ASUS introduced the ROG Tessen mobile controller around the ROG Phone 8 series reveal at CES 2024, but the two products did not have a confirmed simultaneous retail launch. ASUS announced Tessen availability on May 13, 2024. It is a foldable, wired USB-C controller for Android phones, including the ROG Phone 8 series.
When did the ROG Tessen launch?
The original “launch alongside” wording appeared in a December 2023 report about a possible controller reveal. ASUS then included the Tessen in its ROG Phone 8-era lineup at CES 2024, and later announced the controller as available on May 13, 2024. The timeline supports an introduction alongside the phone’s launch-era announcements, not a claim that both went on sale on the same day. The December report, ASUS’s CES announcement and its availability announcement mark those stages.

What is the ROG Tessen?
The Tessen is a telescopic controller that clamps around a phone in landscape orientation and connects directly through USB-C. ASUS positions it as a way to play compatible Android games with handheld-style physical controls. It is not exclusive to ROG phones: ASUS lists Android compatibility more broadly, subject to the phone’s dimensions, USB-C alignment and other physical constraints.
Its defining feature is a hinge that lets the controller fold for storage. ASUS says the folded packaging can also be used as a stand. The controller weighs 136 g and measures 191.5 × 92 × 40 mm when open, or 94 × 92 × 85 mm folded. That makes it easier to pack than a conventional full-size gamepad, though the combined phone-and-controller setup is still a substantial handheld.

ASUS equips it with mechanical face buttons and D-pad switches, two programmable aluminum rear paddles, Aura RGB lighting and joysticks with a stated 22-degree movement range. The right analog stick is 18 mm tall. Rubber support pads and an extended USB-C connector are intended to accommodate some phones with protective cases; that does not mean every case will fit.
Wired connection and charging
USB-C makes the connection direct, without Bluetooth pairing or a separate wireless-controller battery. ASUS advertises a 500 Hz polling rate, but that is a manufacturer specification, not an independent latency test; a wired connection does not mean zero latency. The controller’s second USB-C port supports up to 18 W of pass-through charging. Actual charging speed depends on the phone, battery state, cable and adapter, and the figure should not be confused with the phone’s maximum charging rate.

Controls and Armoury Crate
Armoury Crate can be used to remap buttons and configure the rear paddles, lighting and ROG Button. ASUS also describes assigning functions such as taking screenshots, recording gameplay, changing lighting or opening Armoury Crate. Availability of these software features can depend on the phone, app and software version; they do not guarantee universal mapping in every game.
Does it fit the ROG Phone 8?
ASUS presents the Tessen as an accessory for the ROG Phone 8. The series is listed at 163.8 × 76.8 × 8.9 mm, within the controller’s stated phone limits of up to 7 inches and 7–14.5 mm thick. Those published dimensions support compatibility, though fit also depends on port alignment and the shape of the specific phone and case. ASUS describes the ROG Phone 8 as a slimmer, more general-purpose flagship that retains gaming features; the Tessen adds handheld controls without making the phone a different class of device. Cases, protrusions and other accessories
Some cases may work within the published thickness range, but rings, straps, bulky camera protection or rugged construction can prevent the controller from closing or the connector from aligning. A phone that meets the thickness specification can still be awkward if its USB-C port or chassis features interfere. Do not assume the Tessen can be used at the same time as a rear-mounted AeroActive Cooler: ASUS documentation cited here does not confirm that combination.

Games with native Android controller support are the most straightforward choice. A USB-C connection alone does not make every mobile game recognize gamepad input. ASUS lists supported games on its product page, but game support and software behavior can change with updates. Check the specific game and the current Armoury Crate capabilities before buying if one title is the main reason you want the controller.

Price and who should consider it
As of October 3, 2026, ASUS’s U.S. product page lists the Tessen at $129.99. Other ASUS page captures have shown lower figures, including $79.99 and $109.99; those may reflect temporary or page-specific pricing, not a dependable standard price. Regional stock and pricing can differ. Check the U.S. ASUS store listing for the current offer.
- Consider it if you use Android, want a foldable wired controller, and value mechanical controls, rear paddles and charging while playing.
- Look elsewhere if you need iPhone support, rely on a game without controller support, or want a controller that avoids phone-fit and USB-C alignment constraints.
- Check your setup first if you use a thick or protruding case, ring or strap holder, or rear-mounted phone cooler.
The Tessen was a real part of the ROG Phone 8 launch-era lineup, but its appeal extends to Android users beyond that phone family. Its strongest case is for players who want a compact, folding wired controller and accept the limits of game-by-game support and physical fit.
