Its appeal is specific, though. It leaks sound, offers no wireless convenience, and needs the right platform-specific MixAmp for full console functionality. In 2026, it makes sense mainly for players who want those wired controls in a quiet room—and who can verify the exact bundle and software setup before buying.
What the 2019 bundle is—and what changed
This review covers the wired, open-back Astro A40 TR headset bundled with the desktop MixAmp Pro TR. Listings may call it the 2019 release or Gen 4, while Logitech support materials are not consistent about generation labels. Identify a unit by its 2019 release, MixAmp model label and PlayStation or Xbox variant rather than relying on “Gen 3” or “Gen 4” in a listing.
The 2019 revision was evolutionary, not a wholesale headset redesign. The headset remained broadly similar to the previous A40 in comfort and construction; the MixAmp received the more visible refresh. Available comparisons do not establish a dramatic change in the headset’s internal audio hardware, so a working 2017 A40 owner has little reason to replace the headset solely for a major sound improvement. The updated mixer may matter if its controls or connections solve a specific setup need. RTINGS’ review describes the product and its performance.
Sound quality for games and everyday listening
Independent testing describes the A40’s sound as generally warm, with controlled bass, accurate midrange, very low harmonic distortion and well-matched left and right drivers. Treble is less consistent: dips in the response can make some voices seem muffled, while certain sibilants may stand out by contrast. Logitech lists open 40 mm dynamic drivers, 48-ohm nominal impedance and a 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency response; those specifications describe the design, not proof of sound quality. Logitech’s specification page provides the figures.

Games, music and films
For games, the headset offers clear positional cues and a spacious presentation, while the wired connection avoids the need to manage a headset battery. Its warm balance suits many single-player games and cinematic soundtracks. For competitive play, the imaging is useful, but there is no single EQ profile that is best for every title. Music and films are enjoyable, though listeners seeking a neutral, reference-style tuning may prefer a different headphone.
Stereo and Dolby processing
The MixAmp offers Dolby audio processing and four customizable EQ modes, alongside physical game/voice balancing. Dolby’s MixAmp description lists these features. Dolby is an option, not an automatic improvement: virtual surround may make a game sound wider, but it can also change tonal balance or imaging. Compare stereo and Dolby in the same game, and avoid stacking multiple spatial-processing modes unless you have tested that combination.
Microphone performance
The microphone is one of the bundle’s strengths for party chat and streaming. RTINGS found its recording performance strong, while Logitech specifies a 6 mm unidirectional microphone with a noise gate. The boom is detachable, and flipping it up mutes the microphone. That noise gate is not the same thing as software noise suppression: it can help limit unwanted sound when you are not speaking, but it does not guarantee a clean voice track in a noisy room. Placement, room noise and the settings in your chat or recording app still matter. The open-back design also lets environmental sound reach you, so this is very good gaming-chat equipment rather than a substitute for a controlled recording space.
Comfort, construction and the open-back trade-off
The over-ear headset is regarded as comfortable and sturdy for extended play. Logitech lists its weight at about 369 g without the cable. Cloth cushions can feel less heat-trapping than sealed leatherette pads, and the open construction gives the presentation an airy quality. Actual comfort depends on head shape, glasses and tolerance for clamp pressure; glasses wearers should check for pressure at the temples during a longer trial if possible.

- Up to 15m wireless range: Removing the boundaries of wires, the 2.4 GHz wireless signal provides a range of up to 15m
- Cross-platform connectivity: With our new USB transmitter, you can easily connect cross-platform between console and PC; separately sold console-specific USB transmitters allow for cross-console compatibility using the same headset
- 15+ hours battery life: Enjoy anxiety-free marathon gaming sessions with more than 15 hours of battery life; recharge the headset using the included USB-C to USB-A cable
- Flip-to-mute microphone: Be in charge of your full audio experience with the flip-to-mute uni-directional microphone which delivers clear and accurate communication with easy mute functionality
- EQ presets: Choose between 3 different audio presets to make sure you have the best equalizer settings for the game you’re playing
The open-back design is also the most important reason not to buy the A40. It provides almost no isolation: room noise remains audible, and people nearby can hear your game. That can mask quiet audio and disturb anyone sharing the room. RTINGS likewise describes isolation as poor by design. Choose a closed-back headset if you play near a sleeping partner, in an office or library, or in a noisy home. RTINGS’ measurements and assessment cover leakage and isolation.
The headset’s modular parts—including its microphone, speaker tags, cushions and cables—can make repair or personalization easier, but condition matters on an older unit. Inspect sliders, hinges, cable connections and cushions rather than assuming that a used headset is durable simply because its frame feels solid.
What the MixAmp adds
The MixAmp is the main reason to choose the bundle over the A40 headset alone. It provides a large master-volume control, game/chat balance, EQ selection, Dolby processing, USB and optical connections, an auxiliary input, a stream output and digital daisy-chain connections for compatible setups. A physical game/chat dial is quicker to reach than a console menu, and the stream output can help with audio routing. On a desktop, the unit also serves as a convenient volume control.
That value is lower if you only need basic headphone audio from a controller or already own a suitable DAC, controller or audio interface. The MixAmp adds a desktop box, cables, setup work and another component that can fail. Its particular routing and console features also depend on the platform edition and connection method; “compatible” does not necessarily mean every feature is available in every setup.

