ASUS announced two 31.5-inch WOLED gaming monitors on May 15, 2025: the ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWMG and ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWG. Both combine native 4K gaming with a one-tap competitive mode, but the headline refresh rates are not available at 4K: the XG32UCWMG switches from 4K/240Hz to 1080p/480Hz, while the XG32UCWG switches from 4K/165Hz to 1080p/330Hz.

At a glance

The XG32U models are designed for players who want one large OLED display for both detailed 4K games and high-frame-rate esports titles. Their Dual Mode setting changes the input resolution and refresh-rate target; it does not create two simultaneous displays or deliver 480Hz at native 4K.

What ASUS announced

Both monitors use a 31.5-inch-class, 16:9 WOLED panel with a 3840×2160 native resolution. ASUS markets them with its TrueBlack Glossy display treatment, which combines a glossy optical layer with an anti-reflective stack. ASUS says the coating reduces ambient reflections by 38% compared with previous-generation glossy WOLED panels, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent measurement.

#1 Best Overall
ASUS ROG XG27AQDMG 27 Inch 1440p 240Hz Glossy OLED Gaming Monitor
  • Immersive QHD OLED Display: 26.5-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) glossy WOLED gaming monitor with 240 Hz refresh rate and 0.03 ms response time for immersive gaming
  • Advanced Cooling and OLED Protection: Highly efficient custom heatsink, advanced airflow design, and ASUS OLED Care functions to reduce the risk of burn-in
  • ROG OLED Anti-flicker Technology: ROG-exclusive OLED Anti-flicker technology helps reduce the flicker during refresh-rate fluctuations
  • Third-Generation WOLED Panel: Third-generation WOLED technology provides brighter full white windows, clearer text, and improved motion clarity
  • Uniform Brightness Setting: Optional uniform brightness setting ensures consistent luminance levels across the display

Shared advertised specifications include 99% DCI-P3 coverage, a 0.03ms gray-to-gray response time, 1,000 cd/m² peak HDR brightness, a 1,500,000:1 typical contrast ratio, VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black certification, and support for FreeSync Premium Pro and G-SYNC Compatible variable refresh rate. The brightness, contrast and response figures should be read as ASUS specifications, not as independently measured input latency, sustained HDR brightness or total display-pipeline response.

How Dual Mode works

Dual Mode is an on-screen monitor setting intended for competitive gaming. It changes the display from its native 4K mode to a lower-resolution Full HD mode:

  • XG32UCWMG: 3840×2160 at 240Hz, or 1920×1080 at 480Hz.
  • XG32UCWG: 3840×2160 at 165Hz, or 1920×1080 at 330Hz.

The advantage is flexibility. A visually demanding single-player game can run in native 4K, while a competitive title can use the higher-refresh FHD setting if the system produces enough frames. The trade-off is image sharpness: 1080p spread across a 31.5-inch screen is substantially less detailed than native 4K and is better suited to fast matches than desktop work or text-heavy applications.

A 480Hz setting also does not make a game render at 480 frames per second. GPU performance, CPU speed, game-engine limits and graphics settings determine the actual frame rate. If a system produces only 150 to 250 fps, the benefit of switching to 480Hz may be limited.

XG32UCWMG versus XG32UCWG

ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWMG

The XG32UCWMG is the performance model. Its 4K/240Hz mode is the better fit for buyers with a powerful graphics card who want high-refresh native 4K, while its 1080p/480Hz mode targets esports players who can sustain very high frame rates. The observed U.S. ASUS Store price was $999.

ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWG

The XG32UCWG retains the same general 32-inch WOLED concept but lowers native 4K refresh to 165Hz and the FHD competitive mode to 330Hz. That makes it the value-oriented option for buyers who do not expect to use 4K/240Hz regularly. Its observed U.S. ASUS Store price was $699 on sale, with $799 also displayed as the prior or listed price.

For most buyers, the choice is straightforward: pay more for 4K/240Hz and 1080p/480Hz, or accept 4K/165Hz and 1080p/330Hz in exchange for a lower price. The cheaper model is not automatically better value if a buyer specifically needs native 4K/240Hz.

TrueBlack Glossy, text and HDR considerations

Glossy OLED surfaces can preserve strong perceived contrast and deep blacks, but they remain sensitive to room lighting. A window, lamp or bright object behind the user can still create distracting reflections. ASUS’s 38% reduction claim does not mean the panels are glare-free or equivalent to matte displays in every room. Positioning the monitor away from direct light remains important.

ASUS also describes a Clear Pixel Edge algorithm intended to reduce red-green fringing around text and fine lines. It should not be treated as proof that all OLED text-rendering issues disappear. Results can vary with operating-system scaling, applications, viewing distance and the specific subpixel layout. Text clarity and reflection performance require hands-on testing across those conditions.

The listed 1,000 cd/m² figure is peak HDR brightness, not a promise of sustained full-screen brightness. The announcement and specifications also do not establish real-world HDR behavior, uniformity, firmware quality or whether Dual Mode introduces scaling artifacts.

