The ASUS ROG Strix Radeon RX Vega 64 OC is a capable but power-hungry 2017 graphics card whose custom cooler and connectivity matter more than its small factory-overclock advantage. In 2026, it is best considered only as a tested, low-priced used card: historical reviews raised real questions about sustained thermals, and newer GPUs generally offer a stronger case for efficiency and current features.
What is the ASUS ROG Strix RX Vega 64 OC?
The ROG-STRIX-RXVEGA64-O8G-GAMING is ASUS’s custom version of AMD’s Vega 10-based Radeon RX Vega 64. Some listings and units use AREZ-STRIX-RXVEGA64-O8G-GAMING branding. The card pairs 4,096 stream processors with 8GB of HBM2 over a 2,048-bit memory interface. Its advertised OC-mode boost clock is 1,590MHz; actual clocks vary with workload, temperature, power limits and BIOS behavior.

ASUS’s support page for the model provides documentation and related resources. Product specifications and listing details are also available from Newegg’s product page. The card is large—about 11.7 inches long—so check the actual unit and case clearance rather than relying on a listing alone.
What does the Strix version add?
Its main distinction from a reference RX Vega 64 is the custom board and feature set: a large triple-fan cooler, backplate, RGB lighting, FanConnect II headers for chassis fans, and a port mix that includes two HDMI outputs and DVI-D. Those connections can be useful in an older multi-display setup.

The factory overclock is not a major performance upgrade. Tom’s Hardware found only a slight lead over the reference card, too small to transform the gaming experience. Its review also reported a 1,630MHz boost reading in one sample, illustrating that observed boost behavior can exceed an advertised clock under particular conditions—not that every card will sustain that speed. See Tom’s Hardware’s review and Techtesters’ review.
How does it perform in games?
1080p and 1440p
In its 2017 review period, the RX Vega 64 delivered strong 1080p performance and was often a natural fit for 1440p gaming. Vega could fare relatively well in DirectX 12 and Vulkan titles, while results against GeForce competitors varied by game and API. Historical results should not be treated as a promise for current games: performance depends on the game version, driver, settings and system.
4K and demanding games
It can run selected games at 4K with adjusted settings, but it is not a dependable 4K-at-60-fps ultra card. TechRadar recorded 155fps in Battlefield 1 at 1080p and 69fps at 4K in its period testing; those are results for that title and test setup, not universal figures for today’s games. The review is at TechRadar.

Do not assume it universally beats or loses to the GeForce GTX 1080: rankings depended on the game and API. Nor should 8GB of HBM2 be treated as equivalent to the same capacity of newer memory in every workload. Later used cards such as the RX 5700 XT, RTX 2060 Super, RX 6600 XT, RX 6700 XT and RX 6800 are reasonable comparison points, but their relative value depends on current local prices and condition. Without controlled, current benchmarks, a precise 2026 performance ranking would be misleading.

Does the cooler keep the card cool and quiet?
The triple-fan cooler can be quiet in suitable conditions and uses semi-passive fan behavior at low load. But historical test results differ, and a single GPU-core reading cannot establish that the HBM, hotspot and voltage regulators are also operating comfortably. Case airflow, fan curve, ambient temperature, workload and BIOS all affect the outcome.
| Review finding | What the lab reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| GPU temperature | TechRadar recorded a maximum of 89°C under load. | That lab’s sample and test setup; not a guaranteed temperature for every card. |
| Noise | Tom’s Hardware measured 34.8dB(A) on an open bench and 38.3dB(A) in a closed-case simulation. | Results depend on its measurement method and test conditions; they are not directly interchangeable with another lab’s readings. |
| Thermal behavior | Guru3D reported thermal throttling concerns and said repasting reduced load temperature by about 3°C on its sample. | Sample-specific observation, not a general repair instruction. |

VRM and long-duration thermals
Tom’s Hardware described a concern that heat from the voltage regulators could migrate beneath the GPU package after extended operation, particularly with elevated power limits. User reports also describe high VRM temperatures, but anecdotes are not controlled measurements and do not prove that every Strix Vega 64 is defective. Production revision, BIOS, thermal-pad condition, airflow and workload may change the result. Tom’s Hardware’s discussion appears in its thermal analysis and extended power and thermal discussion.
Guru3D also noted that ASUS believed its review sample may have had the wrong BIOS and asked that the review be taken down before results were republished. That context helps explain conflicting historical impressions; it does not erase the need to check the particular used card. See Guru3D’s review.