Platform compatibility: choose the right MixAmp
The headset itself is wired and can be connected to other suitable audio outputs, but the MixAmp versions are not interchangeable for every console function. Logitech’s specifications identify the PlayStation version for PC, Mac and PS4, and the Xbox version for PC, Mac and Xbox One. Logitech product information also describes the Xbox edition’s compatibility with Xbox Series X|S. For PS5, Logitech points to an HDMI adapter/audio solution for the relevant bundle. Confirm the exact model and connection path before buying, especially used.
| Platform | Best starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PC or Mac | Either MixAmp edition, depending on your console needs | USB connection, PC mode, operating-system support and separate game/chat device routing in your apps. |
| PS4 | PlayStation MixAmp | Optical and USB routing for the setup you want; Logitech lists the PS edition as compatible with PS4. |
| PS5 | PlayStation MixAmp | Whether your setup needs an HDMI audio extractor/adapter, and which audio, microphone, game/chat, EQ and processing features remain available with that connection. Logitech describes an adapter solution; the exact result depends on wiring and firmware. |
| Xbox One or Series X|S | Xbox MixAmp | Exact hardware revision, Xbox compatibility and firmware. Do not assume a PlayStation edition provides full Xbox voice and mixer functionality. |
| Multiple consoles | Usually not an ideal one-box solution | Whether you need a different MixAmp edition or adapters, and whether each connection preserves game audio, microphone input, chat mixing and processing. |
The table is a buying guide, not a promise that every feature works identically on every console. Optical, USB-only and HDMI-extractor paths can behave differently. Check the official specification for your exact edition: PlayStation model and Xbox model. On PS5, Logitech’s product information discusses the relevant adapter approach: A40 TR + MixAmp Pro TR bundle.
PC setup and common fixes
For configuration on a computer, Logitech’s software guidance calls for USB connection, PC mode and Astro Command Center. Windows and individual apps may use different device labels, so identify the MixAmp’s game and voice endpoints rather than expecting a particular menu name. Logitech’s Astro software page lists the 2019 MixAmp release.
- Connect the MixAmp to the computer with a USB data cable and switch it to PC mode.
- Connect the A40 headset to the MixAmp’s front headset port.
- In Windows sound settings, select the MixAmp game output for game audio.
- In Discord or another chat app, select the MixAmp voice device for input and output where separate devices are supported.
- Open Astro Command Center to configure available EQ, microphone and sidetone settings.
- Test game audio, microphone recording and game/chat balance separately before a session.
If the MixAmp is not detected
- Confirm PC mode, then disconnect and reconnect USB.
- Try another USB port and a known-good data cable; some cables provide power only.
- Close and reopen Astro Command Center, then restart the computer if needed.
- Check that Windows has not routed sound to a monitor, motherboard device or controller instead.
- Confirm the exact MixAmp model is supported before attempting firmware work.
If game/chat balance or the microphone fails
- For game/chat balance, make sure game audio and voice chat use the appropriate separate MixAmp channels; check console or app routing, the console edition and optical/USB/HDMI wiring.
- For microphone audio, reseat the headset cable and boom, check the flip-to-mute position, select the correct input device and review console privacy settings.
- If the sound becomes hollow or strange in Dolby mode, compare stereo and Dolby using the same game; this may be a processing preference rather than a fault.
Astro Command Center and ownership in 2026
Logitech continues to list Astro Command Center for the MixAmp Pro TR 2019 release. The software page identifies supported operating systems and the device, while Logitech’s listings do not make this product’s configuration workflow the same as that of newer Logitech G devices. Do not assume that G Hub replaces Astro Command Center for this MixAmp. Software detection and firmware setup are meaningful ownership considerations for older hardware, especially if you rely on custom EQ or settings.

Is it worth buying in 2026?
There is no verified current official US price for this older bundle here, so judge a listing by its condition and what is included rather than by its original flagship positioning. The bundle is worth considering at a sensible used or discounted price if you specifically want open-back wired sound and physical game/chat controls. At an inflated price, or when you want uncomplicated modern convenience, it is a poor-value choice.
Buy it if
- Your gaming room is quiet and private.
- You prefer a wired connection and do not want to manage headset batteries.
- You value a strong gaming-chat microphone, physical game/chat balancing and configurable EQ.
- You will use the MixAmp’s desktop, optical or streaming controls rather than paying for features you do not need.
Skip it if
- You need wireless freedom, Bluetooth integration or easy switching among consoles and mobile devices.
- You need sound isolation or do not want audio leaking into a shared room.
- You want a simple plug-and-play setup with minimal software or cable management.
- You expect current flagship performance and broad cross-platform functionality from an older wired bundle.
Consider a different type of headset
For buyers prioritizing wireless convenience and isolation, the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro is a closed-back wireless alternative with 2.4 GHz audio and a detachable microphone. Razer lists up to 70 hours of battery life on PC and up to 48 hours on PlayStation/Xbox; those are manufacturer figures, not a guarantee for every usage pattern. Its US product page showed US$129.99 against a US$199.99 original price when the cited information was captured, but pricing and promotions can change. Razer BlackShark V2 Pro is a better fit for convenience, not for someone who specifically wants the A40’s open-back character and optical desktop mixer.
Newer Logitech/Astro wireless headsets may suit buyers who want to stay in that ecosystem and use a more current wireless platform, though software and features vary by model. Logitech G’s headset category is the appropriate place to compare current models; this review does not establish exact current prices or availability.
Used-buying checklist
Before paying for a used 2019 bundle, test the complete signal path. A low price is not a bargain if the mixer, cables or microphone are defective.
Quick Recap
- Confirm that the MixAmp is the correct PlayStation or Xbox edition and check its model label.
- Check that the MixAmp powers on, connects over USB and is detected by Astro Command Center.
- Test the game/chat control, master volume wheel, EQ selection and microphone mute.
- Listen for crackling or dropouts while moving the cable and checking the USB port.
- Inspect the headset cable, microphone boom, sliders, hinges and ear cushions.
- Confirm that the needed USB and optical cables are included; for a PS5 setup, establish the adapter or extractor solution before buying.
- Ask which firmware is installed and avoid a purchase whose seller cannot demonstrate basic operation.
