ASUS announced the ROG Strix XG27UCG and ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG on May 20, 2024, but they are not direct alternatives. The XG27UCG is a 4K Fast IPS monitor that can switch between 4K at 160Hz and 1080p at 320Hz. The XG27AQDMG is a glossy 1440p WOLED display running at 240Hz, designed for superior contrast and cinematic image quality.
Choose the XG27UCG for versatility, 4K sharpness, bright-room use, and static productivity. Choose the XG27AQDMG for OLED blacks, glossy presentation, and fast 1440p gaming—provided you can manage reflections and OLED-specific image-retention risks.
What ASUS announced
ASUS grouped the two monitors in one ROG announcement because both target high-performance PC gaming, but they approach it differently:

- ROG Strix XG27UCG: a 27-inch Fast IPS LCD with 3840×2160 resolution at 160Hz, plus a dual mode that switches to 1920×1080 at 320Hz.
- ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG: a 26.5-inch-viewable glossy WOLED monitor with 2560×1440 resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate.
ASUS described the XG27UCG as the world’s first dual-mode LCD gaming monitor and the XG27AQDMG as the world’s first glossy WOLED gaming monitor. Those are ASUS’s launch-era claims, rather than independently established industry-wide classifications. The same announcement also covered a firmware update for the older ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM, adding OLED Anti-Flicker functionality; that update is separate from these two monitor launches.

The OLED XG27AQDMG was announced for US availability from May 30, 2024, with a $699 US launch MSRP. That is its original MSRP, not a verified current selling price.

Specifications and response-time figures are manufacturer claims. The 1ms and 0.03ms numbers should not be treated as guaranteed input-lag rankings or as substitutes for independent measurements.
How the XG27UCG’s dual mode works
The XG27UCG’s main attraction is that one physical monitor can serve two very different gaming setups.

4K at 160Hz
In its normal mode, the monitor runs at 3840×2160 and up to 160Hz. This mode suits visually demanding single-player games, strategy titles, desktop work, video, and any game where fine detail is more important than the highest possible frame rate.
Driving modern games at 4K and high refresh rates requires a powerful graphics card. Actual performance depends on the GPU, game engine, graphics settings, upscaling, ray tracing, and whether the game can produce enough frames to use the refresh rate.

1080p at 320Hz
For competitive shooters and esports games, the monitor can switch to 1920×1080 at 320Hz. This lowers the rendering workload and gives compatible games a much higher refresh ceiling.
However, 320Hz does not mean 4K at 320Hz. The panel remains a 4K display, and 1080p is scaled to fit it. As a result, this mode is not visually equivalent to a native 1080p 320Hz esports monitor. It is best understood as a flexible compromise: high-refresh competitive play without buying a second screen.
The mode is selected through the monitor’s controls or supported hotkey features. The available signal range depends on the input, cable, GPU output, and connection configuration. ASUS lists DisplayPort, USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, and HDMI support for the relevant modes, but buyers should check the technical specifications for their exact setup.
Connectivity and everyday use
ASUS lists DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, with 15W USB-C power delivery. That makes the XG27UCG especially useful for a laptop-and-desktop setup, although 15W is not high-power laptop charging and should not be confused with a complete USB-C dock.
Other listed specifications include 350 cd/m² typical brightness, 400 cd/m² HDR peak brightness, 130% sRGB and 95% DCI-P3 coverage, a 1000:1 typical contrast ratio, a 100×100mm VESA mount, and up to 120mm of height adjustment. ASUS also lists AMD FreeSync Premium, G-SYNC Compatibility, and VESA AdaptiveSync Display certifications at the applicable refresh rates.