OLED care and burn-in coverage

Both monitors include ASUS OLED Care Pro features such as pixel refresh, image shifting and logo brightness limitation. These functions are designed to reduce the risk of permanent image retention, not eliminate it.

The Neo Proximity Sensor can dim or black out the display when it detects that the user has moved away and wake it when the user returns. ASUS says its detection distance is customizable. It may be useful for reducing static screen time, but users should be able to adjust or disable it if it causes interruptions during presentations, shared-office use or unusual seating positions.

  • 99% DCI-P3 gamut, true 10-bit colors and Delta E < 2 color difference for amazing HDR performance
  • The exclusive ASUS DisplayWidget Center application allows easy access to the OLED Care Pro features and customization of monitor settings with a mouse

ASUS says the models receive a three-year burn-in warranty, and the U.S. specifications list three-year coverage including panel burn-in. Warranty terms can vary by country and seller. Before buying, verify the regional warranty, authorized-seller requirement, definitions of burn-in and image retention, and whether shipping, replacement and labor are covered. A warranty reduces financial risk; it does not make permanent image retention impossible.

Ports, KVM and desk setup

Each model includes:

  • Two HDMI 2.1 inputs.
  • One DisplayPort 1.4 input with DSC.
  • USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode and 15W Power Delivery.
  • Three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports.
  • Headphone output.
  • Auto KVM support.

DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression supports the listed high-resolution mode, but the source device, GPU and cable must also support the required signal. HDMI 2.1 makes the displays suitable for modern consoles and PCs, although the maximum refresh rate available depends on the connected device and game.

The USB-C connection is useful for video and peripherals, but 15W Power Delivery is not full-power charging for most gaming or workstation laptops. Buyers seeking a laptop-oriented single-cable setup should compare the model’s charging output carefully.

Auto KVM is intended to let one keyboard and mouse control two connected computers. ASUS DisplayWidget Center provides software controls, Auto KVM management and firmware-update functions. ASUS also says the revised stand has a footprint 60% smaller than earlier 32-inch ROG OLED stands. That figure refers to the stand footprint, not a 60% reduction in the entire monitor’s physical size.

Which model should you buy?

Choose the XG32UCWMG if you:

  • Want native 4K at 240Hz.
  • Play both demanding 4K games and competitive esports titles.
  • Have a GPU and CPU capable of taking advantage of very high refresh rates.
  • Specifically want the 1080p/480Hz mode and accept its lower sharpness.
  • Are comfortable with the observed $999 U.S. ASUS Store price.

Choose the XG32UCWG if you:

  • Consider 4K/165Hz sufficient.
  • Want the same general OLED, Dual Mode and connectivity package at a lower observed price.
  • Would rarely sustain 4K/240Hz in your games.
  • Are comfortable using 1080p/330Hz for competitive play.
  • Can purchase it at the advertised $699 sale price or another acceptable live price.

Consider neither if you:

  • Need native 4K above 240Hz.
  • Require substantial USB-C laptop charging.
  • Dislike glossy displays or use the monitor directly opposite a bright window.
  • Spend most of your time in text-heavy productivity applications and are highly sensitive to OLED fringing.
  • Want an ultrawide display or a product designed primarily around console use.

Alternatives in ASUS’s lineup

These are comparison points rather than a complete market roundup:

  • ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDP: another 32-inch WOLED dual-mode monitor. ASUS lists 90W USB-C Power Delivery, making it more suitable for laptop-focused setups than the XG32U models’ 15W output.
  • ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM: a smaller 27-inch 4K QD-OLED monitor with 240Hz, but without the XG32U’s dedicated 1080p high-refresh mode.
  • ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3: a premium 32-inch 4K tandem QD-OLED model with DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR20. ASUS’s U.S. comparison page showed a $1,299 price signal, which should be checked before purchase.
  • ROG Strix XG27UCG Gen2 and XG27UCGR: smaller Fast IPS dual-mode options for buyers who prioritize speed and potentially lower OLED burn-in concerns over OLED contrast and black levels.

What the announcement does not prove

ASUS’s announcement establishes the advertised features and specifications, but not independent real-world performance. There is no basis here to claim measured input latency, sustained HDR brightness, uniformity, fan or cooling noise, sensor reliability, firmware quality, long-term burn-in behavior, text-fringing severity in every application, or the exact scaling quality of Dual Mode. Those factors should be evaluated through independent testing before treating either display as definitively best.

Bottom line

The XG32U pair is compelling if you want a large OLED display that can alternate between detailed 4K gaming and a specialized high-refresh esports mode. The XG32UCWMG is the one to buy for 4K/240Hz and 1080p/480Hz; the XG32UCWG is the more affordable choice when 4K/165Hz and 1080p/330Hz are enough. In both cases, remember the central limitation: the fastest mode is Full HD, not 4K.
