Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Fullscreen Problems: What to Try

Ubisoft’s suggested fix for Black Flag appearing on the wrong monitor is to change Windows’ primary display. Other fullscreen symptoms may need different troubleshooting.

If Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is opening on the wrong monitor, Ubisoft Support’s suggested workaround is to change which display Windows marks as primary. The game does not offer windowed or borderless-window modes, according to Ubisoft Support, so there is no in-game mode switch for moving it between screens. Other complaints described as “fullscreen not working”—such as a resolution or refresh-rate problem—may have different causes.

First identify what “fullscreen not working” means

These symptoms are not interchangeable. Before changing settings, identify which one you have:

  • The game appears on the wrong monitor, and you want it on another screen.
  • You want to leave fullscreen to use desktop apps or move the game to another monitor.
  • The game does not fill the display, or its resolution looks wrong.
  • The picture or frame rate behaves differently at particular refresh rates.

Ubisoft Support directly addressed the wrong-monitor situation. Its guidance does not establish one fix for every display or fullscreen complaint.

If the game opens on the wrong monitor

Ubisoft Support’s March 2023 response says the game has no windowed or borderless-window options. For moving it to another screen, support suggested changing the primary display in Windows display settings. The menu labels can vary by Windows version, but the relevant setting is the one that lets you select a display and make it the main display.

  1. Close the game.
  2. Open Windows Settings and go to System > Display.
  3. Select the monitor where you want the game to appear. If you are unsure which display is which, use the display-identification control shown on that page.
  4. Enable Make this my main display for that monitor, if Windows offers the option.
  5. Launch the game again and check which screen it uses. If needed, restore your usual primary display after playing.

This is Ubisoft’s suggested monitor-placement workaround, not a guaranteed fix for other display problems. In the same exchange, Ubisoft Support said it could not guarantee a resolution because there were no further updates planned at that time. That statement reflects the roadmap described in March 2023; it does not establish whether plans have changed since.

If you cannot leave fullscreen to reach other apps

The support reply does not provide a dedicated shortcut or setting for leaving fullscreen. It says the game has no windowed or borderless-window options, so changing Windows’ primary display is relevant when you want the game on another monitor—not a confirmed way to switch the game into a window or access desktop apps. If your goal is to move the game, use the primary-display steps above.

Resolution or general technical trouble

Ubisoft’s pinned PC Troubleshooting & Support post recommends working through its PC troubleshooting steps in order. The post includes general PC checks, clearing Ubisoft Connect and Steam caches, confirming the game uses a dedicated GPU, trying Windows compatibility mode on Windows 11, running an SFC scan, and checking the installation drive. These are general technical or performance checks; Ubisoft does not present them as a specific fullscreen fix.

If the issue continues, Ubisoft asks players to provide a detailed description of the problem, troubleshooting already attempted, PC specifications, and Windows version when seeking support.

Refresh-rate behavior

A separate March 2021 support thread concerns a frame-rate cap that changed with resolution. Ubisoft Support suggested checking refresh-rate values in the settings file and Vsync. The player later reported that changing the Windows monitor refresh rate while the game was open resolved that particular problem. This is one user’s report about refresh-rate behavior, not a verified fix for fullscreen mode or a guarantee that the same steps will work for another player. See the refresh-rate discussion for its context.

What the available guidance does—and does not—establish

  • Confirmed by Ubisoft Support: the game has no windowed or borderless-window options, and changing Windows’ primary display may move it to another monitor. Ubisoft’s monitor discussion
  • General advice, not a fullscreen remedy: Ubisoft’s pinned PC troubleshooting checklist covers broader technical problems. Ubisoft’s PC troubleshooting post
  • Anecdotal and issue-specific: one player reported a refresh-rate adjustment resolved a frame-rate cap problem. Refresh-rate thread

Steam’s technical-issue page for the game identifies the title and its publisher, but it does not establish a fullscreen fix.
