ASUS ROG Ally Desktop Mode Explained: How to Configure It

ASUS ROG Ally Desktop Mode is an Armoury Crate SE profile that turns the built-in controls into a mouse, keyboard and Windows shortcut system. Here’s how to enable, customize and troubleshoot it.

ROG Ally Desktop Mode is not a second Windows environment. It is an Armoury Crate SE control profile that translates the Ally’s built-in sticks, triggers, bumpers and buttons into mouse, keyboard and shortcut inputs while Windows 11 is running. Switch to it for Windows, File Explorer, browsers, launchers and Steam’s desktop client; use Gamepad Mode for controller-focused games.

What Desktop Mode actually does

The Ally always runs Windows 11. “Desktop Mode” is ASUS Armoury Crate SE’s input configuration layered over that Windows desktop. In Gamepad Mode, the controls primarily behave like an Xbox-style controller. In Desktop Mode, they provide cursor movement, clicks, keyboard keys and shortcuts. Auto Mode attempts to choose an appropriate behavior for each application, but launchers and Steam’s desktop interface can still require a manual switch.

Current Armoury Crate SE releases cover the original ROG Ally, ROG Ally X and newer ROG Xbox Ally models. Menu names, button labels and available shortcuts can differ by model and software version, so treat the steps below as the current general path rather than an assertion that every screen is identical. ASUS’s latest procedure is documented at its ROG Ally support FAQ.

Enable Desktop Mode in about 10 seconds

  1. Press the Ally’s Command Center button.
  2. Find Control Mode in the Command Center panel.
  3. Tap the tile until it reads Desktop Mode, or open its selector and choose Desktop Mode.
  4. Move the right stick on the Windows desktop to confirm that the pointer moves.
  5. Press the right bumper for a left click and the right trigger for a right click.

If Control Mode is not shown, edit the Command Center layout and add the tile. ASUS documents configurable Command Center tiles for supported models at this support page.

Default Desktop Mode controls

These are ASUS’s standard assignments. They are not guaranteed after you create a custom profile.

Control Typical Desktop Mode function
Right stick Move the mouse cursor
Right bumper Left click
Right trigger Right click
Touchscreen Tap, drag, scroll and select text
Hold M1 or M2, then press D-pad Up Open the on-screen keyboard

For the keyboard shortcut, hold the rear paddle first and then press D-pad Up. Pressing them in the opposite order may not invoke it.

Customize the profile in Armoury Crate SE

  1. Open Armoury Crate SE.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Control Mode, then Configure.
  4. Choose Desktop Mode.
  5. Select the button, stick, trigger or paddle you want to change.
  6. Choose a function category: Gamepad, Action, Keyboard, Numpad, Mouse or Combination Keys.
  7. Save or apply the configuration, return to Windows and test each important assignment.

Armoury Crate supports complete mappings for the main controls in its Desktop Mode and Gamepad Mode presets. Rear paddles can act as modifiers when held with another button. Details and category names are listed by ASUS at the Armoury Crate control-mode FAQ and its UK support equivalent.

A practical browsing and productivity layout

The following is a recommendation, not an ASUS default. Change one input layer at a time if you also use Steam Input, a per-game Armoury Crate profile or third-party remapping software.

Desired action Suggested assignment
Move pointer Right stick
Left click Right bumper
Right click Right trigger
Open item or confirm A button mapped to Enter
Cancel or go back B button mapped to Escape
Scroll D-pad Up/Down, or a stick-click combination with stick movement
Modifier M1 or M2 mapped to Shift, Ctrl or Alt
On-screen keyboard M1/M2 + D-pad Up
Close a window A paddle combination mapped to Alt+F4
Copy and paste Secondary combinations mapped to Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V
Switch applications A rear-paddle combination mapped to Alt+Tab

Combination keys may collide with game profiles, Windows shortcuts or Armoury Crate hotkeys. Test mappings in the exact application you intend to use.

Open and use the on-screen keyboard

  • Touchscreen: tap a text field and let Windows display the keyboard.
  • Command Center: open Command Center and select its on-screen keyboard control when available.
  • Hardware shortcut: hold M1 or M2 and press D-pad Up.