How much power does it need?
Vega 64’s high power draw is one of its biggest disadvantages beside newer cards with similar or greater gaming performance. Keep board power separate from whole-system power: TechRadar measured up to 440W for its complete system under stress, not for the graphics card alone. Tom’s Hardware reported more than 330W in its test while applying a 50% higher power limit during manual overclocking. These figures describe different test conditions and should not be compared as though they were the same measurement.

The card has two 8-pin PCIe power connectors. Where possible, feed them with two separate PCIe cables from a quality PSU rather than one daisy-chained lead. TechRadar reported that using two separate cables resolved restart problems in its test; that is useful troubleshooting evidence, not a guarantee that every restart has the same cause. The publication recommended at least a 600W PSU for its system, but that is not a universal requirement: CPU, overclocking, PSU quality and the rest of the build matter. ASUS provides broader, system-level guidance in its PSU recommendation table.
Is overclocking worthwhile?
The factory OC mode offers a modest uplift, not a compelling reason on its own to pay extra over another healthy RX Vega 64. Raising the power limit can increase consumption and heat without ensuring higher sustained clocks, especially if thermal limits intervene. A carefully tested undervolt may improve efficiency, noise or sustained clock behavior, but it is a tuning possibility—not a guaranteed fix for poor cooler contact or VRM cooling.
AMD Radeon Software is the relevant place for driver installation, monitoring and tuning; ASUS’s legacy support page also lists GPU Tweak documentation. Because this is an older product and software labels can change, consult the current software rather than relying on old menu-path instructions. During testing, log GPU, hotspot, HBM and VRM temperatures where exposed, along with board power, sustained clock, fan speed and any driver resets.

How to evaluate a used card
Ask the seller for clear photos of the model label, ports, power connectors and cooler condition, plus the BIOS version if available. Confirm the physical outputs and card length against the actual unit. Prefer a seller who permits testing or offers a meaningful return period; “refurbished” does not by itself establish who performed the work or what warranty applies. A Newegg refurbished listing, for example, is not automatically equivalent to manufacturer-refurbished stock.
- Check that the card is the expected ROG or AREZ model and has two 8-pin power connectors.
- Inspect fans and heatsink for damage, severe dust buildup or signs of cooler removal; do not disassemble it just to inspect thermal pads.
- Test every display output you need, and verify that all three fans behave normally at low and high load.
- With current monitoring software, observe GPU, hotspot, HBM and VRM readings if available, plus board power, clock and fan speed.
- Run a sustained game or benchmark for at least 15–30 minutes. Watch for artifacts, black screens, driver timeouts, system restarts, unusual fan noise or falling clocks under load.
- Use a suitable, quality PSU and two independent PCIe power cables where possible; remove aggressive overclocks before diagnosing instability.
- Ask about BIOS changes, prior repair and mining history, while recognizing that seller answers cannot replace a stress test or return option.
Do not repaste a card casually because one historical lab saw a temperature drop after doing so. Cooler disassembly can affect warranty status, thermal-pad placement and mounting pressure; incorrect pad thickness or contact can make cooling worse or damage the card.
Should you buy it in 2026?
Buy only if this specific unit is clearly cheaper than more efficient alternatives, passes testing, and suits a system with adequate power delivery and airflow. The unusual combination of DVI-D, dual HDMI and DisplayPort may matter for a particular display setup, but it does not outweigh a poor price or uncertain condition.
| Buyer situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Existing owner with a stable card | Keep using it if performance, temperatures and power draw suit your needs; replacing a working card is not automatically worthwhile. |
| Used bargain hunter | Consider only at a genuinely low price, with successful sustained testing and a return option. |
| New PC builder | Usually choose a newer card for efficiency, current media features and longer practical relevance. |
| Small-form-factor build | Avoid unless the case explicitly supports this card’s length, thickness and cooling needs. |
| Multi-display user with older screens | Check that the actual card has the specific outputs required and that they work. |
| Overclocker | Proceed only with close sensor monitoring, stable power and strong case airflow. |
As of August 18, 2026, one Newegg marketplace listing showed the card at $574. That is an isolated listing, not a fair-market valuation or sensible target price. A newer Radeon RX 7800 XT or RX 9070 family card is a more relevant modern replacement class for buyers seeking current features; compare current local prices and independent benchmarks rather than assuming a fixed performance-per-dollar result. AMD’s product pages cover the RX 7800 XT and RX 9070.
