The ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is a specialist gaming phone: it pairs Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 performance with a 165Hz AMOLED display, physical AirTrigger controls, a 6,000mAh battery and an included AeroActive Cooler 7. That package makes it compelling for players who game for long stretches and will use its extras. Its 246g weight, middling cameras, cluttered software and premium launch pricing make it a harder recommendation as an everyday phone.
What makes the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate a gaming phone?
The Ultimate’s appeal is not just its processor. It combines gaming controls and thermal hardware with a high-refresh display, large battery and accessories designed for sustained play. ASUS lists a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor running at up to 3.2GHz, Adreno 740 graphics, 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage on its official specifications page.
AirTriggers provide touch-sensitive controls along the phone’s edges, giving compatible games an alternative to on-screen buttons. The software adds performance modes, game recording and configuration tools through Armoury Crate and Game Genie. These features matter most if you play demanding games regularly; they are less persuasive if you mainly want a general-purpose Android phone.
How fast is it in demanding games?
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and generous memory make this a powerful 2023-era Android gaming phone. ASUS claims the chip can deliver up to 15% faster CPU performance, 20% faster GPU performance and 15% better CPU power consumption than the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Those are ASUS’s comparative claims, not independent measurements.

In its 2023 review, TechRadar reported its fastest benchmark results to that point on the test unit and said demanding games maintained high graphics and frame rates. The reviewer also reported a full day of gaming without attaching the cooler. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee: results vary with the game, settings, ambient temperature, network and screen brightness.
The 165Hz screen is faster than the 120Hz refresh rate common on many phones, but a game has to support high frame rates to make full use of it. TechRadar noted that few games could actually render at 165 frames per second. The extra headroom can make supported games feel exceptionally smooth, but it does not make every title run at that rate.
What does the AeroActive Cooler 7 add?
The Ultimate includes the AeroActive Cooler 7. When attached, it opens the Ultimate-exclusive AeroActive Portal to direct airflow into the phone’s chassis. The accessory also has a fan, thermoelectric cooling, additional controls and a stand. ASUS says its cooler adds a subwoofer and turns the setup into a portable 2.1 sound system; that audio description is the manufacturer’s claim.

- Made from the high quality tempered-glass for maximum scratch protection and no residue when removed
- 2.5D rounded edge glass for comfort on the fingers and hand
- 9H hardness, 99.99% HD clarity, and maintains the original touch experience
- Hydrophobic and oleo-phobic coating to reduce sweat and reduce fingerprints
- Include 3 pcs tempered glass screen protectors
The cooler is most useful for extended sessions where heat and comfort become concerns. It also makes an already large phone bulkier and introduces an accessory connection and firmware that can require troubleshooting. TechRadar reported encountering a cooler firmware-update loop at the time of its review, so the cooling system is a meaningful extra, but not a completely friction-free one.
Screen, sound and battery
ASUS specifies a 6.78-inch Samsung AMOLED display with 2448 × 1080 resolution and up to 165Hz refresh. ASUS says brightness is doubled versus the previous generation, positioning the screen for outdoor use as well as gaming. Its resolution is ample for play, though buyers prioritizing maximum sharpness or general-purpose display performance may prefer a mainstream flagship.
The phone has symmetrical front-facing stereo speakers. With the cooler attached, ASUS describes the additional subwoofer as part of a portable 2.1 audio setup; treat that as a product claim rather than an independently measured sound comparison.

Its 6,000mAh battery is a strong fit for gaming. TechRadar reported at least eight hours of play in its testing and end-of-day endurance under heavy mixed use. Battery life will depend on the game, refresh rate, brightness, connectivity and other settings, so those results should not be read as a fixed runtime for every owner.
Size, durability and everyday handling
The Ultimate comes in Storm White and weighs 246g according to ASUS. TechRadar described it as big and heavy but comfortable to hold. That trade-off is understandable for a gaming device with a large battery and cooling system, but the weight is noticeable if you want a compact phone or spend long periods holding it one-handed.

ASUS lists an IP54 rating. This indicates limited dust protection and protection against splashes, not protection against immersion in water. The gamer-forward styling, including the rear ROG Vision display, makes the phone distinctive rather than discreet.

Are the cameras and software good enough?
The cameras are the clearest compromise against a similarly priced mainstream flagship. TechRadar described the sensors as older, mid-range hardware, noted there is no zoom lens, and found image quality below camera-focused rivals. Its review reported blurry or washed-out detail in comparisons and weak selfies. If photos are a central reason for buying a premium phone, this is the wrong ROG Phone generation to choose over a camera-led flagship.
Armoury Crate, Game Genie and the performance controls offer detailed ways to manage games, but the interface may feel intrusive if you want a simple phone experience. TechRadar initially encountered glitches and said updates removed the game-breaking problems; it still found controls easy to trigger accidentally and home-screen customization limited. The gaming interface is useful when actively tuning a session, but it is not as polished or restrained as the software experience on many mainstream phones.

These are historical launch and review prices, not a statement of current retail availability or pricing. ASUS’s 2023 launch announcement gave the ROG Phone 7 series a starting MSRP of $999.99. TechRadar’s 2023 review listed the Ultimate at $1,399, £1,199.99 and AU$2,099. Those figures describe different markets and the review’s pricing at that time, not today’s offers.

The Ultimate’s premium buys gaming-specific distinctions: the bundled cooler, Ultimate-only AeroActive Portal, 165Hz screen, AirTriggers, two USB ports, display output and rear ROG Vision display. Cheaper gaming phones can offer similar core silicon, while conventional flagships generally make stronger cases on cameras, software polish or portability. For a buyer who will not use the cooler, controls or sustained-performance features, the premium is difficult to justify.
Because the model launched in 2023, current stock, seller condition, accessory inclusion and price should be checked with the retailer before buying. Confirm that a listing actually includes the AeroActive Cooler 7 rather than assuming an accessory shown in product imagery is in the box.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate?
- Consider it if mobile gaming is a priority and you will use the AirTriggers, sustained-performance options, 165Hz display and cooler ecosystem.
- Choose a less expensive gaming phone if you want strong gaming hardware but do not need the Ultimate’s distinctive accessories and features.
- Choose a conventional flagship if camera quality, portability, understated design or a cleaner everyday software experience matter more than gaming controls and cooling.
