ASUS’s redesigned ROG XG Mobile is a compact external GPU and docking station built around an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU—not the desktop RTX 5090. Announced at CES on January 7, 2025, it replaces ASUS’s proprietary XG Mobile connector with Thunderbolt 5, supports selected Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 systems, and can deliver up to 140W of host charging. It is best viewed as a premium desk-side upgrade for compatible laptops and handhelds, not as a universal desktop replacement.
What ASUS changed
The 2025 ROG XG Mobile, part of ASUS’s GC34 family, is the company’s first XG Mobile model using Thunderbolt 5. ASUS markets it as the first eGPU to feature the connection, although that “first” claim should be understood as ASUS’s product positioning rather than an independently established worldwide ranking.

Unlike earlier XG Mobile units, the new model uses a standard Thunderbolt 5 USB-C connection instead of ASUS’s proprietary connector. That broadens potential compatibility, but it does not make every USB-C, USB4, or Thunderbolt laptop compatible. Host BIOS support, PCIe tunneling, port wiring, firmware, and operating-system requirements still matter.
The enclosure is also a dock. It combines the GPU with display outputs, USB ports, Ethernet, an SD card reader, and laptop charging. ASUS says the new enclosure and vapor-chamber cooling system are smaller than the previous generation; its claims of increased cooling surface area and reduced size should be treated as manufacturer claims rather than independent test results.

The RTX 5090 clarification matters
The top model contains an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. It is not the desktop GeForce RTX 5090 and should not be compared directly with desktop RTX 5090 reviews.

The GPU is integrated into the enclosure rather than installed in a conventional, replaceable eGPU slot. That helps ASUS make the unit compact, but it removes the upgrade path offered by a standard eGPU enclosure with a replaceable desktop graphics card.
Actual performance will vary with the host’s CPU, Thunderbolt or USB4 implementation, BIOS and drivers, power mode, game engine, and whether the game is displayed on the laptop’s internal panel or an external monitor.

Thunderbolt 5 provides up to 80Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth for general data. Its Bandwidth Boost mode can provide up to 120Gbps in one direction for display-heavy workloads. The often-repeated “120Gbps eGPU” description is therefore misleading: 120Gbps is not a guarantee that the GPU receives 120Gbps of usable PCIe bandwidth.
Protocol overhead, PCIe tunneling, display traffic, the host controller, and the laptop’s implementation all affect eGPU performance. Thunderbolt 5 is a more capable connection than Thunderbolt 4, but it does not turn an external mobile GPU into a desktop graphics card.
ASUS says a suitable Thunderbolt 5 system can support 8K output and up to three 4K displays at 144Hz. Those limits depend on the host, display chain, connection type, and available bandwidth. ASUS also says the downstream Thunderbolt 5 port can daisy-chain up to three Thunderbolt 5 monitors, or up to two monitors when the host uses Thunderbolt 4 or USB4.
Ports, charging, and docking features

The 140W charging figure requires a host that supports USB PD 3.1 EPR, connection through the upstream computer port, and enough power remaining after other peripherals draw power. Connecting several high-power devices can reduce the wattage available to the laptop.

For gaming, connecting a monitor directly to the XG Mobile’s HDMI or DisplayPort output is generally preferable. It avoids sending rendered frames back through the host connection to the laptop’s internal display, where additional bandwidth and latency costs can apply. This is a general eGPU principle, not a guaranteed performance improvement of a fixed percentage.
Compatibility: Thunderbolt 5 does not mean universal USB-C support
ASUS says the 2025 XG Mobile supports Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, and USB4 systems, subject to the host’s implementation. It does not support Thunderbolt 3 or earlier, USB 3.2, or arbitrary USB-C ports without the required PCIe tunneling and system support.
ASUS recommends an x86/x64 processor for best compatibility and requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later for the RTX 50-series graphics support path. The company’s live compatibility and support guide should be treated as the final authority because supported models and minimum BIOS versions can change.

These are product families, not blanket approvals for every configuration. Check the exact model number and BIOS requirement in ASUS’s current table before buying.

