | Adobe ARM |
| Publisher | Adobe Systems, Incorporated |
| Category | Application component |
| Reported architecture | 32-bit |
| Reported file version | 3.0.1.254 |
| Reported size | About 2.48 MB |
The version and size above are reported metadata, not a guarantee that every Adobe installation should contain that exact build. Adobe’s current packages may use different components, and the exact parent application cannot be determined from the filename alone.
Adobe ARM is connected with Acrobat and Reader update operations, including scheduled tasks, registry settings, installation files, and updater logs. Older Adobe software using shared Adobe components may also refer to an ARM DLL.
#1 Best Overall
- Work securely offline — without connecting to the cloud — with desktop-only PDF tools.
- Edit text and images and reorder and delete pages in a PDF.
- Convert PDFs to Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files while preserving fonts, formatting, and layouts.
- Easily create, fill, and sign forms.
- Password-protect documents or redact sections of a PDF to keep sensitive information secure.
The name can be confusing. “ARM” in Adobe ARM is not the same as ARM64, the processor architecture used by some Windows computers. A 32-bit arm.dll filename does not indicate that Windows is running on an ARM processor.
Fix 1: Repair Acrobat or Reader
Repairing the parent Adobe installation is the best first step because it restores the matching files and dependencies together.
If Acrobat or Reader opens
- Start Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Open the Menu.
- Select Help.
- Choose Repair installation.
- Confirm the repair when prompted.
- Follow the instructions until the process finishes.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Acrobat or Reader again.
If the error was caused by a damaged or incomplete installation, the program should now open without the arm.dll message.
Afterward, check for updates:
- Open Acrobat or Reader.
- Select Menu > Help > Check for updates.
- Allow the updater to finish.
- Restart the application.
If the repair option is missing or the repair fails, continue with a complete uninstall and reinstall.

Use this method when Adobe will not start, repair does not complete, or the installation contains mixed old and new components.
Uninstall from Control Panel
- Save your work and close Acrobat, Reader, and other Adobe applications.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, select Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows even if the wizard does not require it.
If more than one Acrobat or Reader entry is present, note each one. Duplicate or obsolete Adobe installations can leave incompatible files and updater tasks behind.
Install Adobe again
Download Acrobat Reader or the relevant Acrobat product from Adobe’s official website rather than from a DLL repository. Choose the current package intended for your version of Windows.
Then:
- Open the downloaded Adobe installer.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Let the installer complete without interrupting it.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the newly installed application.
- Select Menu > Help > Check for updates.
A clean reinstall should restore the complete Adobe component set. It is more reliable than replacing only arm.dll, because the error may actually involve a missing dependency or a mismatched companion file.
If normal uninstall fails
Use Adobe’s official Cleaner Tool when the normal uninstaller leaves Acrobat or Reader partially installed.

Before using it:
- Close every Adobe process.
- Save documents and settings.
- Confirm which Adobe product you intend to remove.
- Restart after cleanup.
- Install Adobe again from its official installer.
Do not delete random Adobe folders from Program Files while processes or scheduled tasks are still active. Manual deletion can leave startup entries and registration data behind.
Fix 3: Check the full error path and calling program
The filename alone does not identify the correct repair. Read the complete path shown in the message, if one is displayed.
A legitimate Adobe-related location should be inside an Adobe installation directory or another clearly identified Adobe program folder. A file named arm.dll in an unrelated application directory may belong to a different product.

You can also inspect the Windows event record:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
eventvwr.msc
- Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the message appeared.
- Check the Faulting application name, faulting module, and file path.
Use that information to identify the parent executable. If the error names an old Adobe application rather than current Acrobat or Reader, repair or remove that specific application.
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean that arm.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies. Reinstalling the parent application is the correct way to restore the expected group of files.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an Adobe file during an update or installation. It can also block an updater without deleting the file.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the
arm.dllerror began. - Expand any Adobe-related detection and inspect its path and details.
Do not restore a quarantined file solely because its name is arm.dll. Restore it only when all of these conditions are clear:
- The path belongs to the expected Adobe installation.
- The file properties identify Adobe as the publisher.
- The detection is confirmed as a false positive.
- Adobe’s installation is otherwise legitimate.
If those conditions are not clear, leave the file quarantined, run a security scan, uninstall Adobe, and reinstall it from the official package. Reinstallation is safer than restoring an uncertain binary.
Third-party antivirus products have their own quarantine and detection-history screens. Check those records as well.

