The ASUS ROG Phone 9 is a real, high-end gaming phone—but it is not a new August 2026 launch. ASUS unveiled the ROG Phone 9 family globally on November 19, 2024, and the series reached the United States in January 2025. The standard model launched at about $999/$1,000 in the U.S.; those are historical launch prices, not verified August 2026 prices. Its Snapdragon 8 Elite, AirTriggers, 165Hz/185Hz display modes, bypass charging and gaming software remain compelling, but regional compatibility, accessory costs and uncertain long-term support now matter as much as raw speed.

What launched, and when?
ASUS announced the ROG Phone 9, ROG Phone 9 Pro and ROG Phone 9 Pro Edition worldwide on November 19, 2024. The U.S. launch followed in January 2025 around CES, as documented in ASUS’s global announcement and its U.S. availability announcement.
The family is not one uniform specification. Memory, storage, wireless bands, SIM features, charger contents and pricing depend on the market. Check the exact model number rather than relying on a seller’s “global” label.

Why this is a gaming phone
Controls and software
Ultrasonic AirTriggers provide shoulder-style inputs without a physical gamepad. Armoury Crate and Game Genie add per-game key mapping, macros, vibration mapping, crosshair and scout-mode tools, touch-edge blocking, no-alerts and no-calls modes, picture-in-picture utilities, background mode and bypass charging. AirTriggers can also be assigned to ordinary phone actions.
Bypass charging powers the phone from the charger while limiting battery charging during play, reducing unnecessary battery cycling. It does not eliminate heat: the processor, display and charger still produce thermal load.
Physical gaming hardware
- A side-mounted USB-C port supports more comfortable landscape charging and cooler connections.
- The 3.5mm jack and stereo speakers avoid forcing wireless audio during play.
- The rear AniMe Vision display provides programmable lighting and graphics; the standard phone’s implementation is smaller and lower-density than the Pro’s.
- The optional AeroActive Cooler X adds active cooling and controls. ASUS listed a $99.99 U.S. launch price, but that is a dated price signal, not a verified 2026 price. See the official cooler page.
Display: 165Hz is the normal headline, 185Hz is a special mode
The 6.78-inch 2400×1080 LTPO AMOLED can vary from 1Hz to 120Hz for efficiency. ASUS lists 165Hz as the maximum system-setting refresh rate and 185Hz through Game Genie. The latter is not a promise that every game renders at 185 frames per second: the game must support the frame rate, and sustained performance depends on workload and temperature. Peak brightness is 2,500 nits, with 1,600 nits high-brightness mode, and the panel uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Performance, heat and battery
Snapdragon 8 Elite and Adreno 830 give the ROG Phone 9 current-generation flagship-class Android performance for its launch era. Long sessions are a different question from short benchmark bursts. Android Central’s ROG Phone 9 Pro review praised the speed and reported heat during extended gaming, while observing no throttling in that reviewer’s testing. That is one test of the Pro, not a universal guarantee for every game, region or ambient temperature.
Recommended Free Tools
ASUS specifies a 5,800mAh equivalent typical battery, up to 65W wired charging through Quick Charge 5.0/USB Power Delivery 3.0, and up to 15W Qi 1.3 wireless charging. Do not treat the capacity figure as a guaranteed runtime result. A cooler can make sustained play more comfortable, but it adds cost and bulk.
Camera and everyday-phone compromises
The standard ROG Phone 9 has a 50MP main camera with gimbal stabilization, a 13MP ultrawide and a 5MP macro camera. The Pro adds a 32MP 3× telephoto according to Android Central’s review coverage, making it more flexible for portraits and distant subjects. Neither model is aimed primarily at replacing a camera-first flagship.