ASUS notes that some Intel Lunar Lake laptops with two Thunderbolt 4 ports may support an eGPU correctly through only one port. For certain Core Ultra 7 systems, ASUS advises using the Thunderbolt 4 port next to HDMI. If the XG Mobile is not detected, trying the other port is not always the right fix; consult the host-specific instructions first.
BIOS, memory resources, and software requirements
ASUS says the XG Mobile may require the system BIOS to reserve at least 128GB of prefetchable memory during boot. Without the required resource allocation, the eGPU may fail to appear or may perform poorly.
- Identify the laptop or handheld’s exact model number.
- Compare its BIOS version with ASUS’s live compatibility table.
- Install the required BIOS update.
- Confirm that Windows 11 24H2 or later is installed.
- Update Armoury Crate or Armoury Crate SE.
- Use the included certified Thunderbolt 5 cable.
- Connect the cable to the XG Mobile’s upstream “connect to computer” port.
ASUS specifies Armoury Crate version 6.1.18 or later, or Armoury Crate SE version 2.0.10 or later. On ASUS gaming laptops, connect the powered XG Mobile, open Armoury Crate, choose Home, then select ROG XG Mobile (GC34) under Device. For non-ASUS gaming laptops, ASUS directs users to the Armoury Crate Dashboard and the XG Mobile device entry. Menu names may change as ASUS updates its software.
Availability and price
ASUS announced the XG Mobile at CES on January 7, 2025, but retail availability came later, with global availability reported in late 2025.

The RTX 5090 model was originally announced at $2,199.99. Notebookcheck later reported a US price of $2,499.99 in its October 31, 2025 availability report. ASUS’s US product page has displayed $1,299.99, but that appears to be a general or starting listing and should not be treated as the confirmed price of the RTX 5090 configuration without checking the selected GPU and retailer.
At roughly $2,500, the RTX 5090 version competes with complete gaming laptops that include their own display, CPU, memory, storage, battery, and chassis. The exact configuration and current regional price are therefore central to the buying decision.

The XG Mobile is not detected
Check Windows 11 24H2 or later, the host BIOS version, the 128GB prefetchable-memory requirement, Armoury Crate version, the correct upstream port, and the laptop’s supported-port guidance. On some systems, only one Thunderbolt port works correctly.
Performance is lower than expected
Connect the host’s original power adapter, update ASUS and NVIDIA drivers, use the recommended power mode, and connect the gaming monitor directly to the XG Mobile. Performance can also be limited by the host CPU, the Thunderbolt or USB4 controller, display traffic, and the game itself.
The laptop does not charge at 140W
Confirm USB PD 3.1 EPR support, use the upstream computer connection, and disconnect power-hungry peripherals. The advertised maximum is conditional, not a guarantee for every compatible host.
The connection is intermittent
Use the included Thunderbolt 5 cable. A generic USB-C cable may fit physically but lack the required capabilities. ASUS also recommends reconnecting both the Thunderbolt cable and the XG Mobile’s power cable if the connection or lighting fails.
Who should buy the ROG XG Mobile?
It makes the most sense for someone who already owns a compatible premium laptop or handheld and wants a single desk-side performance station. ROG Ally X owners, ultraportable users, and creators who need GPU acceleration can gain a powerful dock without carrying a desktop tower or buying a second complete computer.
The compact integrated design, modern display outputs, fast networking, SD card reader, and host charging are meaningful advantages over a conventional eGPU enclosure, graphics card, and external power supply assembled separately.
Who should skip it?
- Buyers starting from zero who can purchase a complete gaming laptop for similar money
- Anyone expecting desktop RTX 5090 performance
- Users with only Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.x, or unsupported USB-C connectivity
- Buyers who want to replace or upgrade the graphics card later
- Desktop owners who can install a faster or more affordable internal GPU
- Anyone unwilling to manage BIOS updates, firmware, drivers, Armoury Crate, and eGPU troubleshooting
A conventional eGPU enclosure has more upgrade flexibility, while a desktop PC offers better long-term upgradeability and often better value for stationary gaming. An older proprietary XG Mobile is relevant only to compatible legacy ROG Flow systems and is not interchangeable with the 2025 Thunderbolt model.
Verdict
The 2025 ROG XG Mobile is a strong niche product, not a universal RTX 5090 solution. Thunderbolt 5 makes ASUS’s compact eGPU more broadly useful than its proprietary predecessors, and the integrated dock is genuinely convenient. But the key facts remain decisive: the GPU is a non-upgradeable 150W RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, compatibility is selective, setup depends on BIOS and software support, and the top configuration can cost as much as a complete gaming laptop.
For an owner of a supported ROG Ally X, Flow laptop, or ultraportable who wants one compact desk setup, it can be compelling. For a new buyer seeking maximum performance per dollar or a future-proof GPU upgrade path, a complete gaming laptop, desktop, or replaceable-card eGPU enclosure is usually the more rational direction.
