ASUS ROG’s March 31, 2025, teaser was a genuine preview of an Xbox-branded handheld partnership, but it was not a full product reveal. The brief, deliberately obscured trailer hinted at an ROG Ally and Xbox controller coming together; Microsoft and ASUS later announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. Both launched on October 16, 2025, as Windows gaming handheld PCs—not portable Xbox Series consoles.
What ASUS ROG’s teaser showed
The roughly 34-second animated trailer began with an ROG Ally X and a custom Xbox-style controller. The two were thrown into a tube or machine and combined, suggesting a new handheld. Smoke, lighting and animation kept the resulting device largely hidden. A robot at a monitor then displayed four phrases: “Marathon stamina,” “More capacity,” “Faster speeds” and “Fresh look!” The trailer’s imagery and on-screen clues pointed toward a redesigned ROG handheld with an Xbox connection, but did not establish its final appearance or specifications.
In particular, the teaser did not give a product name, processor, screen size, battery capacity, storage, price or release date. “More capacity” and “Faster speeds” were broad hints, not measurable promises: they did not identify which components or features had changed.

The Xbox-styled controller and the direct ROG-plus-Xbox visual were strong clues, and the Xbox account responded publicly to the teaser. Reports before and around its release had also described Microsoft working with a PC gaming hardware maker on an Xbox-branded handheld. Taken together, those signs made a partnership a reasonable interpretation—but the trailer itself stopped short of a formal product announcement.

Some early reporting linked the project to the codename Project Kennan. That was a reported codename, not the retail name announced by Microsoft and ASUS. The finished products were named ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X.
From teaser to launch: the confirmed timeline
- March 31, 2025: ASUS ROG publishes the teaser, showing an ROG Ally X and Xbox-style controller being combined while concealing the new device.
- June 8, 2025: Microsoft and ASUS officially reveal the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X at the Xbox Games Showcase. The initial announcement gives a 2025 holiday launch window, with pricing and preorder details to come. Microsoft’s announcement confirms the two model names and the collaboration.
- August 20, 2025: Xbox announces an October 16 release date and additional details, including its Handheld Compatibility Program. The release-date announcement set the launch day.
- September 25–26, 2025: Preorders begin in selected markets; participating countries and retailers vary.
- October 16, 2025: The handhelds become available, with practical availability depending on region and retailer.
What the announced handhelds actually are
The ROG Xbox Ally models are ASUS-made Windows gaming handheld PCs developed with Microsoft. They run Windows 11 and add an Xbox-oriented full-screen experience and Xbox-integrated controls, including an Xbox button. Their appeal is a more console-like way to navigate a handheld while retaining access to a broader PC gaming environment, including games and launchers beyond the Xbox Store. ASUS describes the devices and their features on its ROG Xbox Ally product page.

That distinction matters: Xbox branding does not make either model a portable Xbox Series console, and it does not mean every Xbox console game can be installed and played locally. Local play depends on a compatible Windows PC version; Xbox Play Anywhere applies to supported titles; cloud gaming streams supported games over a network; and Remote Play streams from a player’s own Xbox console. A game’s availability depends on its platform version and service. Xbox Cloud Gaming also requires a supported device, game and qualifying Game Pass subscription; Game Pass is separate from the handheld purchase.

The official reveal confirmed AMD Ryzen Z2-series hardware across the new product family. ASUS lists the standard ROG Xbox Ally with a Ryzen Z2 A processor and a 7-inch Full HD 120Hz display with FreeSync Premium. Check each model’s specification page for its exact components rather than assuming every feature is identical across the Ally and Ally X. The teaser’s phrases should not be read as a one-to-one specification list, and manufacturer performance language is not independent testing.

U.S. prices and release date
Both models launched on October 16, 2025. ASUS’s U.S. product pages list the ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99 and the ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99. Is it just an ROG Ally with an Xbox logo?
It is fair to see hardware continuity: these remain part of ASUS’s ROG Ally handheld family, and the teaser itself used an Ally X as its starting point. But calling them only an existing Ally with a logo misses the intended changes. ASUS and Microsoft presented redesigned ergonomics, Xbox-focused controls and software, a dedicated full-screen experience, handheld compatibility work for PC games and new Ryzen Z2-series hardware. The practical difference is a Windows handheld with a more Xbox-centered interface, not a transition to Xbox-console hardware.

Who should consider one?
- Xbox and Game Pass players: Consider it if you want a portable Windows device for supported PC games and Xbox services. Check which of your games have PC versions or cloud support, and remember that a subscription may be required for some services.
- PC handheld players: The Xbox interface may make navigation feel more console-like, but these remain Windows PCs. If you depend on Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net or other launchers, consider whether the Xbox layer improves your routine or simply adds another interface.
- Existing ROG Ally owners: The Xbox-branded models are not automatically the only route to handheld software improvements. Do not assume every new feature will reach older Ally devices; check ASUS and Microsoft support information for the specific model and feature.
- Buyers comparing models: The standard Ally costs less; the Ally X is the premium option for buyers who value its higher-end configuration and endurance enough to pay more. Battery life in any handheld varies with the game, power mode, brightness, frame rate and connectivity, so avoid choosing on an unsupported fixed-hours promise.
Comfort is personal, and higher performance can also mean more power use, heat, fan noise or battery drain. Consider the games you actually play, the storefronts you use, the price difference and whether you need local play, cloud streaming or Remote Play. Neither Xbox branding nor a compatibility label guarantees that every title will behave identically to a console version.
The takeaway from the teaser
The March 2025 trailer was not an April Fools’ fake or a complete hardware reveal: it was an intentionally cryptic signal of a real ASUS-Microsoft collaboration. That signal ultimately became two retail products, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. The important qualification is what they are: Xbox-branded Windows gaming handhelds with Xbox software and services, not handheld Xbox Series consoles.
