Asus’s ROG Strix laptop reported as a “2024” model was offered for preorder in mainland China on January 3, 2024, at ¥10,499 (about $1,478 at the time), with sales scheduled to begin January 9. The reported configuration paired an Intel Core i9-13980HX with an RTX 4060 Laptop GPU, 16GB of memory, a 1TB SSD, and a 16-inch 2560×1600, 240Hz display. The “2024” label needs context: Asus’s official specifications identify the matching G614 platform as the ROG Strix G16 (2023). The preorder price is historical, not a verified current offer.
What the China preorder included
Gizmochina’s January 3, 2024 report described a mainland-China preorder at ¥10,499, with the official sale set for January 9. Its approximate US-dollar conversion of $1,478 was a currency reference—not a US retail price or an amount that included import costs.

Asus’s G614 specification page is useful for checking the platform’s processor, graphics, display, memory, and MUX features. It does not establish that every detail of the Chinese preorder unit was identical to every G614 sold elsewhere.

Why “2024” does not necessarily mean a new hardware generation
The news report used “ROG Strix 2024,” but Asus’s official documentation calls the matching G614 family the ROG Strix G16 (2023). The safest reading is that “2024” referred to the Chinese release timing or market refresh. The specification match makes G614 the likely platform, but without a confirmed model number for the preorder listing, it would be too strong to say that Asus officially designated that exact unit a “2024 G16.”

This distinction matters when comparing it with newer laptops: a 2024 preorder date does not make the i9-13980HX and RTX 4060 a 2024-generation CPU-and-GPU pairing. Asus now lists later ROG Strix generations, including its newer Strix G16 family.
What the specifications mean for gaming
The RTX 4060 Laptop GPU makes this primarily a strong 1080p and capable 1600p gaming configuration. Its 240Hz screen can make motion look smoother and reduce display latency, but the panel’s refresh rate is not a promise that games will run at 240 frames per second. Many demanding games will not approach 240fps at native 2560×1600 resolution with maximum settings. Competitive games are more plausible high-refresh use cases, often after tuning settings; demanding titles may call for lower settings or upscaling and frame-generation features where supported.
The i9-13980HX is a powerful processor, with 8 performance cores and 16 efficiency cores, and can suit workloads such as compiling, rendering, or running virtual machines as well as gaming. But games that are limited by the GPU may not benefit much from paying extra for this CPU over a less expensive processor paired with the same RTX 4060. The balance makes most sense for someone who also has substantial CPU-heavy work to do.

As a reference point, Tom’s Hardware reported a US promotional listing at $1,549 on January 2, 2024 for a closely matching Strix G16 configuration with the i9-13980HX, RTX 4060, 16GB DDR5, 1TB SSD, and a high-refresh 16-inch display. It is useful contemporaneous context, not proof that the US listing and Chinese preorder were identical. Resolution, brightness, memory layout, warranty, software, accessories, retailer, and return terms can all affect the comparison.
Cooling, power, and battery trade-offs
The launch report described three anti-dust fans, seven heat pipes, 374 cooling fins, Asus’s “Glacier Cooling Architecture 3.0,” and second-generation liquid-metal thermal compound. It also cited up to 140W for the CPU and a 195W total system power figure. These are reported configuration and power claims, not guarantees of sustained output in every mode or workload. Asus’s wider Strix documentation supports the use of multi-fan cooling, heat pipes, and liquid metal on the platform, while some thermal materials and features vary by configuration.
That cooling and power budget is intended to support high performance. The trade-offs to expect from a gaming laptop of this class are fan noise and heat under sustained load, along with much shorter battery life while gaming than during light use. The 90Wh battery is sizable, and USB-C charging can be convenient for travel or lighter tasks, but a 100W USB-C adapter should not be assumed to replace the full-power charger during demanding gameplay. Battery runtime also depends on brightness, refresh rate, GPU mode, background activity, and battery condition.

Was ¥10,499 a good price?
At announcement, the preorder looked broadly competitive with the $1,549 US promotional listing reported the day before, especially on paper. But ¥10,499 converted to roughly $1,478; it did not mean a US buyer could obtain the laptop for $1,478. Shipping, taxes, customs charges, currency-conversion and payment fees, and marketplace markups can erase an apparent gap. Warranty and return costs matter too.

Value also depends on what you need. The i9 is an unusually high-end CPU to pair with an RTX 4060 if gaming is the only priority. The 240Hz, 1600p display, full-power GPU specification, MUX switch, broad port selection, and upgradeable memory and storage can make the package attractive, but only if the exact SKU has the display and expansion options you expect. There is no verified current price for the original preorder configuration here, so ¥10,499 should be treated strictly as its reported historical price.

- Match the complete model number. “ROG Strix G16” is not enough to confirm the GPU wattage, screen, memory, or expansion options.
- Confirm the warranty country. Ask Asus or the seller whether service and parts are covered where you live, and who pays for cross-border shipping.
- Check keyboard and software details. A China-market keyboard layout, Windows language setup, or included software may differ from a local retail model.
- Verify the charger. Check its wattage, connector, plug, and whether a safe local adapter is needed. USB-C charging may be suitable for light use but not full gaming power.
- Calculate the landed price. Include shipping, tax, customs, payment fees, and any return-shipping risk before comparing it with a local laptop.
- Check upgrade specifics. Verify RAM slot arrangement and maximum capacity, M.2 slot count, and whether a second SSD slot is available and empty.
- Get return terms in writing. Dead-pixel, damage, and configuration-mismatch policies are especially important when a cross-border return is costly.
Who this configuration suited
It made the most sense for a China-based buyer with local warranty access who wanted a fast 16-inch screen and also had CPU-heavy work beyond gaming. Competitive players could take advantage of the high refresh rate, while users with suitable workflows could make more use of the i9 than a gaming-only buyer.

It was a weaker fit for someone prioritizing long unplugged gaming sessions, expecting 240fps in demanding games at native resolution, or importing without confirming warranty and regional details. Buyers choosing solely for gaming should compare the total price with machines using a less powerful CPU and the same GPU, as well as newer-generation options available in their market.
Availability now
The January 2024 preorder is a historical offer, not a current listing verified for 2026. Asus’s official pages remain useful for identifying G614 configurations, but they do not confirm that the old ¥10,499 price or the exact preorder SKU is currently available. Check a seller’s live listing and the official regional product page before making a purchase.