Fix 5: Remove stale Adobe startup entries
If you intentionally removed Adobe but the error appears every time Windows starts, a scheduled updater or startup entry may still be calling an old Adobe executable.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an Adobe updater or Adobe ARM entry.
- If Adobe is no longer installed, select the stale entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
taskschd.msc
- Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for Adobe tasks.
- Open a task’s Actions tab to see which executable it launches.
- Remove only tasks clearly left behind by an uninstalled Adobe product.
If the task points to an existing Adobe installation, do not delete it blindly. Repair or update that installation instead.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Legacy Adobe components may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. That is normal by itself. Problems occur when files from different Adobe products, architectures, or installation generations are mixed.
Check the application that produced the error:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Review System type.
- Open Installed apps and check whether multiple Adobe Acrobat or Reader versions are installed.
- Remove obsolete duplicates.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Adobe package intended for your system.
Do not copy a 32-bit arm.dll into a 64-bit Adobe directory, or a file from one Adobe version into another. Windows may report an invalid image, incompatible module, or missing dependency when the surrounding files do not match.
Adobe’s current unified Windows installer is 64-bit and can remove older packages in many situations. If you are moving from an older installation, use the current installer rather than trying to preserve individual legacy DLLs.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when Windows itself appears damaged, not as a normal source for replacing an Adobe DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse this step when:
- Several unrelated applications fail.
- Windows features are also malfunctioning.
- System files were damaged after a failed update or shutdown.
- Adobe still fails after a clean reinstall.
- Event Viewer shows broader Windows component errors.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
text
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
Do not close the window while DISM is working. The process may pause at a percentage for some time.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when it finishes, then test Acrobat or Reader again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run Windows Update, restart, and repeat DISM followed by SFC. If the Adobe error remains but other applications work normally, return to the Adobe uninstall and reinstall procedure.

Manually hunting through Windows folders, repeating repairs without knowing what changed, and comparing system files can make this step unnecessarily slow. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling Adobe remains the definitive fix for an Adobe-specific arm.dll problem.

Do not use Windows Features as a guess
Do not enable random entries in Turn Windows features on or off to fix arm.dll. The available evidence does not establish this file as a .NET, DirectX, or Visual C++ component.
Only change a Windows feature when the error explicitly identifies that feature or a Microsoft diagnostic directs you to do so. Installing unrelated runtimes can add more version conflicts without restoring Adobe’s matching files.
Fix 8: Consider drivers only when diagnostics point to them
A display or chipset driver is not a normal cause of an Adobe ARM DLL loading error. Do not begin by replacing drivers unless the same failure includes graphics crashes, device errors, or a driver name.
To inspect devices:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, System devices, and Storage controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Install a driver only from the computer, motherboard, or device manufacturer when an update is genuinely indicated.
If you have many devices and are tired of hunting through manufacturer pages or guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show its findings for free; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required for a normal Adobe repair.
After updating a relevant driver, restart Windows and test Adobe. If the arm.dll message is unchanged, stop pursuing drivers and return to repairing the Adobe installation.
What not to do
Do not download a random arm.dll
Unverified DLL packages can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or belong to a different Adobe build. Even a genuine file may not fix the missing dependency that caused the error.
The safe source is the official Adobe installer for the affected product. Obtain Windows repair files through Microsoft’s own repair process, not through a DLL repository.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
System32 and SysWOW64 are not general-purpose storage locations for application DLLs. Copying an Adobe file there can create version conflicts and will not repair the Adobe installation that expects the file in its own directory.

Do not run regsvr32 arm.dll as a routine fix
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A normal application or updater DLL may not expose those entry points.
Running:
regsvr32 arm.dll
does not restore a missing file, repair its dependencies, or reinstall Adobe. Use it only when the specific vendor documentation says that the DLL is a self-registering component and provides the correct path and registration procedure.

Do not install Visual C++ or DirectX without evidence
There is no established basis for treating arm.dll as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file. Install or repair those runtimes only if the error names a runtime or diagnostics identify a missing dependency.
If the error continues
Work through these checks:
- Confirm the exact executable named in the error.
- Confirm the full path of
arm.dll. - Remove duplicate or obsolete Adobe installations.
- Restart after uninstalling and before reinstalling.
- Check antivirus quarantine and exclusions.
- Review Adobe updater and installer logs.
- Test the Adobe application from another Windows user profile.
- Try a clean boot if another startup application may be interfering.
- Scan the system if the file is outside an Adobe directory or lacks a trusted Adobe publisher signature.
- Use System Restore only if the problem began after a known change and a clean Adobe installer is unavailable.
Adobe’s deployment documentation describes updater and installer logging locations. Those logs can show whether a file was blocked, whether an update stopped partway through, or whether a required dependency failed to install.

FAQ
Is arm.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Adobe ARM, an Adobe updater component. It should not normally be placed in a Windows system directory.
Is arm.dll part of Windows ARM64?
No. The filename does not identify the processor architecture of the computer. Adobe ARM and Windows on ARM are separate concepts.
Which Adobe products use arm.dll?
It is strongly associated with older Acrobat and Adobe Reader installations. Other older Adobe applications or shared Adobe components may also reference it. The error path and calling executable identify the actual parent program.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found?
Windows may be unable to load arm.dll itself, or it may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL. Reinstalling the complete Adobe product restores the expected file set.
Can I fix the problem by registering the DLL?
Usually not. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command and may fail when the file has no registration entry point.
Should I install Visual C++ redistributables?
Not unless the error or diagnostic specifically identifies a Visual C++ runtime. The available evidence does not identify arm.dll as a Visual C++ file.
What is the safest fix?
Repair Acrobat or Reader first. If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall it, restart Windows, and install the current official Adobe package. This addresses the damaged installation and its dependencies together.
