Verdict: The ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition was one of 2024’s most complete gaming phones, pairing Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 performance with AirTrigger controls, a 165Hz AMOLED display, bypass charging, a headphone jack, IP68 protection and a bundled AeroActive Cooler X. In 2026 it remains an excellent specialist device, especially when discounted and sold with its cooler.
It is not an automatic best buy at the original U.S. launch price of $1,499.99. ASUS launched the newer ROG Phone 9 Pro Edition at the same MSRP, with Snapdragon 8 Elite, a 5,800mAh battery and up to 185Hz gaming refresh. The Phone 8 Pro Edition makes the most sense when its price is substantially lower or its included cooler is particularly valuable to you.
What the ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition actually is
The product line has three relevant tiers:
- ROG Phone 8: the base model.
- ROG Phone 8 Pro: the higher-capacity configuration.
- ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition: 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM, 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage and, in the U.S. launch package, an AeroActive Cooler X.
The Pro and Pro Edition share the same processor, display, cameras, battery, ports and gaming features. The Edition’s practical advantages are maximum storage, extra memory for heavy multitasking and the bundled cooler—not a different CPU or display. Is it still the best gaming phone?
At launch, contemporary reviews from TechRadar and Android Central treated it as an unusually complete gaming package that was also easier to live with than earlier ROG phones. Its combination of shoulder controls, accessory support, wired audio, cooling and gaming software was difficult to match.

The superlative needs a date and a price qualifier now. The ROG Phone 9 Pro Edition is newer and launched at the same U.S. MSRP. The honest 2026 description is: one of the best gaming phones of its generation, and a compelling discounted flagship when the cooler and controls matter more than having the newest silicon.

These figures come from ASUS’s technical specification page. The Snapdragon platform and thermal conditions determine sustained frame rates far more than the 24GB number. Extra RAM helps keep large games, emulators, recording tools and browsers resident, but it does not itself increase GPU performance. ASUS confirms the components; the available evidence does not establish a universal FPS or temperature result for every game, ambient condition and graphics setting.
Why 165Hz is useful—but conditional
A 165Hz mode can make supported games and menus feel smoother, but a game must render at a matching rate. Many Android games are capped at 60, 90 or 120 frames per second. A stable 120fps mode is preferable to an unstable 165fps mode, and higher refresh can consume more power.

The bundled AeroActive Cooler X is a real fan accessory, not decoration. It attaches to the phone, removes heat during demanding play and adds physical controls while making a landscape grip more comfortable. That makes the Pro Edition more defensible than a conventional flagship with the same processor.

Cooling cannot guarantee maximum performance in every title. Results vary with room temperature, game optimization, brightness, network activity, frame caps and whether the phone is charging. The trade-offs are extra bulk, fan noise, a separate accessory to carry and another USB-C connection to manage. It is most valuable for long sessions of games such as Genshin Impact, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, PUBG Mobile, Diablo Immortal and demanding emulation.
AirTriggers and Game Genie controls
AirTriggers are capacitive shoulder zones that map to on-screen controls. They are not mechanical buttons, but they can provide additional simultaneous inputs without a separate controller.
A practical shooter layout
- Map the left trigger to aim-down-sights.
- Map the right trigger to fire.
- Keep movement and reload on the display so your thumbs remain available for camera control and movement.
- Use the gaming overlay to adjust sensitivity and notification blocking for that title.
This arrangement is useful in shooters because aiming and firing no longer require two thumb taps. Mapping quality depends on the game, and touch-sensitive triggers can feel less consistent than a physical gamepad.
Other useful mappings
- Assign jump, reload or an ability to a shoulder zone in action games.
- Use trigger positions for acceleration and braking in racing games.
- Where the game and phone software support it, experiment with motion or gyroscope aiming.
Players accustomed to console controllers may still prefer real buttons. Casual or turn-based players may never use the controls enough to justify the Edition’s premium.

