ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K6+: Compatibility and 2026 Buying Guide

The ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K6+ is still useful for tested sixth- or seventh-generation Intel systems, but its Z170 chipset, PCIe 3.0 limits and 64 GB memory ceiling make it a poor choice for most new 2026 builds.

The ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K6+ is a high-end 2015-era ATX motherboard for Intel sixth- and seventh-generation desktop processors. It remains useful for repairing or extending an existing LGA1151/DDR4 system, but it is a legacy platform rather than a sensible foundation for a new performance PC in 2026. Its strongest advantages are plentiful SATA connectivity, a PCIe 3.0 expansion layout, overclocking controls, diagnostic hardware and broad period connectivity. Its hard limits are the Z170 platform, PCIe 3.0, a listed 64 GB memory maximum and no support for eighth-generation Intel desktop CPUs.

ASRock identifies the exact model on its official product page. Do not confuse the K6+ with the closely named Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K6, K6/D3 or other LGA1151 boards; check the marking on the PCB and use the matching manual and support files.

Verified specifications

CPU compatibility: the socket label is not enough

The board is designed for Intel Skylake (sixth-generation) and Kaby Lake (seventh-generation) desktop CPUs. Compatible families include Core i7, i5 and i3, along with supported Pentium and Celeron models. K-series unlocked processors can use the board’s Z170 overclocking features, including Digi Power, a listed 12-phase design, voltage controls, BCLK adjustment and ASRock’s Hyper BCLK Engine.

LGA1151 is shared by multiple Intel generations, but they are not interchangeable. Eighth-generation Coffee Lake desktop processors do not work on this board; ASRock explicitly directs those CPUs to 300-series motherboards. Before buying a specific seventh-generation processor, check the exact CPU support list and required BIOS version on the K6+ support page. The available product information does not establish one minimum BIOS version for every supported CPU.

What overclocking support means

The hardware provides overclocking controls, not a guaranteed frequency. Results depend on the individual CPU, cooler, power supply, BIOS, memory configuration and the condition of a used motherboard. Treat BCLK and voltage features as enthusiast tools rather than a promise of a particular clock speed.

DDR4 memory support

Four DIMM slots provide dual-channel DDR4. ASRock lists 64 GB as the maximum capacity, DDR4-2133 as the standard speed and XMP 2.0 support. ECC UDIMMs can be installed, but they operate in non-ECC mode rather than providing workstation-style error correction.

The headline DDR4-3866+ figure is an overclocking setting with a major qualification: ASRock specifies it only with one memory module in single-channel mode. It is therefore not a normal target for a four-DIMM or dual-channel gaming system.

  • Prefer a matched two-DIMM kit for dual-channel operation.
  • Use the board’s memory support list for unusual densities or high-speed kits.
  • If diagnosing instability, start with XMP disabled, DDR4-2133 settings and one module in the manual’s recommended primary slot.
  • Modern DDR4 kits may not reach their printed XMP speed on this older memory controller.

PCIe slots and graphics

The expansion layout comprises three PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots. ASRock originally listed NVIDIA Quad SLI and AMD three-way CrossFireX support. Those are period specifications, not a reason to choose the board for a current multi-GPU system: modern games and drivers rarely benefit from such configurations, and the platform remains limited to PCIe 3.0.

A current graphics card can generally operate through PCIe backward compatibility, but the board cannot provide PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 bandwidth. The official specification contains no modern-card performance measurements, so do not assume parity with a current platform.

Integrated display outputs

DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort 1.2 outputs support triple-monitor configurations when paired with a processor that has usable integrated graphics. Listed limits are HDMI up to 4096×2160 at 24 Hz or 3840×2160 at 30 Hz, DVI-D up to 1920×1200 at 60 Hz and DisplayPort up to 4096×2304 at 60 Hz. The motherboard outputs are not independently powered if the CPU lacks integrated graphics.

Storage and M.2 lane sharing

Storage options are unusually broad for this generation: eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports, two SATA Express connectors and an Ultra M.2 socket supporting either SATA modules or PCIe Gen3 x4 modules up to 32 Gb/s. Intel Z170-connected SATA ports support RAID, and the manual documents support for an ASRock U.2 kit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The M.2 socket shares chipset lanes with SATA3_0, SATA3_1 and a SATA Express connection. Depending on the type of M.2 device installed, using one interface can disable another. Plan the port map from the manual instead of assuming all connectors remain active.

Storage choice What to verify
SATA M.2 SSD Shared SATA lanes may disable the affected SATA/SATA Express connectors.
PCIe/NVMe M.2 SSD It runs at PCIe Gen3 x4 limits, not modern Gen4 or Gen5 speeds; confirm UEFI visibility and boot behavior for the specific drive.
Multiple SATA drives Check which ports remain enabled after installing an M.2 device and configure RAID only on the intended chipset ports.