On supported Windows 11 configurations, the newer Gamepad Layout Keyboard can temporarily prioritize D-pad and face-button selection over cursor input while it is in the foreground. ASUS lists Windows 11 24H2 build 26100.3624 or later, update KB5053656 and Armoury Crate SE 2.1.10.0 or later for that behavior; the exact result depends on your model, build and installed updates. See ASUS’s current FAQ. Close the keyboard after typing or switch back to the control mode you need if the pointer appears to stop.

Choose the right mode for each application

Situation Recommended mode
Windows desktop or File Explorer Desktop Mode
Browser navigation Desktop Mode
Steam desktop client Desktop Mode
Steam Big Picture Gamepad Mode
Xbox-style PC game with controller support Gamepad Mode
Game without usable controller support Desktop Mode or a custom game profile
External keyboard and mouse connected Either; Gamepad Mode avoids unintended remapping
Unclear input requirements Try Auto Mode, then switch manually if necessary

Steam’s desktop client is not the same interface as Big Picture. If its controls do nothing, open Command Center while Steam is visible and select Desktop Mode manually. If Steam Input is also emulating mouse movement, simplify or disable one system to prevent duplicate input.

Use Desktop Mode with a dock

Desktop Mode is optional when a physical keyboard and mouse are attached. A practical docked setup usually includes an external monitor or TV, USB or Bluetooth keyboard, USB or Bluetooth mouse, and power delivery through the dock or charger. The Ally’s USB-C port can carry display output through a compatible dock or adapter.

For example, ASUS’s ROG Gaming Charger Dock provides HDMI 2.0, USB-A, USB-C power input and a bundled 2-meter USB-C cable. ASUS advertises up to 1080p at 120 Hz or 4K at 60 Hz, subject to the display, cable and device configuration. Specifications are listed at the official product page. Dock pricing and availability change, so verify them before buying.

A dock does not add unlimited expansion or change the Ally into a conventional desktop PC. It remains a Windows handheld with limited ports and mobile-class performance, and charging results depend on the dock, charger, cable, firmware and Ally model. Choose a dock with USB-C Power Delivery input and the display outputs and refresh rates your monitor requires.

Troubleshoot missing cursor or clicks

Right stick does nothing

  1. Open Command Center and check whether Control Mode is set to Gamepad Mode.
  2. Switch to Desktop Mode manually.
  3. Close and reopen the affected application.
  4. Check the active Armoury Crate game profile.
  5. Restart Armoury Crate SE, then restart Windows if necessary.

Armoury Crate SE is missing

ASUS says uninstalling Armoury Crate can leave the Ally recognized only as a conventional gamepad and remove Desktop Mode mouse behavior. Reinstall Armoury Crate SE from ASUS support if it was removed: ASUS support instructions.

Steam desktop is unresponsive

Switch Control Mode to Desktop Mode while the Steam desktop client is active. Check Steam Input afterward; two systems attempting to emulate mouse controls can conflict.

File Explorer opens items with one tap

Touch interaction can make a single tap open a folder. To restore conventional double-click behavior, open File Explorer, select the three-dot menu, choose Options, select Double-click to open an item, and apply the change.

Profiles or controllers conflict

Possible competing layers include a global Desktop Mode mapping, a per-game Armoury Crate profile, Steam Input, Xbox Accessories, third-party controller utilities and Windows accessibility shortcuts. Change one layer at a time and test after each change. An external Bluetooth or USB controller does not automatically inherit the Ally’s built-in Desktop Mode mouse mapping; its behavior depends on the application and whichever remapping software is handling it.

Desktop Mode versus a physical keyboard and mouse

Desktop Mode is excellent for short tasks: opening a launcher, installing software, browsing, changing settings or controlling a docked display without reaching for another device. The touchscreen also handles quick taps and drags.

A real mouse and keyboard remain better for sustained typing, spreadsheets, precise pointer work, multitasking and long sessions. Use Desktop Mode as a convenient fallback or travel control scheme, not as a promise of desktop-class ergonomics.

Recommended workflow

  1. Leave games that have native controller support in Gamepad Mode.
  2. Switch to Desktop Mode for Windows, browsers, launchers and Steam’s desktop interface.
  3. Customize only the shortcuts you actually need in Armoury Crate SE.
  4. Use Auto Mode as a starting point, but switch manually when an application chooses the wrong behavior.
  5. For regular docked work, add a physical keyboard and mouse and verify the dock’s power and display capabilities.
