If atiu9p64.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the AMD Radeon graphics-driver package rather than downloading a replacement DLL. atiu9p64.dll is a legitimate 64-bit AMD graphics-driver component commonly installed with Radeon software.
The safest fix is to identify the installed GPU, remove the damaged AMD driver when necessary, and install the correct complete package. Laptop users should normally start with the computer manufacturer’s graphics driver because switchable graphics depend on OEM-specific configuration.
What atiu9p64.dll is
atiu9p64.dll belongs to an AMD/ATI Radeon display-driver family. AMD driver inventories place it beside related files such as atiu9pag.dll, atiuxp64.dll, atiumd64.dll, and other graphics components.
The file may appear in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository- An AMD driver package or extracted installation folder
The System32 name does not mean that the file is a built-in Windows component. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is also the normal location for 64-bit third-party driver DLLs. atiu9p64.dll itself is a 64-bit file. Do not copy it into SysWOW64 merely because a 32-bit game reports an error.

Known diagnostic records include 64-bit versions such as 8.14.1.6463 and 25.20.14012.6002. File version, size, and signing information can vary by Radeon generation and driver package, so a matching filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine.
AMD does not publish a detailed public description of this individual DLL. Third-party metadata associates it with PowerXpress user-mode graphics functionality, but the practical conclusion is simpler: it is part of the AMD display-driver installation and should be repaired with that installation.
What the error means
Windows may show a message similar to:
C:WindowsSystem32atiu9p64.dll isn't designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
This wording has been associated with GfxUi.exe - Bad Image. Other diagnostics may report that Windows could not load the image or could not find the file. The exact message depends on which AMD component or application attempted to load it.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A “Bad Image” error usually means that Windows found a file but could not load it correctly. Common reasons include:
- An interrupted AMD driver update
- Files from different driver versions being mixed
- A damaged or incomplete driver installation
- The wrong driver for the GPU or laptop model
- Antivirus quarantine
- Unsupported legacy Radeon hardware
- Windows component corruption affecting the installer
- A counterfeit or modified copy of the DLL
Fix 1: Install the correct AMD or OEM graphics driver
Time needed: About 15–30 minutes, depending on the download and restart.
This is the primary repair because the DLL must match its related AMD files, driver INF, catalog, permissions, and graphics hardware.
Identify the graphics hardware
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the exact AMD GPU name.
- If this is a laptop or all-in-one computer, record the manufacturer and full model number.
- If the adapter is listed as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the AMD driver is not correctly installed.
Download the driver from AMD’s official Drivers and Support page for current supported Radeon products, or from the computer manufacturer’s support page. For laptops with integrated and discrete graphics, prefer the OEM package first.

Install the package
- Close games and graphics applications.
- Run the downloaded AMD installer as administrator.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- If an available Clean Install or Factory Reset option is shown, select it when the existing AMD installation appears damaged.
- Let the installer complete without restarting or shutting down the computer.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again and confirm that the correct AMD adapter is shown without a warning icon.
Test the application that reported the error. If it opens and the display adapter is correctly identified, the driver repair worked.
If the installer fails, the error returns immediately, or several AMD components are missing, continue with the cleanup procedure below rather than copying an individual DLL.
For readers who do not want to hunt through multiple driver versions and compare hardware IDs manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair and driver installation are handled by the full version. It is optional, and the correct AMD or OEM package remains the authoritative source for this file.
Fix 2: Use AMD Cleanup Utility, then reinstall
Time needed: About 20–40 minutes.
Use this method when the driver update was interrupted, the installer repeatedly fails, or the error survives a normal reinstall. AMD Cleanup Utility removes AMD graphics and audio drivers and software, but it does not remove AMD chipset drivers.
- Download the official AMD Cleanup Utility before removing the current driver.
- Save the correct AMD or OEM graphics package locally.
- Close open programs.
- Right-click the Cleanup Utility and choose Run as administrator.
- Accept the prompt to restart into Safe Mode if offered.
- Allow the cleanup to finish.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Run the previously downloaded graphics-driver installer.
- Restart Windows again.
Do not manually delete atiu9p64.dll from System32 or DriverStore. The installer must restore the complete package through Windows’ driver installation system.