Display, design and durability
The flat 6.78-inch AMOLED runs at 2,400 × 1,080, supports HDR10, ten-point multitouch and glove touch, and reaches a claimed peak brightness of 2,500 nits. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects the front. Compared with older ROG models, the flatter panel and less extreme styling make it more credible as an everyday phone.
At 225g, it is heavy before adding a case or cooler. The Phantom Black body has IP68 protection, meaning resistance under specified test conditions—not immunity from liquid damage or permission to submerge it deliberately. A 3.5mm headphone jack remains valuable for low-latency wired gaming audio. USB-C connectivity includes a side-oriented port that is convenient when holding the phone horizontally.
The rear AniMe Vision panel uses 341 programmable mini-LED elements. It is distinctive for notifications and personalization, but it does not improve frame rates or responsiveness.
Battery, charging and bypass charging
The 5,500mAh typical battery is large by mainstream flagship standards, although it is smaller than the 6,000mAh cells in earlier ROG generations. ASUS rates wired charging at 65W and Qi wireless charging at 15W. Actual endurance changes substantially with refresh rate, brightness, signal strength, graphics settings and heat; reviews disagreed on whether the reduced capacity was disappointing.

Bypass charging is the important gaming feature. When enabled through the phone’s gaming tools, power can be directed to the system instead of continuously cycling the battery. That can reduce battery stress and heat during a long plugged-in session. Verify the exact menu wording on your regional firmware, because ASUS can change paths between software versions. Wireless charging is convenient for ordinary use but is generally less suitable for intensive gaming than a wired connection paired with the cooler.

The telephoto is a major improvement over the usual gaming-phone camera selection. Reviews from TechRadar and Tom’s Guide found the system more usable than earlier ROG generations. It is still not a clear substitute for the best camera-first phones from Samsung, Google or Apple, whose processing, video and low-light consistency remain the tougher comparison.
Stereo speakers, the headphone jack, wireless charging and IP68 protection make the Phone 8 Pro Edition a more practical all-day handset. The compromises are its size, weight, gaming overlays and the likelihood that you will carry the cooler only when you expect a long session.
Software and update support
The phone launched with Android 14 and ROG UI. ROG UI stays relatively close to stock Android while adding Game Genie overlays, performance modes, mapping and macro tools, notification controls and other gaming utilities. Reviewers also noted gaming-themed additions and preinstalled applications.

Android Central and Tom’s Guide reported a commitment of two Android OS upgrades and four years of security updates, a weak promise for a $1,499.99 phone. Confirm the current Android and security-patch level for your exact regional model before buying. Firmware timing, carrier certification and unlocked status can differ, and Phone 8 should not be assumed to receive every Phone 9 feature.

Choose the standard Pro if it is materially cheaper, you do not need 1TB and you already own a controller or cooler. The Edition’s extra RAM is mainly a multitasking and storage benefit; its cooler is the more meaningful gaming differentiator.

Specifications and launch details are documented by ASUS for the Phone 8, Phone 9 and the Phone 9 announcement. If prices are close, the newer model is the rational purchase for its processor, battery and longer runway.
Network, warranty and used-phone checks
U.S. buyers should verify the exact SKU rather than relying on a generic listing. Before payment, check:
- Model number, LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE support and carrier certification.
- Physical-SIM versus eSIM requirements.
- Warranty region and whether the seller is ASUS-authorized.
- Return and repair policies.
- For used or imported units: Google-service availability, charger type, battery condition and whether the AeroActive Cooler X is genuine and included.
Chinese or carrier-specific versions can have different bands, firmware and warranty coverage. Marketplace sellers may also separate the phone from the original cooler bundle.
Who should buy it?
Buy the Pro Edition when
- You play demanding games for long sessions and will use the cooler and bypass charging.
- You want shoulder controls without carrying a separate controller.
- You need 1TB for games, emulators, recordings and media.
- You value a headphone jack, wireless charging and IP68 more than a lightweight body.
- The phone is meaningfully cheaper than the ROG Phone 9 Pro Edition.
Choose another phone when
- You prioritize cameras, compact dimensions or a clearer long-term update commitment.
- You mostly play games capped at 60 or 120fps.
- You already own a controller and will not use the cooler.
- You want maximum performance per dollar and can accept weaker cameras, support or water resistance.
Bottom line: Buy the ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition for its complete gaming hardware—AirTriggers, sustained-play cooling, bypass charging, high-refresh display and wired audio—when the price reflects its age. At or near $1,499.99, choose the ROG Phone 9 Pro Edition instead; at a deep discount with the cooler included, the Phone 8 Pro Edition remains an outstanding gaming-focused everyday phone.
