Recommended YouTube Live bitrate by resolution and frame rate
Use the row matching the video your encoder sends to YouTube. These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in its 2026 guidance, accessed in 2026—not independent test results. The AV1/H.265 and H.264 figures differ, so bitrate is not a one-size-fits-all setting.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |

Choosing between 1080p and 4K
For 1080p at 60 fps, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. At 30 fps, its recommendations are 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Choose 60 fps when the source and encoder can deliver it reliably and motion smoothness matters; otherwise 30 fps can reduce the bitrate demand. A 4K stream needs substantially more upload capacity, and YouTube’s low-latency improvement option is unavailable at 2160p: 4K uses normal latency. If rapid audience interaction is important, account for that trade-off before selecting 4K.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Encoder settings YouTube recommends
YouTube’s current guide lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC, where those controls are available in your encoder.
- Audio: AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1. YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1.
- HDR: YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR; AV1 is not supported for HDR in the cited guide.
Encoder interfaces differ, so a setting may have a different label or may not be exposed. Follow the closest available control rather than assuming every encoder supports every option. See YouTube’s encoder settings guide for its current recommendations.

Set resolution automatically or manually
By default, YouTube detects resolution and frame rate. This is convenient when the encoder’s output can change or when you do not need to constrain the ingest format. If you need to specify those values in Live Control Room, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. The encoder’s output must match the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you intend to send.
In YouTube’s API documentation, automatic detection is represented by variable resolution and variable frame rate; the two values must be used together. That API detail is not a separate Astra preset. See YouTube LiveStreams API documentation.

Check your upload connection and test before going live
- Pick the output format first. Confirm the resolution, frame rate, and codec your encoder will actually send, then use the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation.
- Measure upload capacity. Run a speed test on the connection you will use to stream. Select a quality level the connection can sustain reliably; a headline speed result alone does not guarantee stable streaming.
- Configure the encoder. Set CBR, the matching recommended bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Set the audio format and rate, and use RTMPS when supported.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the actual program. YouTube’s instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch stream health. Check Live Control Room while the test is running and resolve warnings before the public stream. YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into output formats for different viewers, devices, and networks, but this does not remove the need for a stable encoder feed.
Diagnose common stream health warnings
Google’s Live Streaming API health documentation identifies configuration problems that may affect delivery. “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming,” it explains of ingestion starvation; viewers may experience buffering. Use the health message to investigate rather than assuming the service will correct an encoder problem.
| Symptom or health issue | What to check |
|---|---|
| Bitrate reported too high | Compare the encoder’s actual output with YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate. Lower the target if the connection cannot sustain it. |
| Bitrate reported too low | Check that the encoder is sending the intended bitrate and that it matches the selected output format. |
| Keyframe interval over 4 seconds | Set the encoder’s keyframe interval to YouTube’s recommended 2 seconds and verify the output. |
| Unsupported codec or resolution | Confirm that the encoder is using a codec and resolution listed in YouTube’s current guide, and that manual stream settings, if selected, match the encoder output. |
| Ingestion starvation or buffering | Check for an unstable or insufficient upload connection, then reduce the stream’s bitrate or quality to a level the connection can sustain. Test again with representative audio and motion. |

What “Astra” means for these settings
Topaz Labs Astra
Topaz Labs’ Astra quick-start describes a cloud video enhancement and rendering workflow: upload a video, choose a model, select output resolution and frame interpolation, render, then download the result. Its documentation says output can be up to 4K and frame interpolation can increase frame rate from 24 to 120 FPS depending on requirements. That describes rendered video, not a live YouTube encoder configuration. If you render with Topaz Labs Astra and then stream the resulting file, choose YouTube settings based on the file and encoder output—not on the name Astra. See Topaz Labs Astra quick-start.
Cesbo Astra
Cesbo Astra is described as software for processing streams and channels: a media flow can receive content from sources, process it, and deliver it to clients, with configurable inputs and optional outputs. Its overview does not establish YouTube Live bitrate presets. If Cesbo Astra is part of your delivery chain, treat its role separately from YouTube’s ingest recommendations and verify what format and bitrate it outputs. See Cesbo Astra overview.

Keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without a home encoder
If your goal is to loop uploaded video continuously on YouTube rather than broadcast a live camera or game capture, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your video or prepare a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and start the stream.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- Each slot streams the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
- The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
