Connect an encoder to YouTube
Whether you choose an app or desktop encoder, YouTube’s documented workflow is to create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio, then provide the encoder with the server URL and stream key. The encoder sends the feed to YouTube. Treat the stream key as a credential: use the intended key for the stream and do not share it publicly.
- Prepare the live stream in YouTube Studio. Create or select the live stream you intend to use, following YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Copy the connection details. Get the server URL and stream key shown for that stream in YouTube Studio.
- Enter them in your encoder. Add the server URL and key in the app or desktop software’s YouTube/RTMP connection settings.
- Start the feed and verify it in YouTube Studio. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream before leaving the setup unattended.
See YouTube Help’s encoder setup guide for the platform workflow. YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” If you need a recording of a 24-hour broadcast, do not assume that one continuous stream will produce one complete archive; plan for your own recording or suitable stream segmentation.

A computer-free hardware option
YouTube’s encoder directory describes the AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream feature as able to schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Using prerecorded media does not remove the need to have the rights to stream it. Make sure you have permission for the video, music and other material in your playlist, and check YouTube’s applicable policies before broadcasting. A live stream’s technical continuity and a channel’s eligibility or monetization are separate matters; neither Astra nor OBS can guarantee policy compliance or channel outcomes.

- YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck that the encoder has the server URL and stream key for the intended live stream, then confirm the stream is started in the encoder and visible in YouTube Studio.
