Why Windows is looking for aszshlext64.dll

Fix 1: Identify the Ashampoo ZIP installation
Before changing anything, confirm which application is producing the error.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select the Processes or Details tab.
- Look for Ashampoo ZIP, Ashampoo ZIP Pro, or another Ashampoo ZIP-branded process.
- If the message appears while using File Explorer, note whether it occurs during right-click actions or folder navigation.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Ashampoo ZIP, Ashampoo ZIP Pro, or Ashampoo ZIP Business.
If the error appears only in File Explorer, the shell extension is probably the failing component. If Ashampoo ZIP itself will not start, repair the complete application rather than trying to fix the DLL alone.
To check for a file that remains on disk:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
aszshlext64.dll. - Right-click any result and select Open file location.
- Check whether the path is inside an Ashampoo installation folder.
A matching filename is not proof that a file is genuine. Treat a copy in a temporary folder, download folder, or unrelated application directory as suspicious until it is checked.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the relevant Ashampoo ZIP product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Open File Explorer and test the action that previously produced the error.
Some desktop programs do not expose Advanced options or Repair in Settings. In that case, use Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Ashampoo ZIP product.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, depending on what the installer displays.
- Complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the error disappears, the installation or its Explorer registration was damaged. If repair fails, continue with a clean reinstall.

Fix 3: Reinstall Ashampoo ZIP from Ashampoo
Use the official Ashampoo ZIP product page or the installer associated with your license and product edition. The current ZIP Pro 4 download is listed by Ashampoo as version 4.70.01, with an installer named ashampoo_zip_pro_4_sm.exe.
Do not mix files from ZIP Free, ZIP Pro, ZIP Business, or different releases.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the Ashampoo ZIP product that matches the error.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Download the installer from Ashampoo’s official product page.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install the same product edition where possible.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Ashampoo ZIP and File Explorer.
If the normal uninstaller is unavailable:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Select the Ashampoo product.
- Choose Uninstall or Change.
- Complete the removal process.
- Restart before reinstalling.
If you no longer use Ashampoo ZIP, a complete uninstall may be the correct fix. A leftover Explorer registration can continue calling the missing DLL after the main program has been removed. Reinstalling and then uninstalling through the product’s own installer can remove that registration more cleanly than deleting files manually.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection History
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined the DLL.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry associated with Ashampoo ZIP or
aszshlext64.dll. - Confirm the detected file’s full path.
- Compare it with the Ashampoo installation directory.
Only restore or allow the file if the installer came from Ashampoo and the path belongs to the genuine installation. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause another detection. If the alert remains, scan the installer and the computer rather than repeatedly restoring the DLL.
After a confirmed quarantine, reinstall Ashampoo ZIP from its official source. This gives the security product a complete installer and matching application files to inspect.

Fix 5: Resolve a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
A 64-bit Windows installation can run both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. That does not mean their DLLs are interchangeable.
Do not replace ASZSHLEXT64.DLL with ASZSHLEXT.DLL, or copy a DLL from another Ashampoo product. A 32-bit shell extension cannot substitute for a 64-bit one, and files from another release may require different dependencies or registry entries.
Check the application architecture by:
- Opening Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Checking the product name and installed version information.
- Opening the product’s installation folder.
- Looking for the matching executable and shell-extension files.
The reliable correction is to uninstall and reinstall the product edition that matches the application and Windows environment. Do not build a mixed installation by copying files between Program Files and Program Files (x86).
Fix 6: Do not copy the DLL or register it blindly
Downloading aszshlext64.dll from a random DLL website is risky. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong Ashampoo release, use the wrong architecture, lack dependencies, or leave the original Explorer registration problem unresolved.

This is an application shell extension, not a Windows component. It belongs beside the Ashampoo program files.
regsvr32 is also not a universal missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified requirement to manually register this file. Reinstalling Ashampoo ZIP is safer because its installer can register the extension and install related files together.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when other programs are affected
Use Windows repair tools when several unrelated applications fail, Windows features are unstable, or there is broader evidence of system corruption. They are not the normal way to restore a third-party Ashampoo DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither normally recreates an Ashampoo application file.

Fix 8: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to a driver problem
aszshlext64.dll is not a device driver, so updating graphics, storage, chipset, or printer drivers is not a normal fix for this error. Consider drivers only if File Explorer is also crashing, devices are failing, or several applications show hardware-related faults.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the broader symptom.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.

If Ashampoo ZIP and Explorer worked recently and the error began after an update, cleanup utility, or other system change, System Restore may help.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Choose Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
System Restore can remove recent application or system changes, but it does not replace a proper Ashampoo reinstall when the program files are damaged.

“Specified module could not be found” may identify a missing dependency rather than the DLL itself. A file described as “not designed to run on Windows” may be corrupted, incompatible with the installed application build, or replaced with a file from another release.
If several unrelated DLLs fail, investigate Windows corruption, disk health, malware, or a failed update. If only Ashampoo ZIP or File Explorer reports this filename, focus on the Ashampoo installation and its shell-extension registration.

Is aszshlext64.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs with Ashampoo ZIP software and is not a standard Windows file in System32 or SysWOW64.
