Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has romance mechanics, but not every encounter is framed as a lasting relationship. Ubisoft describes character quests and choices that can build a bond; GamesBeat reviewer Jeff Grubb interpreted many of the encounters he experienced as casual flings. The distinction matters: “hookups, not romance” is a critical reading of the game’s tone, not a description of an absence of romance options.
Does Assassin’s Creed Odyssey have romance options?
Yes. Ubisoft presents romantic partners as one of the player’s choices in Odyssey. Players choose Alexios or Kassandra, and Ubisoft says either protagonist follows the same storyline as the other. Its E3 preview says love in the game operates without regard to the protagonist’s gender. Ubisoft’s character-choice explanation and E3 preview describe these as design choices, not evidence that every possible relationship has the same outcome.
Creative director Jonathan Dumont explained the choice between the protagonists this way: “The DNA is old and imprecise, so it offers you the choice to pursue two characters.” He also said Alexios and Kassandra “come from a lost book of Herodotus – the first historian – who wrote about a hero that could be one of these two characters.” These are Ubisoft’s fictional framing for the protagonist choice, not claims of historical certainty.
How the relationship mechanics work
Ubisoft’s preview describes character-specific quests, gifts, and dialogue choices marked with a heart as ways to pursue a romance. Those interactions can open one-on-one quests and create a bond, with possible consequences when the characters part. That structure means some paths go beyond a single flirtation, even though the evidence does not establish that every romance develops into a long-term relationship.

Game director Scott Phillips said, “Choice was absolutely one of the first things we wanted in the game.” That describes a design goal: choices in quests can matter later, but it does not mean players freely determine every story outcome.
Why a reviewer called it “hookups, not romance”
In a 2018 GamesBeat review, Jeff Grubb argued that the game does not weigh its story down with the possibility of finding a soulmate and characterized encounters he experienced as flings. That is a reviewer’s judgment about the tone and presentation of many interactions—not an official Ubisoft label, a count of all romance options, or proof that the game has no relationship arcs.

The two descriptions can both be true: a particular encounter may feel casual, while the game also offers quest-based paths that build a bond. The distinction is between how an individual interaction comes across and what the broader mechanics allow.

Ubisoft’s early-game guide gives a small sample of potential partners, not a complete roster. It names Odessa, Auxesia, and Lykaon, as well as Kyra and Thaletas, whose stories involve quests before the romance choice. For Kyra and Thaletas, the guide says the player can romance only one of the two.

A 2024 peer-reviewed analysis by Root-Williams and coauthors describes many Odyssey NPCs as open to romantic and/or sexual relationships regardless of which protagonist the player chose. The authors caution that this openness does not establish that every such NPC has a fixed bisexual or pansexual identity. That is a scholarly interpretation of representation, rather than primary documentation of every quest outcome.

What the “hookups, not romance” claim does—and does not—mean
- It does mean: Grubb felt many encounters played as flings rather than soulmate stories.
- It does not mean: Ubisoft removed romance choices or that every path is a one-off encounter.
- It does not establish: the complete number of partners, how often encounters occur, or how every later downloadable story handles relationships.
