Verdict: The Asus ROG Phone 5S remains an appealing cheap gaming phone if you want AirTriggers, a 144Hz AMOLED display, front-facing stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a large battery. In 2026, however, it is a much harder recommendation as a primary phone because it launched in 2021, its latest major Android version identified in ASUS firmware documentation is Android 13, and imported versions can create serious carrier-compatibility problems.
Buy one only after confirming the exact regional model, carrier support, battery condition and return policy.

Specifications vary by market. ASUS lists separate regional configurations, so RAM, storage, network bands, SIM support, firmware channel and included accessories should be verified against the individual listing. See the official specifications.
What is the ROG Phone 5S?
The ROG Phone 5S is a refresh of the ROG Phone 5, not a completely new generation. Its main platform change is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888+, which ASUS advertised with a maximum CPU frequency of approximately 3.0GHz. The 5S also brought a higher 360Hz touch-sampling specification, while retaining much of the ROG Phone 5’s design and gaming hardware.

The display size, 6000mAh battery concept, camera arrangement, stereo speakers, headphone jack and core gaming philosophy are broadly similar to the standard ROG Phone 5. The result is a phone that still feels purpose-built for gaming, but is now an older device whose software, battery and network compatibility require careful evaluation.

The 5S is therefore a modest performance refresh rather than a generational leap. If a used ROG Phone 5 is substantially cheaper and in better condition, it may be the more sensible bargain. If prices are close, the 5S is preferable for its newer Snapdragon variant and higher touch-sampling specification.
Gaming performance and cooling
The Snapdragon 888+ remains capable of everyday Android use and demanding games. It is not a current flagship platform, but it has enough CPU and GPU performance for the phone’s gaming-focused role. Historical reviews found the device smooth in multitasking and gaming; those were period tests, not 2026 measurements, so they should not be read as a guarantee of present-day performance.

ASUS gives the phone a substantial gaming toolkit:
- AirTrigger 5: ultrasonic shoulder controls that let you map actions without covering the screen with your fingers.
- Armoury Crate: performance profiles, game-specific settings and control customization.
- Game Genie: an in-game overlay for controls and gaming utilities.
- X Mode and performance profiles: firmware-dependent options intended to prioritize gaming performance.
- Bypass charging and charging limits: options designed to reduce battery stress during long sessions.
- Side USB-C port: useful for charging while the phone is held horizontally and for compatible accessories.
The cooling system uses a centered processor layout, a vapor chamber and graphite thermal-spreading layers. ASUS claims that the optional AeroActive Cooler 5 can reduce CPU temperature by up to 10°C under its own test conditions. That is a manufacturer claim, not a universal result: ambient temperature, game, graphics settings, case use, performance mode and measurement method all affect the outcome.
The cooler can help during long sessions, but it adds bulk, noise and cost. It is also an additional accessory and is not included with every used bundle. Sustained gaming can still produce heat and throttling, particularly in an aging phone with a worn battery or poor internal condition.
Display: 144Hz is not 360Hz
The 6.78-inch AMOLED display remains one of the ROG Phone 5S’s strongest features. It runs at up to 144Hz, has a 2448×1080 resolution, supports HDR and uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. ASUS also advertises a 1ms response specification, DC dimming and Delta-E below 1 under its stated conditions.

The important distinction is:
- 144Hz refresh rate is how often the display can refresh its image, making supported animations and games look smoother.
- 360Hz touch sampling is how frequently the phone reads touch input. It does not mean the screen displays 360 frames per second.
Actual game frame rates depend on the game, graphics settings, thermal conditions and software optimization. Nevertheless, the combination of a high-refresh AMOLED panel and responsive touch input is still valuable for competitive games.
Speakers, headphone jack and design
The 5S is unusually well equipped for wired and front-facing audio. Its symmetrical dual front-facing speakers are useful when gaming in landscape orientation, and the 3.5mm headphone jack with an ESS DAC is a major differentiator in 2026. Dirac-related audio tuning is also part of the phone’s audio design.
The trade-off is size. At 238g and 9.9mm thick, the phone is heavy and substantial. Its 173×77mm body can be awkward for one-handed use, and the gamer styling will not suit buyers seeking a discreet phone. For games, video and landscape use, however, the large chassis and front speakers are practical advantages.
Battery life and charging
The 6000mAh equivalent battery is implemented as two 3000mAh cells. The phone supports up to 65W wired charging, along with Quick Charge 5.0 and USB Power Delivery. There is no wireless charging listed in ASUS’s official specifications.
Charging controls are particularly useful for gaming. Charging limits, steady charging, scheduled charging and bypass charging can reduce the time the battery spends at high charge or prevent the charger from continually feeding the battery during a game.
That original battery capacity should not be confused with the capacity of a used unit. A device released in 2021 may have significantly reduced battery health, especially if it spent years gaming while hot. Battery drain, charging speed and unexpected shutdowns deserve as much attention as the advertised specification.

Cameras: functional, not a reason to buy
The rear camera system consists of a 64MP Sony IMX686 main camera, a 13MP ultrawide and a macro camera. A 24MP front camera handles selfies and video calls, while the software includes features such as Pro Video mode.
The cameras are adequate for daylight snapshots and gaming-related content, but they are not the phone’s selling point. Contemporary coverage described the system as closely related to the previous ROG generation. Compared with newer mainstream flagships, buyers should expect weaker low-light photography, zoom and computational processing.
If camera quality, reliable video, portrait photography or long-term image-processing improvements matter more than gaming controls, a newer mainstream Android phone is a better fit.

