Yes—Astro Bot includes AIBO-inspired VIP Bots that can perform a pet-like interaction at the Crash Site. The cameo is an in-game tribute to Sony’s robotic-dog history, not a connection to a physical AIBO. Community-maintained bot documentation identifies two versions: Pup Pal, associated with the older ERS-111, and Pup Pal+, associated with the modern ERS-1000.
Spoiler warning: identifying these optional VIP Bots and describing their interaction reveals a minor collectible cameo.
How AIBO appears in Astro Bot
Astro Bot is Team ASOBI’s single-player 3D platformer for PlayStation 5, released on September 6, 2024. Its more than 300 rescuable Bots include VIP characters based on PlayStation history and other Sony properties. The official game page explains that rescued VIP Bots can be reunited with unique items from the Gatcha Lab to trigger special actions: PlayStation’s official Astro Bot page.

The names and model associations come from player-maintained documentation rather than an official Sony character list. The relevant community list is available on Reddit, so the mapping should be treated as a well-documented fan identification.
How to trigger the interaction
The AIBO scene follows Astro Bot’s general VIP-Bot progression rather than appearing as a free-roaming activity in a level.

- Rescue the relevant VIP Bot. You must first find its Bot in the game’s normal collectible content.
- Return to the Crash Site. Rescued Bots gather in this central social area.
- Use the Gatcha Lab. Spend coins to obtain character-specific items.
- Give the matching item to the Bot. The correct item unlocks that VIP’s special action.
- Watch the resulting scene. The AIBO-inspired Bot and Astro share a brief, pet-like interaction.
PlayStation confirms the rescue-and-item system, but it does not publish an AIBO-specific button prompt, item name, level location or coin cost on the linked product page. Do not assume the cameo is available immediately, that it can be summoned anywhere, or that Astro can repeatedly pet it on demand without the required rescue and item progression.

ERS-111: the retro reference
The ERS-111 belongs to AIBO’s early product era. In Astro Bot, the Pup Pal design functions as the older-looking counterpart, making the cameo recognizable to fans of Sony’s first-generation robotic pets.

ERS-1000: the modern reference
Sony announced the ERS-1000 on November 1, 2017, with a Japanese release listed for January 11, 2018. Sony’s announcement describes touch sensors, cameras, microphones and 22 movable axes, along with cloud-connected behavior: Sony’s ERS-1000 announcement. Pup Pal+ is the community-documented Astro Bot counterpart to this newer design.
The game therefore contrasts two generations of Sony’s robotic-dog identity instead of presenting one generic dog Bot. Neither is a full playable character; both are collectible VIP cameos.

What “petting” means in the game
In this context, “petting” describes the animation or interaction scene at the Crash Site. It does not mean that Astro Bot turns the AIBO cameo into a virtual pet simulator, nor does it establish a general petting control for every dog-shaped Bot.
The real AIBO also responds to touch. Sony says its robot can detect petting and head or back scratches, and the current US AIBO site describes an autonomous companion with toys, tricks and its own app-and-service ecosystem: Sony’s US AIBO site. That shared touch-and-companion idea makes the joke legible, but the game’s animation remains entirely fictional.

Is it compatible with a physical AIBO?
No. There is no evidence that a PS5 can pair with AIBO through Astro Bot, transmit commands to the robot, or use the robot as a controller. The cameo is a stylized Sony reference built into the game’s collectible system. You do not need to own an AIBO to unlock or view it, and buying a physical AIBO will not add features to the game.
Where can you play it?
Astro Bot is officially a PlayStation 5 exclusive. The cameo is not available through the free preinstalled Astro’s Playroom, and there is no official PS4 or PC version listed on the game page. A PlayStation Portal can stream a PS5 game remotely, but it is not a separate platform release.
The game has received post-launch content, including additional Special Bots. If you are following an older guide, check that its Bot names and unlock instructions match your current game version; the official page establishes the general VIP and Gatcha Lab system, not a permanent universal unlock path for every cameo.

Astro Bot celebrates PlayStation’s hardware and software history through small, readable character jokes. AIBO is an especially natural fit: both AIBO and Astro present Sony-designed robots as expressive companions, and both rely on animation and physical response to make a machine feel friendly. Calling the cameo a tribute to Sony’s robotics history is an interpretation rather than a published developer statement, but the two-generation design pairing makes that reading clear.
For most players, the reward is the short Crash Site scene and the recognition of the reference—not access to a hidden AIBO feature. The virtual cameo costs only the game’s normal rescue and Gatcha progression; a real AIBO is a separate product with its own hardware, software, app and service requirements.