- Boost Clock: Up to 2655 MHz
After the second restart:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Confirm the AMD model is present.
- Open Properties and check the Device status message.
- Launch the affected application.
If the machine is a laptop with two GPUs, install the OEM graphics packages in the manufacturer’s recommended order. Mixing a generic AMD package with an OEM-integrated graphics package can cause switchable-graphics failures.
Fix 3: Use the final driver for legacy Radeon hardware
Time needed: About 20–45 minutes.
Older Radeon products may no longer be supported by current AMD releases. Installing the newest package can leave legacy hardware with an incomplete or incompatible driver.
- Identify the exact GPU in Device Manager.
- Search the AMD support area for that model’s legacy driver.
- Check whether AMD identifies the product as legacy.
- Download the final driver available for that GPU and your Windows version.
- If a newer AMD package is already installed, use AMD Cleanup Utility first.
- Install the legacy package.
- Restart Windows and check Device Manager.
AMD has published legacy Radeon packages, including legacy Adrenalin releases with their own driver versions. Do not force a current driver onto unsupported hardware simply because the installer offers it.
If the computer manufacturer provides a driver for the older GPU, use that package instead, particularly on laptops.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: About 5–15 minutes.
If the error began immediately after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined the DLL or another related AMD file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Inspect recent detections.
- Check the original path, detection name, publisher information, and file signature.
- Compare the location with the AMD driver installation.
Restore or allow the file only when it came from a verified AMD or OEM driver package and the detection is clearly a false positive. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file places it back on the device and may cause Defender to detect it again.
If the file came from an unofficial DLL download site, do not restore it. Reinstall the complete driver package from AMD or the computer manufacturer and run a full security scan. Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to suppress the error.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: About 15–30 minutes, sometimes longer.
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They are not the normal source for replacing a third-party AMD driver DLL, but they can help when Windows servicing is damaged and AMD’s installer cannot complete.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the AMD driver installer again.
Run DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the application. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, do not treat that as proof that it restored atiu9p64.dll; repeat the AMD driver repair instead.
When manually repeating DISM and SFC is difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing reported system problems; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and DISM, SFC, and a complete AMD driver reinstall remain the direct Windows and vendor-supported path.
Fix 6: Roll back a recent driver or Windows change
Time needed: About 10–30 minutes.
If atiu9p64.dll worked until a recent driver or Windows update:
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the AMD adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart Windows.
You can also use System Restore:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the graphics-driver problem.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back drivers, system files, settings, and installed programs without intentionally deleting personal files. If there is no restore point, return to the AMD Cleanup Utility and correct-package reinstall.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the COM self-registration entry point DllRegisterServer. AMD display-driver binaries are installed as part of a driver package and are not generally registered as ordinary COM libraries.

Running:
regsvr32 atiu9p64.dll
is unlikely to repair the graphics driver and may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder and then attempt registration.
The same warning applies to manually copying a DLL from DriverStore. Windows must install the correct package, catalog, permissions, and related files together.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If only one game or application still fails
If Device Manager shows the correct AMD adapter and other applications work:
- Use the game launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command.
- Restart the computer.
- Check whether the application is loading an old DLL from its own folder.
- Reinstall the affected application if its files are damaged.
- Check the application’s own support requirements.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may need a separate 32-bit dependency, but that does not make atiu9p64.dll a 32-bit file. Do not place this 64-bit driver DLL in SysWOW64.
How to check whether the file is genuine
The filename alone cannot establish authenticity. Inspect the file that Windows is trying to load:
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures if the tab is present.
- Check that the signer is associated with Advanced Micro Devices.
- Open Details and record the file version.
- Record the complete path.
- Compare the path with the AMD DriverStore or System32 locations created by the official driver installer.
A copy in an unrelated temporary folder, application folder, or user-download directory deserves additional scrutiny. Run Microsoft Defender or your installed security product before restoring or replacing it.

FAQ
Is atiu9p64.dll malware?
Not normally. It is a real AMD graphics-driver filename, but a filename does not prove that every copy is safe. Check its path, digital signature, and package origin.
Is it part of Windows?
No. It is an AMD graphics-driver component that may be installed under Windows system and DriverStore locations.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is atiu9p64.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
It is a 64-bit driver DLL. Do not copy it to SysWOW64 to satisfy a 32-bit application.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Standalone DLL sites can provide malware, an incorrect architecture, or a version that does not match the other AMD files. Install the complete AMD or OEM graphics-driver package.
Will SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. Use the AMD driver installer as the normal source for this third-party DLL.
What if the error names atiu9pag.dll instead?
Treat it as the same AMD driver-family problem. Reinstall the complete graphics package rather than replacing only the named file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat does success look like?
Device Manager should show the correct AMD adapter without a warning icon, AMD software should open normally, and the application that reported the error should launch without the DLL message.
