ASUS’s March 31, 2025 teaser signaled an Xbox collaboration, but it did not reveal a finished Microsoft console. The project ultimately became two ASUS-built Windows 11 handheld PCs—the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X—with Xbox software integration, announced on June 8, 2025 and released on October 16, 2025.
What ASUS actually teased on March 31, 2025
The original post was a short social-media teaser, not a complete hardware announcement. It did not provide a product name, price, specifications, release date, battery information, or country-by-country availability.
Contemporary coverage reported ASUS ROG imagery alongside clues involving Omni, an ROG Ally and the Kairi Pro Controller. That report also described meme-style reactions from Microsoft’s official account. Those details should be understood as the period’s interpretation of the post, rather than a full technical disclosure. The original report is available here.

The safest conclusion from the clip was simply that ASUS and Xbox were preparing a handheld-related collaboration. Calling it a “portable Xbox” was understandable shorthand, but the teaser did not establish that Microsoft had built a conventional Xbox console.

Project Kennan was a reported codename, not the retail name
During the teaser period, reports associated the collaboration with the internal or development name Project Kennan. No public specification sheet or final branding accompanied that reporting, so details about the hardware remained unconfirmed.
Project Kennan was not the name used at retail. Xbox and ASUS ultimately announced the products as the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. Xbox’s June 8 reveal replaced the codename-and-rumor phase with official product information.
When Xbox and ASUS officially revealed the handhelds
At the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8, 2025, the companies presented two models. Xbox described them as a collaboration combining its software ecosystem and handheld-focused work with ASUS ROG hardware. Both run Windows 11, rather than the operating system used by Xbox Series consoles.

ASUS and Xbox later announced an October 16, 2025 on-shelf date. Preorders opened on September 25 in 38 countries, with regional pricing supplied as orders became available. The launch-date announcement is documented by Xbox and ASUS.
ROG Xbox Ally versus ROG Xbox Ally X
The two launch models target different budgets and performance expectations. Exact configurations can vary by market, and ASUS uses both “Ryzen Z2 Extreme” and “Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme” wording across product materials, so buyers should check the specification page for their region.

What makes these handheld PCs “Xbox” products?
The Xbox contribution is primarily the software experience and ecosystem integration. Xbox says the devices can boot directly into an Xbox-oriented handheld mode designed to make controller navigation easier on a small screen.
- An Xbox button, View and Menu buttons, and a Library button provide familiar navigation.
- The Xbox app brings together compatible installed PC games and Xbox services.
- Compatibility indicators help identify games intended to work well on a handheld, though they are guidance rather than a guarantee of flawless play.
- Windows 11 remains underneath the Xbox-focused interface, allowing other PC launchers, desktop applications and Windows settings.
- Game Pass, cloud gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere can extend the available library when the title, subscription and region support them.
Xbox’s product page currently advertises three months of Game Pass Premium with the handhelds, described there as nearly a $45 value at the time of listing. The subscription continues at its regular monthly price unless canceled, and eligibility and plan terms can change. Check Xbox’s current offer before buying.
What the teaser did not prove
- It did not confirm a final product name, price or release date.
- It did not provide complete specifications, battery capacity or performance results.
- It did not establish whether the device was a console or a Windows handheld PC.
- It did not promise local access to every Xbox console game or full Xbox backward compatibility.
- It did not confirm availability in any particular country.
That distinction matters. The finished products run compatible PC versions, Xbox services and cloud sessions; they are not universal local Xbox-console emulators. An Xbox console owner should not assume that every game in their console library installs and runs locally on an Ally.

How the final product differs from the “portable Xbox” rumor
What is accurate
- Microsoft and Xbox worked with ASUS on the handhelds.
- The devices carry Xbox branding and provide an Xbox-oriented interface.
- They support Windows PC gaming alongside Xbox services.
What is inaccurate
- Microsoft did not launch these as a separately manufactured first-party Xbox console.
- The Xbox console operating system is not replacing Windows 11.
- “Runs every Xbox game” is not a supported description.
- Project Kennan was not the public retail brand.
It is therefore incomplete to call the hardware merely an ASUS ROG Ally with a logo, because Xbox contributed software integration and handheld-focused design work. It is equally inaccurate to describe it as an Xbox Series console in portable form.

Xbox Play Anywhere and PC Game Pass users
These players have the clearest reason to consider an Ally: supported Play Anywhere purchases, PC Game Pass titles and Xbox cloud services can be accessed from one handheld interface. Availability still depends on the individual game, Windows support, subscription tier and network conditions.

Steam and other PC launchers can run because Windows remains the underlying system. However, buyers who mainly want a simple SteamOS appliance should compare the Windows setup and desktop overhead with a Steam Deck or another Linux-oriented handheld.

Performance-focused buyers
The Ally X is aimed at buyers willing to pay a substantial premium for higher-end hardware, memory and storage. At $999.99 in the United States, it should be compared with other premium handheld PCs and entry-level gaming laptops, not only game consoles.
Battery and compatibility limitations
Performance changes with power mode, game, resolution, refresh rate and whether the charger is connected. Windows updates, drivers, third-party launchers, anti-cheat systems and games designed for keyboard and mouse can all create friction. Cloud play additionally depends on latency, bandwidth, regional availability and subscription status.

What the 2026 X20 announcement changes
The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a later ROG 20th-anniversary variant, not the device shown in the March 2025 teaser. ASUS announced an OLED display and translucent design, but the announcement does not establish a final U.S. retail price. Its details are listed in ASUS’s press release.