- 6.78 inches, LTPO AMOLED, 1B colors, 1080 x 2400 pixels
- 512GB Storage, 16GB RAM
- Android 15, Qualcomm SM8750-AB Snapdragon 8 Elite (3 nm), Octa-core (2x4.32 GHz Oryon V2 Phoenix L + 6x3.53 GHz Oryon V2 Phoenix M)
- Rear: 50 MP, f/1.9, 24mm (wide), 1/1.56", 1.0µm, PDAF, gimbal OIS, 13 MP, f/2.2, 13mm, 120˚ (ultrawide), 5 MP (macro), Front: 32 MP, f/2.5, 22mm (wide), 1/3.2", 0.7µm
The 227g chassis is substantial, and the rear gaming design will not suit everyone. In return you get IP68 protection, wireless charging, bright stereo audio, a headphone jack, a large battery and relatively clean software praised by independent review coverage. The phone can also serve as a normal daily handset, but its value is highest when you actually use its gaming controls.
ROG Phone 9 vs. 9 Pro vs. Pro Edition
| Area | ROG Phone 9 | ROG Phone 9 Pro / Pro Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Snapdragon 8 Elite | Snapdragon 8 Elite |
| U.S. launch configuration | 12GB/256GB reported at launch | 16GB/512GB reported at launch |
| Maximum configuration | Listings show up to 16GB/512GB | Pro Edition reaches 24GB/1TB |
| Rear display | Smaller, lower-density AniMe Vision | Higher-density implementation |
| Telephoto | Not listed for the standard model | 32MP 3× telephoto reported in review coverage |
| Cooling bundle | Cooler generally separate | Pro Edition bundles AeroActive Cooler X Pro, according to review coverage |
| U.S. launch price | About $999/$1,000 | About $1,199; Pro Edition about $1,499 |
The Pro’s extra RAM does not automatically create proportionally higher frame rates. You are mainly paying for storage headroom, the rear display, camera flexibility and, with the Pro Edition, the bundled cooler.
What is in the box?
ASUS lists a clear case, USB-C-to-USB-C cable, SIM ejector, 65W USB power adapter and documentation. A screen protector is listed only for certain Taiwan and Hong Kong configurations, so do not assume every regional box includes one. Cooler, controller and other gaming accessories are not part of the standard phone package unless the specific bundle says so.

U.S. and imported-model checklist
- Confirm the exact U.S. model number instead of accepting “global” as a compatibility label.
- Compare supported bands with your carrier, including VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and 5G behavior.
- Verify eSIM support; availability is geographically limited and should not be assumed.
- Check warranty coverage in your country and whether the seller is authorized.
- Confirm charger, case and screen-protector contents for that region.
- Identify whether the device is new, refurbished, open-box or imported, and read the return terms.
- Check current stock and price. January 2025 launch pricing is not a verified August 2026 street price.
- Review ASUS’s current update status for the exact regional model.
- Include a cooler or other accessories in the real gaming budget if you play demanding titles for long sessions.
ASUS separates WW, U.S. and CN network versions on its specification material. A listed band alone does not guarantee every carrier feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Software support and the 2026 buying risk
The phone launched with Android 15. ASUS’s user guide describes device and firmware updates through an ASUS account, but it does not establish a complete number of future Android-version upgrades or security-support years. Verify the current schedule before buying, particularly because the handset is now an older generation.
TechRadar reported that ASUS had no plans to launch new smartphones in 2026 while continuing warranty and software support for existing models. That report is context, not proof that support has ended or that ASUS has permanently left phones: see the report.

Who should buy it in 2026?
Buy the standard ROG Phone 9 when
- AirTriggers, bypass charging, Game Genie controls and a headphone jack matter more than camera versatility.
- You can find a legitimate regional model at a substantial discount to its launch price.
- You accept a heavy gaming-focused design and are willing to verify support and carrier compatibility.
Pay for the Pro when
- You need 512GB or 1TB storage, more memory or the Pro camera system.
- You specifically want the denser rear AniMe Vision display.
- The Pro Edition’s bundled AeroActive Cooler X Pro replaces a separate accessory purchase.
Consider an older ROG Phone
Android Central identified the ROG Phone 8 Pro as a potential lower-cost alternative with similar gaming software and controls. It has older hardware and a smaller battery, so compare battery health, update status, warranty and regional compatibility before choosing it.
Choose a conventional flagship or handheld instead
A mainstream flagship is usually a better fit for camera quality, compactness, resale value, carrier availability and longer support. A dedicated gaming handheld is preferable for console or PC streaming, emulation and physical controls, but it is not a cellular-camera replacement.
Verdict
The ROG Phone 9 remains a serious Android gaming tool rather than merely a fast phone: AirTriggers, Game Genie, bypass charging, the side USB-C port, high-refresh AMOLED and audio hardware form a coherent gaming system. In 2026, however, its price must reflect its age. Buy the standard model only after checking the exact regional version, current software status and total accessory cost; choose the Pro for its specific storage, camera, rear-display or bundled-cooler advantages, not simply for a larger RAM number.