USB, networking and audio

Rear and internal connectivity includes four USB 3.1 Gen2 10 Gb/s ports—two Type-A and two Type-C—along with eight USB 3.1 Gen1 ports and a dedicated Fatal1ty Mouse Port. ASRock originally bundled a front USB 3.1 panel. A used listing may not include it, so verify the accessory, I/O shield, SATA cables and socket cover before paying a premium.

The Killer E2400 provides wired Ethernet, while the Realtek ALC1150 codec supplies 7.1-channel HD audio with Purity Sound 3 and DTS Connect. Killer branding does not guarantee faster or more reliable networking; drivers, the operating system, router and network conditions are more important in practice.

BIOS, controls and diagnostics

Two 128 Mb AMI UEFI chips provide a main and backup BIOS, with Secure Backup UEFI Technology. The board also has a Dr. Debug LED, onboard power and reset switches, voltage monitoring, smart fan control, two CPU-fan headers and four chassis-fan headers. Power connections are a 24-pin ATX connector and an 8-pin 12 V CPU connector.

Used-board inspection checklist

Because this is a legacy product, condition matters more than the original feature list. Before buying, request a photo of the PCB model marking and evidence that the board reaches POST.

  • Inspect the LGA1151 socket for bent pins, corrosion or liquid damage.
  • Confirm the 24-pin and 8-pin power connectors, I/O shield and desired accessories are present.
  • Ask whether all DIMM slots, SATA ports, PCIe slots, USB ports, video outputs, Ethernet, audio and fan headers have been tested.
  • Check the BIOS version against the CPU you intend to install.
  • Verify the CMOS battery is not dead and that settings remain saved.
  • Prefer a seller offering testing, returns and clear photographs over an untested listing.

Troubleshooting common problems

No POST after assembly

  1. Disconnect drives, USB devices and unnecessary expansion cards.
  2. Leave only the CPU, cooler, one memory module and a known-good graphics output.
  3. Confirm both the 24-pin motherboard and 8-pin CPU power connectors are attached.
  4. Test memory modules individually in the manual’s primary slot.
  5. Clear CMOS using the procedure in the manual.
  6. Read the Dr. Debug code, if displayed, and consult the manual for its meaning.
  7. Inspect the CPU socket for bent pins and test known-good power, memory and graphics hardware.

M.2 drive is missing

  • Identify whether the module is SATA M.2 or PCIe/NVMe.
  • Check the M.2/SATA Express lane-sharing table and move SATA cables if necessary.
  • Look for the drive in UEFI storage screens before troubleshooting the operating system.
  • Verify UEFI boot mode, partition format and any required storage-driver changes.

Memory instability

Disable XMP, return to DDR4-2133, use one module, confirm the recommended slot and test each stick separately. Then check the BIOS version and ASRock’s memory support list before attempting higher speeds or four-DIMM operation.

Ethernet or audio failure

Separate hardware faults from driver and operating-system problems. Install drivers only from a trustworthy source and test another cable, port or operating-system configuration before declaring the Killer or Realtek hardware defective.

Is it worth using in 2026?

Good reasons to reuse or buy one

  • You already own a sixth- or seventh-generation CPU and DDR4.
  • You need an ATX replacement with many SATA ports, expansion slots or onboard diagnostics.
  • You are building a period-correct Skylake/Kaby Lake gaming PC.
  • The board is tested, complete and substantially cheaper than a newer used platform.

Reasons to avoid it

  • You are starting a new gaming or workstation build.
  • You need current CPU performance, PCIe 4.0/5.0, modern USB, Wi-Fi or a longer upgrade path.
  • You need more than the officially listed 64 GB memory capacity.
  • You require guaranteed Windows 11-era support; CPU eligibility, TPM, firmware settings and installation policy must be checked separately.
  • The seller cannot demonstrate POST, or the price approaches a newer CPU, motherboard and memory bundle.

Choosing an alternative

For an existing sixth- or seventh-generation CPU, compare another tested Z170 or Z270 board, or a less expensive H170/B150 board if you do not need CPU overclocking. For a new build, select a current platform based on CPU generation, DDR4 or DDR5 cost, PCIe generation, M.2 lane allocation, USB-C, Wi-Fi, BIOS flashback, memory capacity and upgrade plans. Do not choose a “best” current replacement without checking today’s local pricing and availability.

Compare the complete cost of a used upgrade—motherboard, CPU, cooler, DDR4, storage, power supply, shipping and return protection—not just the board’s asking price.
