ASUS introduced the ROG Phone 8 and ROG Phone 8 Pro in China on January 16, 2024, after presenting the series internationally at CES 2024. Both use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but the bigger change is how they look: thinner bezels, a centered selfie-camera cutout and a slimmer, more conventional body replace the overtly gaming-focused styling of earlier ROG Phones. AirTriggers, gaming-oriented cooling and other ROG features remain.
China launch date, availability and prices
The China debut covered two models: the ROG Phone 8 and ROG Phone 8 Pro. Preorders opened ahead of sales beginning January 18, 2024. The following are the configurations and China launch prices announced at the time—not verified current retail prices:

Gizmochina’s January 16, 2024 launch report lists the China pricing and sales timing. These figures do not establish what the phones cost in 2026 or in other markets.
A more conventional look, without leaving gaming behind
ASUS reshaped the series around a more mainstream flagship silhouette: the phone is slimmer and lighter than the ROG Phone 7 Pro according to ASUS’s China product page, with thinner display borders, a centered punch-hole selfie camera and a squarer rear-camera housing. The change makes the phones less visually conspicuous than earlier ROG designs, though the Pro’s matte glass back and rear lighting still signal its gaming identity.

ROG Phone 8 and 8 Pro lighting
The standard ROG Phone 8 has a customizable Aura RGB logo. The Pro replaces that simpler treatment with AniMe Vision, a rear display system made up of 341 programmable LEDs. It is a design distinction, not a separate core gaming platform.
The redesign also brings a trade-off: the series has a stated typical battery capacity equivalent to 5,500mAh, compared with 6,000mAh in some earlier ROG Phone models. ASUS’s specifications do not establish a particular real-world battery life, so the capacity alone cannot say how long a charge lasts.
Display: 165Hz maximum, with adaptive refresh modes
Both models have a 6.78-inch Samsung AMOLED panel with 2,400 × 1,080 resolution, HDR10 support and Gorilla Glass Victus 2. ASUS lists a peak brightness of up to 2,500 nits; the Pro specification page also lists a 1,600-nit high-brightness mode and Delta-E below 1.

The 165Hz figure is the panel’s maximum refresh rate, while LTPO adaptive refresh support spans 1Hz to 120Hz. These describe different operating modes: 165Hz is available for high-refresh gaming, not a rate the phone continuously maintains while also adapting down to 1Hz. A 165Hz display also does not guarantee that a game renders at 165 frames per second; the game, graphics settings, thermals and software support all matter. The panel supports 10-point multitouch and glove touch.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 performance and cooling
The series uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform, with an Adreno 750 GPU and a listed maximum CPU frequency of 3.3GHz. China configurations reach 16GB RAM and 256GB storage on the standard Phone 8, while the Pro is offered with 16GB/512GB or 24GB/1TB. The Pro specification page lists LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.0 storage.
ASUS claims the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 delivers 30% higher CPU performance and 25% higher GPU performance than the previous platform. Those are ASUS’s comparison figures, not independent test results.

Cooling architecture and the optional cooler
ASUS describes the Pro’s Matrix liquid-cooling architecture 8.0 as combining vapor-chamber-style thermal hardware, graphene and a heat-conducting copper column positioned around the SoC and rear cover. The phones also support the AeroActive Cooler X accessory.
ASUS claims its cooling architecture improves cooling efficiency by 22%. For the AeroActive Cooler X, ASUS claims 30% more effective cooling than the previous generation, a semiconductor cooling component with 160% more area, and a rear-cover temperature reduction of up to 36°C under specified test conditions. These manufacturer claims are not guarantees of results in every game or environment.
An external cooler is most relevant to sustained, demanding play. It adds bulk, noise and accessory cost, and may offer little practical benefit during short or casual sessions. ASUS says the AeroActive Cooler X is included with the 24GB/1TB ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition; bundle contents for other configurations can differ.

Gaming controls, audio and ports
- AirTriggers: Shoulder controls provide additional inputs in compatible games. Support and available functions vary by game; they should not be assumed to work in every title.
- Landscape charging: A side-mounted USB-C port is positioned to make charging during landscape play more convenient.
- Audio: ASUS lists stereo speakers with a five-magnet design and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
- Accessory support: The AeroActive Cooler X adds a cooling option for long, high-load sessions.
- Display response: High refresh and touch features can support responsive play, but do not by themselves determine game performance.
Cameras, battery and everyday features
Camera hardware
The rear system comprises a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization, a 13MP ultrawide and a 32MP telephoto camera with 3× optical zoom and optical stabilization. The front camera is 32MP RGBW. ASUS also promotes six-axis hybrid gimbal stabilization, AI image segmentation, semantic photo search, quick-launch photography functions, long-exposure and multi-frame features. These specifications describe hardware and features, not measured image quality or proof that the cameras match the best camera-focused phones.
Battery and charging
Both phones list a 5,500mAh-equivalent typical battery capacity, 65W wired charging and up to 15W Qi 1.3 wireless charging. ASUS also lists Quick Charge 5.0 and USB Power Delivery compatibility. The lower stated capacity than some earlier ROG Phones is part of the slimmer redesign’s trade-off; no endurance result follows from the capacity figure alone.

ASUS lists the Pro at 163.8 × 76.8 × 8.9mm and 225g, with IP68 protection. IP68 denotes dust and water resistance under defined test conditions; it does not mean the phone is waterproof or that liquid damage will necessarily be covered by warranty.

The China Pro specifications list dual Nano-SIM support, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, an in-display fingerprint reader and face recognition. ASUS lists Android 14 with ROG UI for the cited configuration. Software, network bands, Google-service support, accessories and warranty can vary between China and international versions, so buyers considering an import should confirm those details for the specific unit and market.

The Pro is chiefly a higher-tier configuration with more storage and RAM, a more elaborate rear lighting system and a bundle distinction. The 24GB/1TB option offers substantial capacity, but the specifications do not establish a proportional gaming-performance gain from the extra memory.
Who is the ROG Phone 8 series for?
- Consider the ROG Phone 8 if you want the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform, AirTriggers and gaming-focused features in the lower-tier configuration, without paying for the Pro’s maximum storage or AniMe Vision.
- Consider the ROG Phone 8 Pro if you need its higher memory or storage configurations, want the AniMe Vision rear display, or are considering the 24GB/1TB bundle that includes the AeroActive Cooler X.
- Look elsewhere if you rarely play demanding games and would not use AirTriggers or sustained-performance cooling. The phone remains a large 225g device in the Pro specification, and the centered punch-hole camera interrupts the display for people who prefer an uninterrupted gaming screen.
For regional specifications and availability, consult the official China ROG Phone 8 Pro specifications, the official China ROG Phone 8 specifications and ASUS’s China buying page. Core hardware is shared across the series, but that should not be taken to mean every regional unit is identical.