Software support in 2026
The phone originally shipped with Android 11 and ROG UI. ASUS’s firmware documentation identifies firmware WW-33.0210.0210.200, dated November 14, 2023, as an Android 13 upgrade for the ROG Phone 5/5S software image covering WW, EU and RU SKUs.
That is the latest major Android version identified in the supplied official firmware documentation. It does not establish that every imported model received the same update, nor does it prove that no later regional firmware exists. It also does not promise future Android releases or a particular final security-patch date.
Before buying, check the exact model and regional firmware channel in ASUS’s firmware support page. A seller-installed “global ROM” does not turn a Chinese or Tencent device into an official US model. Hardware region, firmware region, bootloader state, Google services, OTA updates and carrier features are separate issues.

US carrier compatibility: verify before paying
This is one of the biggest risks of buying a ROG Phone 5S in the United States. ASUS lists different bands for different regional versions, including a separate US B version. A global specification sheet cannot be applied automatically to every marketplace listing.

- The exact model number and regional version.
- The LTE bands required by your carrier.
- VoLTE support and carrier certification.
- Whether the specific SKU supports the carrier’s 5G network.
- Whether the phone is a global, US or Chinese/Tencent version.
- That the IMEI is clean and not blocked or financed.
- That warranty and repair support apply in your country.
Band matching is necessary but not sufficient. A phone can show apparently compatible bands yet have unreliable VoLTE, incomplete carrier certification or poor support after network changes. Listings described as “unlocked,” “GSM only” or “global ROM” should be treated as warnings to investigate, not as proof of compatibility.
ROG Phone 5S versus 5S Pro
The standard ROG Phone 5S should not be confused with the more expensive ROG Phone 5S Pro. In particular, rear touch sensors associated with the Pro model should not be listed as a standard 5S feature. ASUS’s official specifications distinguish the models.
Used listings frequently mix the names, photographs and accessories of the 5S, 5S Pro, ROG Phone 5 and other variants. Confirm the model in the phone’s settings, not just in the seller’s title. Also check whether the listing includes the AeroActive Cooler 5, charger and original case.

Depending on market, the 5S was sold with combinations including 8GB/128GB, 12GB/128GB or 256GB, 16GB/256GB or 512GB, and 18GB/512GB. Availability varies by region.
Do not pay extra merely for a large RAM number. For most games, storage capacity, battery condition and regional compatibility matter more than the difference between high-end memory configurations. Confirm the exact combination, firmware channel, SIM configuration, charger, cooler and warranty before buying.

Buying a used ROG Phone 5S: inspection checklist
Use this checklist before accepting the phone or within the seller’s return period:
- Open Settings → System → About phone and record the exact model number.
- Confirm the IMEI with the intended carrier or a reputable device-check service.
- Test both SIM slots if dual-SIM operation matters.
- Test LTE data, VoLTE calls, SMS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and 5G where applicable.
- Test both USB-C ports for charging and accessory detection.
- Test AirTriggers, speakers, microphone, vibration, fingerprint reader, cameras and headphone jack.
- Run a demanding game for 20–30 minutes. Watch for crashes, abnormal heat, severe throttling or sudden shutdowns.
- Check battery drain and charging behavior. A rapid percentage drop or unstable charging is a warning sign.
- Confirm whether the advertised 65W charger is included and genuine.
- Look for ghost touches, display discoloration, cracked glass, loose ports and water damage.
- Be cautious with seller-installed ROMs unless you understand firmware recovery and the consequences for updates.
Owner reports sometimes mention serious hardware failures, but anecdotal reports do not establish a failure rate for the entire model. The sensible response is careful inspection, a clear return policy and avoiding a unit with unexplained reboots, intermittent networks, dead speakers, charging faults or camera failures.
Who should buy it?
Buy the ROG Phone 5S if:
- You want an inexpensive, gaming-focused secondary phone.
- AirTriggers, front-facing speakers and a headphone jack matter more than camera quality.
- You can verify the regional model and carrier compatibility.
- The price is substantially below newer gaming phones.
- You accept Android 13-era software and uncertain future support.
- The battery, motherboard, ports and display pass inspection.
Avoid it if:
- You need long-term Android and security support.
- You depend on Verizon or another carrier without verifying the exact SKU and VoLTE certification.
- You expect flagship-level cameras.
- You want a compact or lightweight phone.
- The seller cannot disclose the model number or offers no meaningful return protection.
- The price approaches that of a newer gaming phone or current flagship.
Alternatives by buyer priority
Choose a newer ROG Phone if you want a newer chipset, a longer support runway and newer accessories. It will cost more, and feature sets can differ, so check whether the specific model retains the features you value, such as a headphone jack.

Choose a mainstream Android flagship if you care about cameras, software support, carrier certification, repair availability and resale value. You will usually give up dedicated gaming controls, front-facing speakers or headphone output.
Consider the standard ROG Phone 5 only when it is meaningfully cheaper or in much better condition. It shares much of the 5S design but uses the Snapdragon 888 rather than the Snapdragon 888+.
Final verdict
The Asus ROG Phone 5S is still a compelling piece of gaming hardware, not a sensible all-purpose flagship in 2026. Its 144Hz AMOLED display, 360Hz touch sampling, AirTriggers, stereo speakers, 3.5mm jack, large battery and gaming software remain distinctive.

For a cheap secondary gaming phone, it can be worthwhile if the battery is healthy, the price is low and the regional model works on your network. For a primary phone, the age of the Snapdragon 888+, Android 13-era software, weaker cameras and uncertain carrier support make newer alternatives safer. The best 5S purchase is not the one with the most RAM; it is the one with a verified SKU, clean IMEI, healthy battery, working hardware and a strong return policy.
