Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available, but the evidence here does not support calling this a hands-on preview: no independent play session or preview-build observations are documented. What can be assessed is the game’s stated design. Ubisoft presents Naoe as a stealth-and-mobility specialist and Yasuke as a combat-focused counterpart, with route planning and information gathering intended to shape how players approach objectives.
What this can—and cannot—tell you
A hands-on preview needs firsthand play. Ubisoft’s gameplay videos and descriptions explain intended mechanics, but they do not establish how reliably those mechanics work, how satisfying they feel over time, or whether the two protagonists are balanced. The sections below therefore distinguish Ubisoft’s descriptions from what remains unverified in play.
Ubisoft’s official game page currently lists Assassin’s Creed Shadows as available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Ubisoft+, Amazon Luna, Apple silicon Macs through the Mac App Store, and Windows PC through Ubisoft’s store, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Availability can vary by region and change; check the official game page for current details.
Two protagonists, two approaches
The game is set in late Sengoku Japan and follows Naoe, a shinobi from Iga, and Yasuke, a samurai based on the historical figure. Ubisoft describes their playstyles as complementary: Naoe relies on stealth, parkour, and gadgets, while Yasuke is armored and built for direct combat. The publisher says players can choose either character for quests; each has distinct progression, stats, skills, and gear. These are developer descriptions, not independent findings about how the options compare in practice. Ubisoft’s game page and its dual-protagonist overview provide the publisher’s framing.

Ubisoft says Yasuke’s established historical story is developed and expanded for the game. Treat the characters and plot as a fictionalized treatment rather than assuming the game’s portrayal is a historical account.
Naoe’s stealth depends on awareness and timing
Ubisoft describes stealth as a more deliberate system that removes the scouting eagle used in earlier games. Instead, players are meant to rely on their own senses and moment-to-moment decisions. The official stealth gameplay overview, published November 21, 2024, highlights light and shadow, hiding, distraction tools, and close-range assassinations. It also says that manually grabbing some enemies is necessary before an assassination, and that an attempt can damage rather than instantly kill a target depending on context and progression.
Those details suggest stealth is not simply a matter of following a marker to an unaware enemy. The practical questions—how consistently guards detect Naoe, how alerts spread, and how readily she can break contact—require direct play to answer. The overview establishes intended mechanics, not their reliability or feel.

Climbing requires route planning
The parkour overview says neither Naoe nor Yasuke can climb surfaces without physical handholds. A grapple hook expands access, but Ubisoft’s description makes clear that players still need to find valid routes and entry points; it does not describe every wall as climbable. Exploration is framed around gathering information
Ubisoft says exploration puts more emphasis on observation, conversations with non-player characters, and a spy network, rather than relying only on map markers and prompts. The publisher’s overview also names places and activities players may discover, including temples, castles, hidden parkour trails, and training grounds. Its exploration overview describes the intended information loop; it does not establish whether those clues consistently provide enough direction in play.

The design proposition is a trade-off: less explicit guidance can make discovery feel earned, but only if the information players find gives them a useful sense of where to investigate next. Whether Shadows strikes that balance remains unverified here.

Ubisoft’s pre-release Nijo Palace walkthrough illustrates the intended contrast: Naoe uses stealth and tools, while Yasuke confronts enemies more directly and brings a different weapon and armor setup. The walkthrough was authored by Ubisoft and published on the PlayStation Blog on March 6, 2025; it is an example of the publisher’s design, not independent hands-on evidence or proof of balance.

These options point toward a more direct combat role, but the available descriptions do not establish how attacks read in motion, how costly mistakes are, or how enemies respond. Those comparisons need to be observed during play, not inferred from a weapon list.
What a true hands-on comparison should establish
A useful firsthand comparison would follow the same objective with each character and record what changes. The most revealing points are:
- Detection and recovery: when enemies notice the player, how alerts spread, and whether cover offers a reliable way to escape pursuit.
- Route access: which surfaces have handholds, when the grapple works, and whether traversable routes are legible.
- Approach flexibility: whether an objective supports stealth and combat, and how much friction comes with changing tactics or characters.
- Combat risk and feedback: how clearly attacks telegraph, what happens after a mistake, and how equipment changes the encounter.
- Exploration guidance: whether spies, NPC encounters, and observation point toward useful next steps without removing the pleasure of discovery.
These are questions for play, not conclusions established by Ubisoft’s promotional material. Until firsthand observations are available, it is more accurate to describe Shadows as a game with two deliberately different stated approaches than to declare one protagonist better.
