ASUS announced the AMD-powered ROG Zephyrus G16 (2024), model family GA605, on June 3, 2024. It pairs AMD’s 12-core Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 with an Nvidia RTX 4060 or RTX 4070 Laptop GPU in the redesigned 16-inch G16 chassis. This is a platform refresh of the 2024 laptop, not a wholly new generation—and the “AI” NPU is not a gaming-performance upgrade by itself.
What launched, and how does GA605 differ from GU605?
The GA605 identifies the AMD version of the 2024 Zephyrus G16. The Intel-based 2024 models use the GU605 family. ASUS introduced the broad 2024 G16 redesign at CES, then announced the AMD GA605 later that year. The two share the same general slim, premium design direction, but their processors and some configuration details differ. When comparing listings, check the full model number rather than relying on a shortened “Zephyrus G16” name. A GA605 listing is the one to look for if you specifically want the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.

ASUS lists the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 with 12 CPU cores, 24 threads, and boost speeds up to 5.1GHz. It also includes Radeon 890M integrated graphics and an AMD XDNA NPU rated for up to 50 TOPS. That combination gives the laptop CPU resources for demanding multitasking and creation work, integrated graphics for lighter tasks, and dedicated hardware for supported AI workloads. TOPS describes the NPU’s stated processing capability; it is not a benchmark for game frame rates or proof that every AI application will run faster. NPU benefits depend on operating-system features, application support, drivers, and rollout timing. In demanding games, the discrete RTX GPU is generally the more important graphics processor; ASUS notes that feature availability can vary on the product page.
Configurations and specifications
ASUS’s US launch announcement described Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 configurations with RTX 4060 or RTX 4070 Laptop graphics. The broader specification page describes the platform’s maximum options; it does not mean every combination is sold in every country.

The display resolution is 2560×1600—often described as 2.5K—and its 240Hz refresh rate suits fast games. Rendering demanding titles at native resolution can still tax an RTX 4060, so settings reductions or DLSS may be useful. OLED brings high contrast, rich color, and quick response, but buyers should also weigh glossy reflections and the general long-term burn-in risk of OLED panels.
What stayed from the 2024 G16 redesign?
The AMD model keeps the redesign’s CNC-machined aluminum chassis, slim 16-inch format, OLED screen, 90Wh battery, and three-fan cooling system with liquid metal, heat pipes, and Arc Flow fans. ASUS lists Slash Lighting on the GA605 rather than the Intel model’s Anime Matrix-style exterior treatment. The laptop’s combination of a large OLED screen, discrete graphics, and a roughly 1.85kg chassis is the central appeal: it is easier to carry than many performance-focused gaming machines while still offering a capable gaming GPU. Its thinness also places limits on cooling and sustained power, so it should not be judged as if it were a thicker laptop with unrestricted GPU power.
What do independent reviews say about performance?
Reviews broadly praised the G16’s display, build quality, portability, and all-round capability. PC Gamer described the GA605 as a compelling thin gaming laptop, while Notebookcheck found improvements over earlier Meteor Lake versions in some respects and noted that the underlying design remained similar. These assessments support the idea of a balanced premium machine, not a generational leap in every workload.
Windows Central reported a Procyon Windows ML score of 126 for its Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 review sample and characterized the result as unusually strong in that benchmark. It is a single review configuration and test, not a promise of equivalent performance across AI applications.

For gaming, the RTX 4060-versus-RTX 4070 choice is likely to matter more than the NPU rating. Results also depend on the game, resolution, graphics settings, DLSS use, power mode, and whether the laptop is plugged in. The Ryzen CPU does not guarantee a dramatic frame-rate advantage over the Intel GU605 in every title.

Thermals, noise, and battery use
A thin chassis trades some sustained thermal headroom for portability. The Verge reported thermal throttling at approximately 95°C on its AMD review unit under load; that observation belongs to that sample and its software configuration, not a universal temperature limit for every GA605. Under demanding work, expect fan noise and performance behavior to depend on the selected mode and workload.
Battery life is similarly workload- and setup-dependent. RTX GPU activity, Armoury Crate performance mode, screen brightness and refresh rate, BIOS and driver versions, peripherals, and graphics-mode switching can all change results. The Verge’s review described configuration sensitivity, including difficulty switching graphics modes in its test. Gaming on battery should not be expected to match plugged-in performance.
Upgradeability and ownership trade-offs
LPDDR5X memory is onboard, so buyers should choose enough RAM for the laptop’s intended lifespan rather than count on a later memory upgrade. ASUS also specifies that the second SSD slot is limited to PCIe 4.0 ×2; users planning a second drive should not assume it will run at the same link speed as a full ×4 slot. Confirm the exact storage layout and capacity in the model-specific listing.
Regional configurations differ. GPU, RAM, SSD, Windows edition, color, warranty, and even listed connectivity may vary, so two laptops described as Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 GA605 models are not necessarily equivalent. The RTINGS review of the Intel GU605 offers useful coverage of the broader G16 design’s display, construction, keyboard, ports, battery, thermals, and gaming behavior, but its measured configuration should not be treated as an AMD GA605 test.
Launch price and availability
In its US announcement, ASUS said the AMD G16 would be available through the ASUS online store and Best Buy, starting at $1,899.99. That is the historical US launch price, not a verified current price or stock status. The US launch announcement records the original price and retailers. Because this is a 2024 model, assess any current listing against newer laptops and the exact GPU configuration rather than treating the launch price as a present-day value benchmark.

- You expect desktop-like sustained performance from a thin laptop or prioritize long unplugged gaming sessions.
- A newer laptop with a materially faster GPU is priced similarly.
- The Intel GU605 is substantially cheaper with otherwise matching GPU, memory, and storage, or your software specifically favors Intel.
- You want a matte LCD and prefer to avoid general OLED reflection and burn-in considerations.

- Verify the full model number begins with GA605, not the Intel GU605.
- Confirm whether the GPU is an RTX 4060 or RTX 4070, and compare that before focusing on the CPU label.
- Check installed memory and SSD capacity; onboard RAM is not a routine upgrade.
- Confirm the precise display, operating system, ports, color, warranty, and regional SKU.
- Compare the current asking price with newer machines; the $1,899.99 figure was ASUS’s US launch price in 2024, not a current deal quote.