What makes the XG27AQDMG different?
The XG27AQDMG is built around a glossy WOLED panel rather than an LCD backlight. Because OLED pixels emit their own light, they can turn off individually for very dark blacks without the backlight glow associated with many LCD monitors.
Why choose the OLED
- Higher perceived contrast: dark scenes and games with shadows can look more convincing than on a conventional IPS display.
- Fast motion: ASUS claims a 0.03ms GTG response time, while the 240Hz refresh rate is well suited to fast games.
- Glossy presentation: in controlled lighting, the glossy surface can make colors and contrast appear vivid.
- Lower rendering demand than 4K: 1440p is easier to drive than 4K, although reaching 240 frames per second still requires capable hardware and a suitable game.
ASUS advertises third-generation WOLED technology and a Clear Pixel Edge Algorithm intended to improve text clarity. That is an ASUS feature claim; the practical result can vary with operating-system scaling, viewing distance, content, and the panel’s subpixel arrangement.
OLED trade-offs
The glossy coating reflects windows, lamps, and room lighting more readily than the XG27UCG’s anti-glare surface. A controlled gaming room can showcase the panel, while a bright office with a window behind the viewer may make reflections distracting.
OLED also carries a long-term image-retention and burn-in consideration. Static taskbars, browser interfaces, spreadsheets, and productivity applications can place more stress on the panel than varied gaming content. ASUS includes OLED Care features, a custom heatsink, OLED Anti-Flicker controls, and compensation-related protections intended to mitigate OLED-specific risks. These features do not make burn-in impossible or guarantee a particular lifespan.
Long-term results depend on usage patterns, brightness, static content, compensation cycles, temperature, and individual panel behavior. Check the warranty terms for your country and exact SKU rather than assuming that burn-in is covered everywhere. ASUS lists a three-year warranty on its US product page, but regional conditions may differ.

Similarly, brightness claims need context. ASUS’s claim that the display is brighter than an earlier ROG OLED model is tied to a defined comparison using a 100% white window in SDR mode. It should not be interpreted as a promise that every game scene or HDR image will be 20% brighter.

Choose the XG27UCG if you:
- Want 4K sharpness for games, text, and general computing.
- Play both cinematic single-player games and competitive shooters.
- Want one monitor instead of separate high-resolution and esports displays.
- Prefer to avoid OLED burn-in management.
- Work with static windows for long periods.
- Use a laptop and can benefit from USB-C DisplayPort input.
- Play in a bright or mixed-lighting room.
- Need HDMI 2.1 for a console or multi-device setup.
Choose the XG27AQDMG if you:
- Prioritize OLED black levels and contrast over 4K resolution.
- Mostly play at 1440p and want a 240Hz target.
- Want a glossy display and can control room reflections.
- Value cinematic presentation in dark games and movies.
- Accept OLED Care routines and the possibility of image retention or burn-in.
Consider neither if you:
- Need a high-power USB-C dock, Ethernet, or a large integrated USB hub.
- Want a 32-inch, ultrawide, or larger-format display.
- Need native 1080p esports clarity rather than scaled 1080p on a 4K panel.
- Primarily perform static office work and do not want OLED maintenance.
- Need a console setup centered on HDMI 2.1 features without checking the console’s supported output modes.

Prices and newer ASUS models in 2026
The original monitors launched in 2024, so current buyers should separate launch pricing from present-day availability.
The XG27AQDMG launched in the United States at $699, but that figure should not be used as its current price. A current US price was not verified from the official ASUS page used for this comparison.
As of August 16, 2026, ASUS’s US store showed the original XG27UCG at $449. Prices, stock, promotions, color variants, and retailer availability can change, so treat that as a dated price observation rather than a permanent MSRP.

Bottom line
The ROG Strix XG27UCG is the more versatile monitor. Its 4K/160Hz mode suits high-detail gaming and productivity, while its 1080p/320Hz mode gives competitive players a high-refresh option without adding a second display. It is also the safer choice for bright rooms and static desktop use.
The ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG is the more specialized choice. Its glossy WOLED panel, deep blacks, and 1440p/240Hz performance are compelling for gamers who value contrast and fast motion more than 4K workspace. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends on whether your priority is flexible resolution and everyday practicality or OLED contrast and 240Hz gaming.
